In a show of prototypes, a pod of unmanned sailboats from around the world competes to cross “The Atlantic” test tank in Horten, Norway. Cross the real ocean, and the Sail Bots race similarly challenges scholarly robotic-vessel designers to North America for a bit of station-keeping, collision-avoidance and “cargo moves”. For all, the future seems bright — the first commercial runs of unmanned vessels are underway or scheduled worldwide. These earliest movers have the support of governments, Google and grateful clients.

Rolls-Royce, Google Cloud Sign Landmark Deal

The maritime industry's exhaustive push toward autonomy just received a boost in the form of a deal signed between Rolls-Royce and Google to develop further its intelligent awareness systems. The agreement was signed at the Google Cloud Summit in Sweden, and it allows Rolls-Royce to use Google’s Cloud Machine Learning Engine to further train the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) based object classification system for detecting, identifying and tracking the objects a vessel can encounter at sea.

World's First Fabrication of Subsea Well Part Using LiDAR Data and 3D Printing

Fugro and 3D at Depth, a global provider of advanced subsea LiDAR systems and solutions, announce the world's first application of subsea LiDAR data used to 3D Print an accurate 1:1 physical model of a damaged well part. The ability to use accurate spatial data in subsea part fabrication with 3D printing, introduces a wide range of possibilities to reduce costs across intervention planning and Life of Field programs. The subsea part fabrication was part of a larger project conducted in early 2016, using 3D at Depth's subsea LiDAR SL 2 technology and point cloud software. 3D at Depth was contracted by Fugro to perform subsea laser scanning services on a well abandonment project in Oceania, Australia.

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC), a global shipping company based in the Middle East, has implemented Shiptech, an end-to-end fuel management system developed by global cloud software company Inatech. Shiptech provides the company with an automated, cloud-based, fuel management system that transforms the way UASC buys bunker fuel. Using Shiptech’s procurement, contract management and advanced reporting applications, UASC plans fleet level bunkering for its vessels, tracks vessel performance and improves negotiations with suppliers.
