In the late 1990s, new tech and software advances were creating scenario programs that moved a student closer and closer to the realities demanded by, well, reality. “The future is here, and we are ready to simulate it,” Burkley concluded.Burkley is now executive director at the Maritime Pilots Institute in Covington, La.

The U.S. Coast Guard held a commissioning ceremony for the Coast Guard Cutter Edgar Culbertson, the service's 37th fast response cutter, at Sector Field Office Galveston, Texas, Friday.The new 154-foot Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutter (FRC) was built by Bollinger Shipyards and delivered in February.Built to replace the service's 110-foot patrol boats, FRCs have a flank speed of 28 knots, state of the art command, control, communications and computer technology, and a stern launch system for the vessel’s 26-foot cutter boat.

SDC 7 to Finalize Ship Stability Criteria

International Maritime Organization (IMO) 's Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC 7), meeting at IMO Headquarters (3-7 February), is expected to finalize a comprehensive set of interim guidelines on second generation intact stability criteria, including guidelines on vulnerability criteria, direct stability failure assessment and operational measures.According to the UN body the aim is to produce a set of guidelines for trial use. The session will also further develop associated explanatory notes.The Sub-Committee is also set to finalize draft amendments to the Revised Explanatory Notes to SOLAS chapter II-1 subdivision and damage stability regulations.For a ship to be considered seaworthy and safe it must be designed to remain stable and afloat in all conditions…

Mariner Training in Brazil: Inside the Institute of Nautical Sciences

For a long time there has been a deficit of trained maritime officers in Brazil, as for decades the only accredited training institutes were run by the Brazilian Navy, where a very limited number of prospective maritime deck and engine officers could be trained at its two training institutes in the country. That's all changing now with the Institute of Nautical Sciences (ICN) leading the way.With the discovery of the pre-salt in 2007 and the continued growth of the maritime and offshore sectors, the lack of qualified Brazilian officers became acute. For many years, and even today, most offshore captains and officers are foreigners, while there is a more significant number of local captains and officers in the merchant fleet.

Bollinger Shipyards has delivered the 29th Fast Response Cutter (FRC), USCGC Forrest Rednour, to the U.S. Coast Guard, Thursday in Key West, Fla.“The vessel’s commissioning is scheduled for November, 2018 in southern California. The vessel’s commissioning is slated for April, 2018 in Atlantic Beach, N.C. The 154-foot patrol craft USCGC Richard Snyder is the 27th vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program, and the first be stationed in Atlantic Beach. JLT Mobile Computers Selected by DCT Gdansk

JLT Mobile Computers has delivered 47 of its JLT VERSO+ 10 rugged mobile vehicle computers with the most compact form factor in its class to the new T2 deep-water terminal at DCT Gdansk in Poland. Located in the heart of the Baltic, DCT Gdansk is Poland’s largest container facility, and the only deep-water terminal in the Baltic Sea region. The rugged mobile vehicle computers, supplied by IT systems engineering company and JLT partner Autepra, have been installed on Kalmar T2 terminal tractors. Running industry leading Navis N4 Terminal Operating System (TOS) software, they form part of a larger development program undertaken by DCT to open a second 650 m long, deep-water berth at the T2 terminal, which will double the handling capacity of DCT Gdansk to 3M TEU per year.
