Developments in marine power today are centered on ever tightening legislative mandate which increasingly aim to dramatically reduce and eventually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions to the environment. Chevron Lubricant Receives Approval from WinGD

Chevron Marine Lubricants received a No Objection Letter (NOL) from Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) for the use of its Taro Special HT 100 cylinder lubrication oil in a number of the manufacturer’s engines when operating on a wide variety of fuels from 0.0% to 3.5% sulphur, including fuels compliant with emissions control area (ECA) regulations with a maximum content of 0.10% sulphur, eliminating the need to change cylinder lubricants when operating in and out of ECAs. This follows 2,000 hours of validation testing on-board a Panamax containership fitted with a Wärtsilä 8RT-flex82T engine. The NOL applies to the use of Taro Special HT 100 in WinGD X…

Matson Monitors Cylinder Liner Wear

The cylinder liner is a crucial part of a ship’s engine, as monitoring wear not only extends operational life but also prevents unexpected and costly repairs, with the average cost for a replacement liner at over $150,000. Matson has installed Parker Kittiwake’s LinerSCAN onto several of its vessels as part of a range of condition monitoring tools. Payback proved immediate, as on the first voyage after installation, the LinerSCAN system indicated increased wear on the cylinder liners.

Lukoil: Cylinder Oil to Reduce Wear, Consumption

Lukoil Marine Lubricants reports that it has expanded its sales in the 2012 business year by 74% to around $200m. Established in 2008, the subsidiary of Russian oil group Lukoil continues to grow rapidly. As for operative and technical expertise, since entering into the global lubricating oil business Lukoil has relied on its Hamburg site. “Here we are in close proximity to our customers, because Germany, and Hamburg in particular, remains one of the world’s most important shipping hubs. The combination of Russian raw materials, worldwide leading additive technology and German engineering has become a success factor for us.” To round off the connection to Hamburg, shipping line Hapag-Lloyd’s Hamburg Express also uses Lukoil products for lubrication.

MHI Renew Hyundai's Low-speed Diesel Engine Contract

Through this licensing arrangement MHI seeks to further accelerate penetration of the Mitsubishi-UE engines in Korea, which has a near 35% share in the world's shipbuilding market, and other countries; it also aims to enhance its collaborative relationship with HHI, looking to boost the low-speed marine diesel engines' share in the global market. Specifically the new agreement grants licensing privileges to HHI to manufacture, sell and service Mitsubishi-UE LSE and LSE-Eco series engines with cylinder bores of between 350 to 800 millimeters (mm).

MHI Licenses 3rd Chinese Company

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Zhejiang Yungpu Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd. (YUNGPU) in China's Zhejiang Province agreed last December on licensing of the technology incorporated into the Mitsubishi-UE, MHI's low-speed marine diesel engines. The licensing became effective late last month. YUNGPU is the third Chinese company to be licensed Mitsubishi-UE engine technology. YUNGPU plans to complete manufacture and delivery of the first unit by the end of this year. The engines licensed to YUNGPU are the UEC37LSII and UEC33LSII, small-size marine diesels with cylinder bores of 370 and 330 millimeters (mm), respectively. Under the licensing agreement YUNGPU can manufacture, sell and provide after-sale services for engines in China.
