NGOs Again Urge EU to Stop Unweaned Calf Transport by Sea
A joint letter has been sent to EU Animal Welfare Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi urging the Commission to halt the transport of unweaned calves from Ireland to France by roro ferry.It follows a similar letter sent in February.In 2022 the European Commission conducted an audit into the export of unweaned calves from Ireland to France and concluded that these journeys breach Regulation EC1/2005 on the protection of animals during long distance transport, because the feeding requirements were not being met.Unweaned calves should be fed after nine hours if necessary or after a maximum of 19 hours.

Denmark Bans Discharge of Scrubber Water
The discharge of scrubber water from ships out to 22km (12 nautical miles) from the Danish coasts will be prohibited by law. The ban will come into effect on July 1, 2025, for ships with scrubbers in open operation, where the wash water is discharged into the sea. For ships with scrubbers in closed operation, the ban on water discharge will take effect on July 1, 2029.The Ministry of Environment has stated that scrubber water has contributed to excessive levels of a number of heavy metals and tar substances such as lead, cadmium, anthracene and benz(a)pyrene in the marine environment.

Danish Base for German Offshore Wind Farm Service Workers
EnBW Baltic 2 one of Germany’s largest offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea will soon be serviced from the Danish port of Klintholm on the island of Møn, EnBW said Tuesday. The company has so far had its service team of up to 25 people travel from Rostock to a hotel vessel close to the EnBW Baltic 2 offshore wind farm. A hotel and a service building are now being constructed in Klintholm [Denmark], from where the EnBW workers will be ferried to the wind farm in the mornings and evenings during their two-week duty roster.
Copenhagen Ferry Service Extended
Arriva Danmark has extended the requirements of its contract with Damen Shipyards Group in order to account for longer ferry routes in the city of Copenhagen. Arriva originally contracted Damen to deliver five fully-electric Damen Ferry 2306 E3 vessels to cover passenger routes in the central metropolitan area of Copenhagen. Damen Shipyards Group recently signed a contract with leading multinational public transport company Arriva Danmark for five fully-electric ferries, known as the Damen Ferry 2306 E3. Strengthening Danish-Brazilian Cooperation
Brazil continues to be an important area for Danish shipping interests and, with the signing of a new agreement on cooperation with the Brazilian authority ANTAQ under the Brazilian Ministry of Transport, relations are being strengthened. The agreement was signed by Director General Andreas Nordseth of the Danish Maritime Authority and Director Mario Povia of the Brazilian National Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ) in Brasilia at a shipping policy seminar held between ANTAQ, the Danish Embassy and the Danish Maritime Authority. The agreement strengthens the already good maritime cooperation between Denmark and Brazil. The agreement sets the framework for, inter alia, the exchange of experts and a shipping policy dialogue between the countries.
EU Backs Green Ferries Conversion
The EU's TEN-T Program will provide more than €2 million to back the upgrade of two ferries navigating in the Baltic Sea to the mixed use of electricity and fuel. The new hybrid propulsion system will help to reduce the environmental impact of ships, as well as secure the operability and stability of the vessels. The new EU regulation requires all vessels travelling in European waters to cut down the emission of sulphur oxide (SO) from 2015 onwards to decrease environmental pollution.
Scandlines’ Hybrid Ferry Fleet is World’s Largest
Corvus Energy and Scandlines announced today the completion of the commissioning for the Scandlines’ fleet of hybrid ferries: the M/V Deutschland, M/V Schleswig-Holstein and M/V Prins Richard. According to the companies, the vessels represent the largest fleet of hybrid ferries in operation today. Based on the success of Scandline’s first hybrid conversion, the MF Prinsesse Benedikte, the latest three vessels each use a 2.7MWh Energy Storage System (ESS) consisting of 399 Corvus Energy AT6500 advanced lithium polymer batteries integrated with Siemens drive systems.

Denmark's Port of Aalborg Invests for New Growth
The Port's Board of Directors has approved an investment budget of 500 million kroner (about US$ 90,735,000) for the Port of Aalborg Group in the period 2014-2016. An analysis prepared by the City of Aalborg Business Office and Business Network 9220 shows that companies in Aalborg East generally made it through the crisis, and that many of them are planning further growth already . Cargotec Acquires Danish Company Assets
Cargotec has agreed to acquire assets of a Danish sales and service company Arne Holst & Co. A/S. The company is situated in Kvistgaard, North of Copenhagen in Denmark. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the financial terms. The acquisition includes the takeover of business assets and customer contacts, including four employees. The Managing Director of Arne Holst & Co. will continue as a consultant for a transition period. The assets of Arne Holst & Co. A/S. will be integrated to Cargotec’s subsidiary Kalmar Danmark A/S. A&P Group Reports Positive Outlook
"Ship repair in the U.K. is looking positive for 2003" say the A&P Group, who has confirmed that all 14 of their dry docks are full with various vessels under repair, refit and conversion. A&P Tyne is currently hosting a number of ships including Stirling Shipmanagement's 2,270dwt offshore supply vessel Putford Enterprise, the 2,067dwt offshore supply vessel Pacific Banner owned by Swire Pacific Offshore, Boyd Line's 1,621grt Arctic Warrior and P&O Ferries' 20,446grt PO Kent. Across the river at A&P Tyne's Hebburn facility is Technip Offshore's 9,158grt diving support vessel CSO Wellservicer, which is due to leave the dry dock on January 12 .
Wärtsilä's Environmental Report Recognized
Wärtsilä Group's first Environmental Report was ranked the best separate environmental report in 2001 alongside M-Real's report in a competition held in Finland annually to judge the environmental and social responsibility reporting of Finnish companies. The Wärtsilä report is the first report to be published by a Finnish mechanical engineering company. It has been prepared with highly ambitious objectives, adopting the model of the Global Reporting Initiative. The report describes the company's products and their environmental impact. The whole reporting competition, comprising the report, Internet pages and annual report, was won this year by the wholesale and retail chain Kesko Oyj. Wärtsilä Group published its first Environmental Report in June 2001.
Construction Begins on Shipbuilding and Repair Factories
The Pha Rung Shipbuilding Industrial Company, a member of the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industrial Economic Group (VINASHIN), on January 27 launched the construction of three shipbuilding and repair factories which are considered to be the biggest in Vietnam so far. These include the Yen Hung Shipbuilding Factory, the Sea Ship Repairing Factory in Yen Hung Supporting Industry Complex and the Pha Rung VINASHIN-MAN Engine Manufacturing Factory. Total cost for construction of the three factories is put at VND 4.5 trillion. According to Mr Nguyen Van Hoc, General Director of the Pha Rung Shipbuilding Industrial Company, with the construction of the Pha Rung VINASHIN-MAN Engine Manufacturing Factory, Vietnam will become the fourth country in the world to manufacture sea ship engines.
