India's Directive on Container Weight Verification Next Week

Directorate General of Shipping will issue guidelines for the Safety of Life at Sea Convention  (SOLAS)  convention on container weight verification next week, said Deepak Shetty, Director General of Shipping, Government of India yesterday in Mumbai. “By July 1, 2016, we have to put the regulation in place and the file has come to our table and the circular will be issued by Monday or Tuesday. We will be one of the first few countries on a task as daunting as this,” Shetty said delivering his key note address at a conference on `Ease of doing business’ organised by Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Ship Agents Association. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has amended SOLAS that seeks verification of container weight and holds the shipper responsible for it effective July 1, 2016.

Blacklisted Oil Tanker Returning to Libya

An Indian-flagged oil tanker is returning to Libya, the North African country's rival oil corporation said on Thursday, after its failed first attempt to export crude oil led to the ship being blacklisted by the United Nations Security Council. The Distya Ameya tanker is heading to the western Libyan port of Zawiya, said Nagi al-Maghrabi, chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC) set up by Libya's rival eastern government in parallel to the Tripoli-based NOC. The Tripoli NOC is recognized internationally as the legitimate seller of Libyan oil. The Tripoli NOC and its international backers say that if the eastern government succeeds in its long-held aim of selling oil independently…

India Instructs Disputed Tanker to Await UN Orders

India has instructed an Indian-flagged oil tanker that has been blacklisted by the U.N. not to discharge its cargo of crude oil from Libya's rival eastern government and to await instructions from the United Nations, a senior Indian government official said on Thursday. The tanker, the Distya Ameya, is carrying 650,000 barrels of crude on behalf of a second National Oil Corporation (NOC) set up by Libya's rival eastern government in parallel to the Tripoli-based NOC, which is recognized internationally as the legitimate seller of Libyan oil. The 4th Edition of Oil Spill India (OSI) 2016 is all set to be launched at the JW Marriot Sahar, Mumbai. “Safe Container – Steering Changes” – SOLAS Amendment

With the SOLAS Convention now requiring container weight verification from 1st July 2016 onwards following the amendment approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) last November, the Company of Master Mariners of India (CMMI) jointly with the Indian Maritime Administration conducted a Conference on “Safe Containers Steering Changes” on 10th December at The Lalit, Mumbai. The objective of the conference being to bring together various stakeholders in the container supply chain and provide an opportunity for an in-depth understanding of the different issues and their implications. Deepak Shetty, the Director General of Shipping and Additional Secretary, Government of India, stated that the Indian Maritime Administration was totally prepared to implement the new requirement.

INMEX SMM India Finds its Footing

The impressive response to the INMEX SMM India 2015 that was officially opened yesterday by Deepak Shetty, Director General of Shipping, Government of India, seems to be a clear indication that the green shoots of economic recovery are finally making their appearance in the country. For some time now there has hardly been any event including conferences and exhibitions that succeeded to break even. But the three-day INMEX SMM India now underway (23rd to 25th September 2015) at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, will certainly be something for most participants to write home about. The turnout of visitors at the opening day was more than expected as lot of interest has been generated in anticipation of new technologies set to make their debut.

PSC Inspection Workshop by IRS

IRClass (Indian Register of Shipping) has conducted an executive workshop, in coordination with India’s Directorate General of Shipping and the Indian National Shipowners’ Association (INSA), on Port State Control (PSC) inspections. The workshop, inaugurated by the Director General of Shipping, Mr. Deepak Shetty, saw presentations highlighting reasons which can be attributed to PSC detentions, analysing root causes, and suggesting preventative actions. The responsibilities of ship staff/ship owners/managers, classification societies and Flag were deliberated, plus vital steps to be taken prior to vessels entering ports. 2nd WISTA India Forum Receives Strong Support

On 23rd January 2015, the Royal Mumbai Yacht Club saw around a hundred dignified members of the shipping fraternity gather for the second WISTA Annual Forum, an event that lived up to the industry’s expectations. The select crowd included long-term supporters of WISTA India and WISTA members, as well as members who flew down from Delhi, Chennai, Cochin and Bengaluru especially for this conference. Shipping Tribune Conclave Saw Strong Industry Participation

“The Shipping Tribune Conclave 2014” held yesterday at Holiday Inn, Mumbai saw a significantly large participation of stalwarts and operators of the Shipping Industry. Issues which affecting the employment and employability of Indian Seafarers came into focus. Mr. S. Hajara, one of the wll-known names in the shipping industry while delivering the keynote address highlighted the contribution and achievements of Indian seafarers. Capt. Vinay Singh emphasized the need for more quality officers for seniors ranks while also highlighting that the time taken to pass the competency examinations by our officers and engineers at junior level is far more  as compared to officers appearing for examination overseas.

Deepak Shetty, Jt DG Shipping, addresses WISTA India at AGM

WISTA India conducted its second AGM on the 19th of September 2014, at the conference hall of the Narottam Morarjee Institute in Mumbai. The AGM was attended by 23 members of WISTA, and was presided over by WISTA India President, Ms Sanjam Sahi Gupta and the members of the Executive Committee. The AGM was followed by an open discussion session, where the Joint DG of Shipping, Mr Deepak Shetty, was invited to talk to the members and prospective members of the association. The discussions were centred around the realities in the maritime sector and the proposals for increasing women participation in the industry.
