US Container Freight is Shrinking

Container freight volumes at the largest U.S. ports were down 3.8% in September compared with the same month a year earlier, confirming the slackening of merchandise trade and downturn in the business cycle.The ports of New York-New Jersey, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Savannah, Houston, Norfolk, Charleston, Seattle and Oakland account for the overwhelming majority of container ocean freight into and out of the United States.The total volume of loaded containers handled by these nine ports amounted to 2.67 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in September 2022…

Gulf Coast Fuel Supply & FUELTRAX Partner

Gulf Coast Fuel Supply, an offshore fuel supplier specializing in MGO and VLSFO deliveries at the Galveston Lightering area, has partnered with FUELTRAX to install its fuel monitoring solution on the chemical tanker Bonaire Trader. Bonaire Trader was built in 2007 and has previously operated at South African ports. She now serves customers in the Galveston area near Houston, Texas. The vessel's carrying capacity is 11255 t DWT, and her current draught is reported to be 5.6 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 116.5 meters, and her width is 20 meters.

Greece to Quarantine all Arrivals from Abroad

Greece announced on Monday it will shut all shops apart from supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, petrol stations and food delivery services, and put anyone arriving from abroad into quarantine for two weeks, to fight the coronavirus.Greece had already cancelled mass gatherings and closed bars, restaurants, playgrounds and gyms. So far the country has reported 331 confirmed cases of infections and four fatalities. Crowley Orders New ATB for Enhanced AK Service

Imabari Shipbuilding Delivers Two Container Ships to Yang Ming

Two new 14,000 TEU full-container vessels built for Taiwanese ocean shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation  by Imabari Shipbuilding  Japan, were named as YM Wonderland and YM Wisdom respectively.Yang Ming Chairman Bronson Hsieh, and National Ocean Taiwan University President Chang Ching Fong, were invited to the naming ceremony. DP World Sokhna Welcomes Largest Bulker to Enter the Red Sea

DP World Sokhna recently welcomed the largest bulk cargo vessel to ever arrive to the port and enter the Red Sea, said a press release from the company. Known as a capesize vessel, the M/v Seafarer originally came from Malta carrying steel cargo weighing more than 140,000 MT. Prior to its arrival, DP World Sokhna conducted a bathymetric survey of the port’s topography to ensure its depth relative to sea level was adequate to receive vessels of this size. Yang Ming Back to Profitability in 2017

Taiwanese ocean shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation said that its  consolidated revenues of 2017 totaled NTD 131.08 billion (USD 4.4 billion), up 13.59% compared with NTD 115.4 billion (USD 3.88 billion) in revenue from previous year. The company’s net profit, after tax, was NTD 0.32 billion (USD 10.78 million), EPS NTD 0.17. Volumes in 2017 also increased to 4,722 thousand TEUs, up 9 % year over year. Moving into the black, Yang Ming’s annual revenue and profit for 2017 saw significant improvement. Coupled with a recovering shipping market, the effort and dedication from team members worldwide helped Yang Ming’s move in the right direction and take the first step to success.

Yang Ming Marine Offers Korea-Vietnam-Thailand Service

Taiwan-based ocean shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation announcesdthat it will provide Korea-Vietnam/Thailand service (KVX) as of March 7th, 2018. The calling port rotation of KVX service is: Incheon–Ulsan–Busan–Shekou–Ho Chi Minh–Laem Chabang–Bangkok–Laem Chabang–Ho Chi Minh–Incheon. With the new KVX service and the existing CT2 service, YM will provide customers with more convenient and reliable services between Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Two months ago, Yang Ming announced a new Asia Subcontinent Express service (Loop Code: AS1), which extends Yang Ming’s coverage of direct service to the trade between North China and Pakistan.

Fiat Chrysler Sues Shippers over Alleged Price Fixing

The automaker wants the Federal Maritime Commission to order payments from Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics AS and its sister company EUKOR Car Carriers Inc, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd, Compania Sud Americana de Vapores, Hoegh Autoliners AS and affiliated companies. Fiat Chrysler filed its complaint on Oct. 17. All but one of the shippers sued by Fiat Chrysler pleaded guilty and admitted to price fixing as part of a Justice Department investigation. The remaining firm, Hoegh, agreed last month to plead guilty and pay a $21 million criminal fine.

Boxship Firms Sign up with Alibaba

Two container shipping lines, France's CMA CGM and Israel's Zim, have signed up with Alibaba to allow customers to book space on their vessels through the Chinese e-commerce giant, in a bid to boost sales as the sector battles a severe downturn. Container lines, facing their worst ever downturn due to a glut of ships and weaker demand, are pursuing several measures such as vessel-sharing arrangements or mergers and acquisitions to ride out the current slump. A growing number of logistics firms are going online to buoy their business. In December, Maersk - the world's largest container shipping line and a unit of Denmark's A.P. Moller-Maersk - started offering online booking services to Chinese shippers on Alibaba's OneTouch website.

Maersk, Alibaba Team up to offer Online Booking

Maersk, the world's largest container shipping line, has teamed up with Alibaba to allow customers to reserve space on its vessels through the Chinese company, illustrating growing cooperation between e-commerce and logistics firms. Maersk, a unit of Denmark's A.P. Moller-Maersk, began offering the service to Chinese shippers on Alibaba's OneTouch booking website on Dec. 22, a spokeswoman for the shipping line said on Wednesday. Shippers traditionally go through freight forwarders to book space for goods on container vessels, but lines such as Maersk are allowing cargo owners to book directly via the internet. For their part, e-commerce companies are increasingly venturing into logistics activities to try to gain better control over their supply chain networks.

ExxonMobil Expands Mass Flow Metering System in Hong Kong

ExxonMobil introduced its second independently accredited mass flow metering system (MFMS) in Hong Kong onboard the bunker vessel, Anelly. It follows the introduction of the first independently accredited MFMS in Hong Kong fitted on the barge, Anshing. The expansion will help to meet increased customer demand for fuel deliveries via an accredited MFMS, due to the cost and efficiency benefits. One Small Step toward Sustainable Coastal Shipping

Short sea shipping is alive and well on America’s East Coast. In the United States, counties and states directly on the shoreline constitute less than 10 percent of the total land area (not including Alaska), but account for 39 percent of the total population. From 1970 to 2010, the population of these counties increased by almost 40 percent and are projected to increase by an additional 10 million people or 8 percent by 2020. Coastal areas are substantially more crowded than the U.S. as a whole, and population density in coastal areas will continue to increase in the future.

CaroTrans Adds Direct Montreal-Le Havre Service

Global non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC) and ocean freight consolidator CaroTrans today announced a new weekly less than container load (LCL) service from Montreal to Le Havre, France. This direct service has a 14 day transit. Freight can originate from as far west as Vancouver with handling provided by multiple container freight stations throughout Canada. The region in and around Montreal, the Quebec province, is a French speaking region with close, historical ties to France, and in turn robust trade, CaroTrans explained. Freight management at origin and destination is supported by a team including Odyssey, a CaroTrans partner in Canada, and CaroTrans’ Le Havre office. CaroTrans in Le Havre is positioned to expedite cargo release and on-carriage services.

Seaspan Agreement with GCII & Blue Water

Seaspan Corporation announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Greater China Intermodal Investments LLC and Blue Water Commerce, LLC to extend the term of their Right of First Refusal Agreement by one year to March 31, 2016. GCI is Seaspan's investment partnership established with an affiliate of global asset manager The Carlyle Group and others, including affiliates of Seaspan's director Graham Porter and of its largest shareholder, Dennis R. Washington. Under the ROFR Agreement and subject to its terms, Seaspan has a right of first refusal in respect of containership investment opportunities identified by GCI, as well as a right of first offer in respect of certain proposed containership sales by GCI.
