Eco-friendly Power for Container Ships in Hamburg Port

Port of Hamburg is taking a further step toward improving air quality at its port. Innovative technology developed right here in the city is set to enable large and very large container ships to switch off their auxiliary diesel supplies during lay time and instead draw the power they need for on-board operations from a new kind of mobile generator.Becker Marine Systems, Hapag-Lloyd AG and Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) have been testing the new technology as part of a joint pilot project since the start of the year. Technology supplier Becker Marine Systems developed the mobile power generator, then partnered with Hapag-Lloyd and HHLA for the test phase.

For over one year the HUMMEL has been contributing to improved air quality at the port of Hamburg. Becker Marine, Kotug Sign MOU for LNG Hybrid Barge

Press release - Becker Marine Systems and KOTUG signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch a LNG Hybrid Barge in the Port of Rotterdam with effect from June 2017. The LNG Hybrid Barge, a floating energy plant, is designed to provide environmentally friendly power for ships in ports. The LNG Hybrid Barge will deliver clean energy to moored cruise ships and contributes to a cleaner environment. It is an alternative for producing electricity in the traditional way by either their generator sets or their main engines.

Becker Marine Delivers Rudder for Largest Containership

At 19,000 TEU, the largest container ship in the world is now picking up speed – with a high-performance rudder from the Hamburg-based company. The christening of the CSCL GLOBE containership from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) at the end of November drew a great deal of attention in the shipping industry, because, with space for 19,000 standard containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit or TEU), it is the largest one in the world. The rudder for the ship built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in South Korea was delivered by Becker Marine Systems.

In the coming year, the HUMMEL (bumblebee) LNG Hybrid Barge will enable Becker Marine Systems to supply low-emission power to cruise ships lying at port in Hamburg. The first container with liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel has now arrived in the Hanseatic City. Becker Mewis Duct Claims Massive CO2 Reduction

Golden Becker Mewis Duct at SMM 2014 claims its top-selling product has already cut CO2 by 900,000 tonnes to date. A golden Becker Mewis Duct with a large '750“ in the middle will be one of SMM 2014’s “head-turners” says the manufacturer. “This is how we are celebrating the 750th unit of our top-selling product,” said Dirk Lehmann, Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems. More than 800 units of the highly efficient nozzle for reducing energy consumption have now been sold. According to Lehmann, “All of the nozzles delivered thus far have already been able to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 900,000 tonnes.“ The million tonne CO2 mark is projected to be exceeded this year.

On January 8, 2002, Willi Becker Ingenieurbüro changed its name to Becker Marine Systems. The company decided to alter its name to reflect its shift towards an increasingly global position as a system provider for rudders and steering gear which development had been going for some years. While the name of the company has been changed, the very substance of the company will remain the same. That is true in particular with regard to the sophisticated technology and the experience which the qualified team of engineers and technicians have acquired throughout the years.
