Simrad ECDIS Earns South Korean Type Approval

Navico’s list of approvals received from the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute of South Korea has grown following type approval of the latest generation Simrad MARIS ECDIS900 Mk 5 and Mk 15 Electronic Chart Display & Information Systems, joining already approved products such as Simrad Broadband 4G radars, ARGUS antennae, gyrocompasses, autopilots and control and display units. The integrated electronic navigation specialist has secured certificates warranting the new type approvals from KMERI for its IMO type-approved ECDIS navigation systems for use on board merchant vessels.

New Bridge Procedures Guide from ICS

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has published a new edition of the ICS Bridge Procedures Guide, shipping industry guidance on best practice for safe navigation, which is used by seafarers and training institutes worldwide. Maersk to Install Transas ECDIS on 100 Vessels

Maersk Line, the world's largest container company, has selected Transas Marine for ECDIS implementation on more than 100 vessels, Transas announced today. The contract features the Transas Navi-Sailor ECDIS 4000 in dual configuration plus a back-up station on each vessel. According to the agreement signed between Maersk Line and Transas Marine, existing Electronic Chart Display & Information Systems will be upgraded to the latest version of the Transas Navi-Sailor ECDIS Multifunction Display with two ECDIS stations…

Northrop Grumman, Carisbrooke Renew Service Contract

Northrop Grumman Corporation has renewed its service agreement with U.K.-based Carisbrooke Shipping Limited. The contract will cover spares and labor for navigation systems, communication equipment and voyage data recorders onboard the 23 vessels, which include 6,000-, 8,000- and 12,500- Dead Weight Tonnage bulkers. Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine has supplied gyro compasses, autopilots, speed logs, radar and Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) to these vessels. "This contract furthers the relationships between Carisbrooke and Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine," said John Fletcher, global service manager, Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine.

On November 1, 2014, Hatteland Display celebrated its 25th anniversary as a supplier of maritime displays and computers. Coast Survey Improves Access to Wrecks Data

Coast Survey’s wrecks and obstructions database provides info on thousands of wrecks.

Knowing the locations of shipwrecks and other obstructions has always been important for safe navigation ‒ but mariners are not the only people who want to know about wrecks. They are also important for marine archeology, recreational diving, salvage operations, and fishing, among other interests. Now, Coast Survey has improved our Wrecks and Obstructions Database, giving everyone easy access to new records to explore. Historically, Coast Survey has maintained two separate sources of information on wrecks.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been selected by Arklow Shipping to upgrade 12 container vessels with VisionMaster FT Electronic Chart Display & Information Systems (ECDIS). Northrop Grumman's Sperry Marine business unit will install all of the systems by the end of 2014. The VisionMaster FT ECDIS will replace existing NaviECDIS that utilises the Voyage Management System supplied by Sperry Marine. MARIS & Orange Agree to Combine ECDIS Services

MARIS and Orange Business Servicesa sign agreement to facilitate integrated and digital maritime navigation services. Maritime technology specialist MARIS and Orange Business Services have formalized an agreement to deliver Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) and maritime digital services directly to navigators via the world’s largest, fully-managed Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network. Taiwan Training Center ClassNK Certified

Evergreen Seafarer Training Center (ESTC) earns ClassNK certification for its training courses. Classification society ClassNK announced that it has certified the Bridge Resource Management (BRM), Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) and Engine-room Resource Management (ERM) training courses offered by the Evergreen Seafarer Training Center (ESTC). ESTC boasts one of the world’s most sophisticated maritime training centers and has provided training for Taiwanese and foreign seafarers who serve on Evergreen’s fleet of some 100 vessels.

ESTC Earns ClassNK Certification

Leading class society ClassNK announced that it has certified the Bridge Resource Management (BRM), Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) and Engine-room Resource Management (ERM) training courses offered by the Evergreen Seafarer Training Center (ESTC). The new certification confirms that the training programs meet the requirements of ClassNK standards, IMO model course requirements and the STCW Code. The official certificate was presented to Evergreen Marine Corp. (Taiwan) Ltd.

Maris Launches Zero Downtime ECDIS Service

Electronic Navigation specialist Maris has launched ‘Zero downtime ECDIS’, a new product support service devised to ensure that, once mandatory, Electronic Chart Display Information Systems are available at all times. The International Maritime Organization has ruled that mandatory carriage of ECDIS equipment onboard ship will be phased in from July 2012, starting with newly built passenger ships. The move recognises the inherent benefits of ECDIS as a way of improving the safety of navigation, such as its ability to act as a tool for identification and its automatic generation of grounding alerts. USS MOMSEN Crew Trains at MSI Newport

Lt. Jeff Brooks, Training Officer of Pre Commissioning Unit MOMSEN, had the PCU Bridge Watch Standers attend USCG-approved Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) and Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) courses at MarineSafety International's Newport Simulator Training Complex (MSI-Newport) this past August. Those successfully completing the courses will receive certificates that are recognized by the USCG as applicable to merchant marine licenses and STCW 95 endorsements.

Maritime Education On The Upswing

The pressures - political, financial and environmental -to ensure onboard personnel are skillfully trained at operating increasingly complex vessels is tremendous. Simply stated, vessel owners and operators must employ increasingly advanced training courses - both system- and vessel-specific - as well as general courses, in order to avoid costly accidents and litigation. In just the past few years, mariners have proven these courses work, as the amount of oil spilled into the sea has decreased dramatically. According to the USCG, in 1990, tankbarges moved 72 billion gallons of oil, spilling 992,000 gallons, or one-one millionth of a percent.

MARIS Signs Joint Agreement with COSCO/ENS

Maritime Information Systems AS (MARIS) has signed a Joint Development Agreement with COSCO/ENS to produce a range of low cost navigation and marine IT products for the world shipping market. The products, based upon proven MARIS technology, will be sold under both MARIS and COSCO/ENS badge names. China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) a national flag carrier of the People’s Republic of China, was established in Bejing in 1961 taking international shipping as its main line of business. COSCO has been the world’s fastest growing shipping company over the past decades. COSCO own and operate over 600 vessels of different types including container vessels, conventional vessels, timber carriers, refrigerated ships, passenger vessels, bulk carriers and oil tankers.

UTT to Get Kongsberg Simulators

The University of Trinidad and Tobago(UTT) has issued a contract to Kongsberg Maritime for the delivery of a Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator and a Full Mission Engine Room Simulator configured to DNV Class A standards. In addition to the Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator, the delivery will include three secondary interactive tug bridges for certification of Mariners in accordance with competency requirements established by the International Maritime Organization(IMO). These bridges will utilize the latest ARPA Radars, IMO Type Approved Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS), and Automated Identification System (AIS) training.
