Antwerp, Metz Rail Connection Doubles in Frequency

One year after the introduction of the rail shuttle between Antwerp and Metz, the intermodal logistics operator Multi-Modal Rail (MMR) has doubled the frequency. As of the middle of January the Dutch-French company provides a second weekly container shuttle. This increased frequency offers shippers the ideal connection to deepsea services in the port of Antwerp, for their import and export consignments in the Alsace-Lorraine region. The shuttle leaves on Monday and Wednesday from Antwerp Main Hub and arrives the following day at the MMS terminal in Metz.

Indian Minister of State for Shipping, Mansukh Mandaviya inspected the facilities and ongoing projects at Kolkata Port Trust and GR Jetty of Inland Waterways Authority of India. Mandavia visited Netaji Subhas Dock at Kolkata Port Trust where he stressed upon the need for strengthening the Dry Dock facilities. He also inaugurated the renovated Birsa Munda Sarani and Sonapur Road of the Port, and  participated in the tree plantation activities organised by the Port Authorities. He later flagged off the state-of-the–art Seagoing Survey Launch (River Pearl-1) of KoPT.

New Platform for Managing Liquid Terminal Product Movements

Oceaneering International, Inc. announced that its TerminalSmart platform can now be used to manage all liquid terminal product movements across the entire facility from the dock to tanks and pipelines. Proven at the dock where it has been used by major oil and gas companies and liquid storage terminals to significantly improve efficiency during a period of unprecedented growth in vessel transportation traffic, the platform now serves as the hub for all terminal logistics, from facilitating key performance indicators (KPIs) to warning users about scheduling conflicts.

Merco Docks Help Town Celebrate Independence Day

Local dock builder donates temporary docks to support Independence Day festivities. The City of Wellsburg’s courtesy docks are missing for the 2014 boating season after being deemed unsafe for public use and completely removed from the 12th street launch ramp area this past winter. The docks are typically used by the area’s boaters for 4th of July festivities in Wellsburg, where boating is a large part of the local community. With no city docks, there would be no public water based commerce or other boating activity over the holidays.

New Dry Dock Code

The UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) Defense Equipment and Services has commissioned Gifford, BMT Marine Projects Ltd, and Fleet Support Limited to produce a new Dry Dock Code of Practice. Clearly focused on the goal of safe dry-docking, the Code is aimed at the MoD, shipyards and other military and civil organizations involved in the dry docking of mono-hulled surface ships of over 500 tons. The Code provides a comprehensive and methodical framework for ship and dock owners and operators to review, and if appropriate further develop, the procedures and measures required for a safe dry docking. Although not prescriptive or intended for direct application, the Code provides a valuable framework for the development of safe in-house procedures. The ship is suitable to be dry-docked.

First Floating Dry Docks

The Operational and Maintenance departments of Antwerp Port Authority will shortly be merged to form a "Nautical & technical cluster." The new entity will have two floating dry docks at quay 602-612 for repairing its own fleet. This will put an end to the "fixed docks" on Dry Dock Island where the first facility was built in 1861. The new dry docks will be able to take vessels from 1500 to 1750 tonnes, with a width of up to 23 m and a draught of up to 7 m, and will be equipped with a crane with a lifting capacity of 10 tonnes.

First Ship Set to Enter BAE Systems’ New Dry Dock

BAE Systems will dock the first ship in its new floating dry dock, Pride of California, on Thursday, February 23. The docking of the San Diego-based amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) is expected to take up to five hours. The docking was originally planned for Wednesday, February 22, but was pushed back due to high wind conditions in San Diego. At 950 feet long and capable of lifting 55,000 long tons, BAE Systems’ new Pride of California dry dock is the largest floating dry dock in California.

Senesco Delivers Largest Commercial Floating Dry Dock

Senesco Marine of North Kingstown, R.I. launched the largest commercial floating dry dock in the Northeast United States on May 7, 2013. Senesco built the dry dock for Caddell Dry Dock and Repair Co. of Staten Island, N.Y. The dry dock has a lifting capacity of 7,300 LT, is 420 feet long, and has a 100-foot wide open pontoon deck between its 30-foot tall wing walls. JMS Naval Architects (JMS) of Mystic, Conn. designed the dry dock for Caddell to accommodate large tank barges, tugs, workboats and Coast Guard Cutters.

Dockmaster's Training Seminar Offered

Heger Dry Dock will present its four-day Dockmaster's Training Seminar during May 2000 in Seattle, Wash. Held from May 2-5, the course will provide the latest information on dry docks, and drydocking techniques to dockmasters, marine engineers, naval architects and others involved in the docking vessels. Topics for discussion throughout the course will include dry dock accidents, types of docks, ship characteristics important to drydocking and docking procedures.

NORSHIPCO to Purchase Dry Dock

The dock, expected to be operational by the end of May, will be relocated to NORSHIPCO and placed in an area previously occupied by a similar size dock, which was retired two years ago. The agreement provides additional opportunities for the exchange of work and dry dock utilization. The acquisition of the dock positions NORSHIPCO as a stronger competitor in the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial ship repair markets. The added dry dock capacity affords NORSHIPCO the opportunity to pursue additional areas of work, which could lead to more level-loading of the yard's skilled workforce. NORSHIPCO's workers specialize in the repair and modernization of Naval vessels and various cruise and commercial cargo fleets.

Liles Heads Structurmarine Timber Dock Division

David Liles was appointed U.S. sales director for the new division, bringing more than 30 years of marina experience in the timber dock market. Structurmarine recently announced its newest product line, Timber Dock Systems, geared to marina and harbor owners and operators. Timber Dock Systems use materials and hardware specifically selected to withstand a location's unique marine conditions, including saltwater installations. The heavy lateral laminated beams are sized and tailored for each site.

Dry Dock Conference 2014

Dry Dock Conference 2014 is the eighth in a series of international Conferences held every two to three years. This year’s conference will be held December 1-2, 2014 in New Orleans. Among the highlights of the upcoming New Orleans’ conference will be a series of presentations from experts on unique drydockings, heavy lift difficulties and ship launching challenges. The goal of the conference is to educate and provide technological updates to personnel in the dry dock industry.

Harris Pye Milestone, Two Vessels in Dry Docks

A new milestone has been achieved by the Harris Pye Group (HPG), vessels have been in both the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales dry docks in Swansea simultaneously – a first for the Group which signed a longer lease on the dry docks in April 2010 following the departure of Saga Pearl II which had been refurbished and refitted at the docks. The two vessels are Visten and Welsh Piper. The dredger, Welsh Piper, has now left having had her biannual special service, and undergone pipe replacement and steelwork (some 20 tonnes of steel were used in all). The Visten remains, she is owned by Canada’s CAI Logistics and is a tanker being converted into a bulk carrier. Work being undertaken includes the installation of two cargo cranes and the redesign of the hatch cover arrangement.

Allen Marine, Inc. has announced the construction of the world's first aluminum floating dry dock. This fully self-contained, eco-friendly unit represents a major breakthrough in boat-lifting equipment. The aluminum floating dry dock is the brainchild of CEO David Allen. The dry dock is 140 feet long, with 42 feet of space between the 26-foot tall wing walls. It is capable of lifting vessels of up to 1000 tons, at 5 LT/feet of keel block loading. The Allen Marine floating dry dock is unique because it is constructed entirely of marine-grade aluminum (a high-caliber alloy).

Damen Shipyards awarded to build Modular Dock for the Port of Djibouti. Damen Shipyards will construct a Damen Modular Dock (DMD) 4020 for - and will be delivered to - Djibouti. Djibouti’s busy port is one of the most important gateways to the African continent and is strategically located at the confluence of the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Juneau Moves Ahead with $50m Dock Plan

According to reports, Juneau leaders on continued to move forward with plans for a $50m cruise ship dock improvement plan that would allow two modern ships to dock at the same time by 2010. To do that, Port Director John Stone said some fees will increase dramatically. The city's Docks and Harbors Board is proposing construction of a floating berth in front of the current cruise ship dock that would accommodate two big ships. Use of the city dock now costs a ship 5.5 cents per ton to dock, but paying for the new improvements will boost that to 30 cents a ton. Other fees will change, however, including some going down. As an example, Stone said that means the new 1,868-passenger, 951-foot cruise ship Zuiderdam, which now costs $20,394 to dock in Juneau, would cost $28,233 in 2010.

Dangerous Drifting Dock Tracked Down by NOAA

NOAA successfully forecasted the path of a possible Japan Tsunami Dock adrift  off Washington Coast. The dock washed up on the rocky northern coast of Washington state just before Christmas. "We suspect—though we are still waiting for confirmation—that this dock began its oceanic journey in March of 2011 at the Port of Misawa, Japan, following the devastating TĹŤhoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Four docks were ripped away from this port. Although one of the four turned up several weeks later on an island south of Misawa, three of the large floating structures were still missing.

Marina In San Francisco Upgrades Docks

Located in the heart of San Mateo County, Oyster Point Marina, offers San Francisco boaters direct access to the bay. The City owned marina recently completed replacement of piers 8 and 11. Bellingham Marine, world renowned marina builder, was contracted to perform as the general contractor. Oyster Point’s existing 20 plus year old glu-lam, timber system was replaced with Bellingham Marine’s concrete floating docks fitted with upgraded utilities and accessories. Upgrades were made to the marina to provide improved moorage for boaters in the San Francisco Bay area.

New Patrol Boat Delivered to Puerto Rico PD

The Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) has taken delivery of a new patrol boat from Louisiana-based boatbuilder Metal Shark. The new 35-foot Defiant welded aluminum pilothouse patrol vessel, built at Metal Shark’s Jeanerette, La. production facility, joins the fleet of 36-foot Metal Shark Fearless-class high performance center console patrol boats delivered to the PRPD a year ago. The PRPD’s new patrol boat features a fully-enclosed, climate-controlled pilothouse for all weather operation, outfitted with Shockwave shock-mitigating seating for a crew of four, the builder said.

New Floating Dock Heads to Klaipeda

The world's largest heavy transport vessel Dockwise Vanguard is transporting a new floating dock from Montenegro to Lithuania. The floating dock was acquired in June 2016 and began its journey to Klaipeda, where it will be installed at the Western Shipyard owned by BLRT Grupp. In the beginning of August the 11,000 ton floating dock was loaded onto the Dockwise Vanguard, world's only vessel with a deadweight of 110,000 tons for carrying heavy loads and floating oil and gas platforms.

Grand Bahama Shipyard Acquires Portland's Number Four Dry Dock

Grand Bahama Shipyard purchased the No. 4 Dry Dock from Portland Shipyard in Oregon. Measuring 984 x 228 ft. (300 x 69.5 m), the floating dock, which has a clear internal breadth of 185 ft. (56.5 m), was constructed in Japan in 1979 and has a lifting capacity of 82,500 metric tons. The dock, which is one of the largest floating docks in the world is fully equipped to provide services for all types of vessels, and is capable of docking cargo vessels up to 250,000 tons dwt and cruise vessels up to 150,000 tons grt. Expected to be operational at the shipyard in early 2002, the new dock will complement the existing panamax floating dock, which was installed in 2000. The latter, which has a lifting capacity of 30,000 tons and clear internal dimensions of 879 x 110 ft.

USS San Francisco Leaves Dry Dock

USS San Francisco (SSN 711) left dry dock Arco (ARDM 5) at Naval Base Point Loma, Nov. The Los Angeles-class, fast-attack submarine pulled into dry dock June 30, for an extensive docking availability, the largest shipyard work period ever performed at Arco. "This type of availability normally takes a little over nine months; however, team San Francisco, Arco, and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard got the submarine in and out of dry dock in four months - a record," said Lt. Cmdr. Mack Schmidt, Arco's commanding officer. The crew that made up this dry docking evolution included Sailors from both San Francisco and Arco, as well as personnel from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. "I have been in the Navy 20 years and I have never come out of a dry dock early," said Lt.

New Corpus Christi Oil Loading Dock Sees First Tankship

NuStar Energy says it has completed construction of a private marine loading dock at its North Beach Terminal in Corpus Christi, Texas, and has its first ship at the dock to be loaded with crude oil. Originally scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of this year, NuStar expedited the project in order to meet strong customer interest in using the dock to transport shipments of Eagle Ford crude oil by water.
