RMC Begins Building Spirit of Tasmania RoPax

Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions said it has started building the first of two new car and passenger ferries for Spirit of Tasmania (TT-Line Company). The construction of the Spirit of Tasmania IV, set to operate between mainland Australia and Tasmania, kicked off with a traditional steel cutting ceremony.“Although the actual construction of the first ferry started today, RMC and Spirit of Tasmania already have a long history. Rauma Marine to Build Ferry for Kvarken Link

Finnish-Swedish passenger ferry operator Kvarken Link has signed a construction agreement with Finnish shipbuilding company Rauma Marine Constructions for a car and passenger ferry, set to operate between the Finnish city of Vaasa and the Swedish city of Umeå.Following the agreement, the planning of the vessel can begin with immediate effect. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Finland, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, and the Ministry of Finance have jointly enabled the quick execution of the agreement.“We reached an agreement in a little over a week after signing the letter of intent. Four Methanol-fueled Vessels Ordered in Korea

Four new vessels powered by methanol fuel will be built in Korea following investment from maritime industry stakeholders Waterfront Shipping Company Ltd. (WFS), Marinvest/Skagerack Invest (Marinvest), IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO), Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Mitsui) and the NYK Group (NYK). The four 49,000 dead weight tonne newbuilds will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for delivery in 2019. They will be powered by MAN B&W ME-LGI two-stroke dual-fuel engines that can run on methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel oil or gas oil.

Dual-fuel Escort Tug for Østensjø Rederi

The first of three new dual fuel RAstar 4000-DF class extreme escort tugs, the Dux, has been delivered to Østensjø Rederi AS by Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Gondán S.A. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., the 40.2 meter vessel is the first of a three boat order from Østensjø for severe weather operations at Statoil's Melkøya LNG Gas terminal at Hammerfest in the extreme north of Norway. These escort tugs will conduct approximately 300 LNG ship escorts annually, assist with berthing operations and will be maintained in readiness for emergency services such as long line towing…

Dual-fuel Solution to Drive World's Mightiest Cutter Dredger

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to supply a comprehensive package of engines and propulsion machinery for a new cutter suction dredger (CSD) vessel slated to become the world's most powerful and first ever to be fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The newbuild, Spartacus, is being built at the Royal IHC yard in the Netherlands on behalf of Belgium based Dredging International (DEME). The order with Wärtsilä, worth around $21 million, was booked in the fourth quarter of 2016. The 164-meter-long vessel will have a total installed power of 44,180 kW.

Odfjell Signs to Build Chem Carriers

Odfjell finalized the shipbuilding contracts with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) CO., Ltd in China to build a pair of chemical tankers. The two vessels will be 38,000 dwt, both with 40 tanks and a cargo capacity of about 45,000 cbm. Both vessels will be prepared for dual fuel solution. This order follows the orders for four 49,000 dwt vessels with 33 stainless steel cargo tanks. The capital commitments will be about $116 million. The first vessel will be delivered in June 2020 and the following vessel three months later.

Odfjell Inks LOI for Additional Chemical Tankers

Odfjell SE said it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) for two additional chemical tankers to be built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in China. The capital commitments will be about $116 million. The vessels will be 38,000 dwt with 40 stainless steel cargo tanks and a cargo capacity of about 45,000 cbm. Both vessels will be prepared for dual fuel solution. The LOI, which includes options, follows on orders already committed at the yard for four 49,000 dwt vessels with 33 stainless steel cargo tanks. “Following this order and other commitments recently taken, most of our renewal needs for the 'super segregators' have been met,” said Kristian Mørch, CEO of Odfjell SE.

MAN Diesel & Turbo successfully demonstrated its ME-LGI concept engine in front of customers and partners at its Diesel Research Center in Copenhagen on March 17th, the company announced today. “A number of years ago we identified the need to develop an engine that could run on more environmentally-friendly, competitively-priced fuels as an alternative to MDO/MGO," said Vice President and Head of R&D, Søren H. Jensen. "We believe the ability of the ME-LGI engine to run on sulfur-free fuels offers great potential. Methanol carriers have already operated at sea for many years.

New Partnership to Evaluate Dual Fuel Applications

American Power Group Corporation (APG) announced they will be working with Marine Fuel Conversions, LLC (MFC) to evaluate potential applications and opportunities for APG’s dual fuel solution specifically in marine applications including on-board prime and ancillary power as well as port based stationary power applications. MFC which is based in Glasgow, Scotland will be responsible for funding and coordinating all feasibility and beta testing activities necessary to determine how APG’s innovative Turbocharged Natural Gas dual fuel system  can be commercialized in Europe for marine applications. The feasibility/beta testing period is anticipated to run between nine to fifteen months.

The Fjords DA, operator of seven tourist ships in the Western Norwegian fjords, has revealed the name of the latest addition to its fleet. To be christened Vision of The Fjords, the 40m long hybrid craft is designed to push the possibilities of green technology and passenger experience. The 400-passenger capacity Vision of The Fjords, to be launched in June, is built from carbon fiber and has been designed with lines that resemble a twisting mountain path, complementing the scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Nærøyfjord it will voyage along.

Caterpillar Marine with Cat Dealer Pon Power are pleased to announce the first Cat 3512C marine generator sets with Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) have been selected to power Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro fast ferries for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 28 Cat generator sets will be installed on 7 aluminum-hull fast ferries, with 14x Cat 3512 generator sets and 14x Cat 9 generator sets providing prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator set will provide 1550 eKW @ 60 Hz of rated power. One ferry will be equipped with the new Cat marine dual fuel solution and powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). The remaining six ferries are being constructed with the option to readily retrofit the engine room to include the Dynamic Gas Blending kits in the future.

Wärtsilä Dual-Fuel Solution for Icebreaking LNG Carriers

The Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) yard in South Korea has ordered a total of 54 Wärtsilä dual fuel engines to power 172,600 cbm icebreaking LNG carriers being built for use in arctic conditions to serve the Yamal LNG project in Northern Russia. The ships will be owned by one joint venture between Teekay LNG Partners of Canada and China LNG Shipping (CLNG), and another joint venture between China Shipping LNG Investment Co.,Ltd. (CSLNG) and Japan based Mitsui O.S.K.
