My company has been around since 1875, and today we actually still do things that were being done in 1875. We still get calls from underwriters to attend on disasters all over the place, and we are still asked to provide values on ships on a moment’s notice.Moreover, some of the companies that ask us to attend to those issues, in some form or another, also have been around since 1875.That results in a very smooth operational routine, where we get a call from one of those clients in the middle of the night, we pull our pants on, step into the car and go out to see what is going on.

On July 20, 2018, The American Salvage Association (ASA) welcomed Dr. Richard J. Burke, of SUNY Maritime College as the Association’s very first honorary maritime academy faculty member representative. Naval architect Ian Lawson has been hired to join the naval architecture and marine engineering practice of Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI). Lawson holds a B.S. in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from Webb Institute, where he served as Class President and Honor Council Chairman, and participated on the Education Committee, sailing team, jazz band and choir during his time at Webb. Lawson interned at BHGI in January and February of this year. He has a keen interest in the marine LNG industry. Prior to interning at BHGI, Ian spent the previous winter working on an LNG carrier.

T&T Salvage, LLC has appointed Rebecca Garcia as Assistant Director of Vessel Services, primarily responsible for assisting the compliance team in finding customer-centric solutions to the latest regulatory requirements set forth by the OPA-90 regulations, while also identifying and introducing custom emergency management solutions to T&T’s global customer base. Garcia comes from a career at Svitzer Salvage and Ardent Global where she helped establish and develop the organization’s OPA-90 compliance program.

Webb Institute announced that Matthew R. Werner has been named Webb Institute’s next Academic Dean. Professor Werner, the American Bureau of Shipping Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, will begin his term on July 1, 2015. Professor Werner is an accomplished educator with extensive leadership and administrative experience. Professor Werner began his career in the ship design, construction, and operations fields and joined the Webb faculty in 2002. In 2010, he was designated Webb’s first American Bureau of Shipping Chair in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

The American Salvage Association’s (ASA) Education Committee Fundraiser will be hosted by TITAN Salvage on Thursday, January 22, at the Houston Maritime Museum. Grace D. Thomas, Senior Vice President at Great American Insurance Company and a former Chairperson of the Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA), was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the association’s Annual Meeting held mid-May. Ms. Thomas was one of three individuals recognized by the IMUA. The others included Arthur L. Flitner, CPCU, Senior Director of Knowledge Resources at The Institutes – Excellence in Education; and Julie A. Saunders, Inland Marine Business Unit Audit Lead, Travelers – 2012 Outstanding Committee Person.

The National Shippers Strategic Transportation Council, NASSTRAC, announces agenda for 2013 Shippers Conference & Transportation Expo. This event, which is developed specifically for the education and networking needs of transportation and supply chain executives with manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers and distributors, will take place April 21-24, 2013 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando. This year's conference will feature more than 25 educational sessions that cover relevant topics on transportation that range from economic freight indicators and perspectives of carrier challenges from CEOs in all modes to advocacy issues such as hours of service and CSA.

The National Shippers Strategic Transportation Council (NASSTRAC) names Candace Holowwicki as committee chairwoman. NASSTRAC provides education, advocacy, and provider relations for professionals involved in all modes of transportation. Ms.Holowicki’s primary responsibilities will include leading the planning and execution of the NASSTRAC Shippers Conference & Transportation Expo, which will take place April 21-24, 2013, in Orlando. Ms. Holowicki, who has nearly 20 years experience in the transportation industry, is currently director of global logistics at TriMas Corp., a manufacturer and distributor near Detroit, Mich. She has served on NASSTRAC’s education committee since 2009, and also currently serves on its executive committee.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) announced that a program dedicated to the training of future naval systems engineers will soon be realized. A $3.2m contract awarded May 6 from the Naval Sea Systems Command, which includes five additional years of optional extensions that could add up to $49.9m, will establish a Naval Engineering Education Center (NEEC) Consortium in partnership with fifteen leading US colleges and universities, SNAME and the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE).
