ClassNK Concludes CBM Research Agreement

Classification Society ClassNK has concluded a joint research agreement for developing advanced condition-based maintenance (CBM), a new maintenance and management process for engine machinery plants, and establishing a new classification survey scheme based on CBM.In the joint research project, engine conditions will be continuously monitored and involve the real-time sharing of detailed data acquired from sources including SIMS2 developed by NYK Group and the newly installed sensors of large main engines.

CSSC CMC Wins MED Certificates from DNV GL

The international accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL announced the award of three Marine Equipment Directive (MED) certificates to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Marine Technology Co., Ltd. Mitsubishi, Wärtsilä Joins for Improved Power and Propulsion Solution

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., LTD (MHI-MME) and the smart technology group Wärtsilä have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the commercial marketing of a new energy solution for ships. The solution combines innovative technologies from both companies to produce greater power generation capacity and higher propeller propulsion for marine vessels. By integrating MHI-MME's waste heat recovery and energy saving power generation system (WHRS) with Wärtsilä's operational control technology for shaft generator systems, the new solution results in more energy efficient ship navigation and an improved Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

First TTS Shipset Delivered to COSCO Shanghai Shipyard

TTS Group announced the delivery of the first of four shipset of TTS deck equipment to COSCO Shanghai Shipyard. In April 2015, Shanghai Shipyard Co. Ltd., part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), ordered various TTS deck equipment for four 28.000 DWT Multipurpose Heavy Lift Vessels. The first official hand over took place this week end. The vessels are part of the ongoing fleet extension program of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO). COSCO already operates eight identically constructed vessels (Da Type 3) with a maximum lifting capacity of 700t in tandem operation – the largest cranes in the fleet, all made by TTS NMF. Each ship is equipped with two heavy lift cranes of proven TTS NMF type DK II with SWL 350t and one TTS NMF type DK II SWL 100t lifting capacity.

Kalmar Reachstacker for JR Intermodal Green Transport Terminal, Texas

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, and its US dealership Darr Equipment Co. of Houston have delivered a Kalmar Super Gloria reachstacker for barge handling to the JR Intermodal Green Transport Terminal in Texas. The order was booked in August 2015, with delivery on May 30, 2016. This unique reachstacker is the first Kalmar Super Gloria that has been delivered to the Western Hemisphere. The unit can reach the fourth row in a barge, which is further than Kalmar's standard reachstacker, and lifts 45 metric tonnes. The Kalmar DRG450-92HCS5XS reachstacker has a long nose and over height legs for negative lift, and good capacity retention (27 metric tonnes in the fourth row with the support jacks down).

Massive Lift Boat Delivered to Milaha

Milaha has taken delivery of a new lift boat which will be deployed offshore, particularly in support of field maintenance efforts. Named the Milaha Explorer, the new lift boat was built by Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. at its yard in Liaoning Province in China, and was designed by the China-based Tianjin De-Sail Machinery Equipment Co. Ltd. Milaha Explorer will be the biggest lift boat to be owned by a Qatari company, with a large deck area and variable load capacity, as well as the ability to accommodate 300 persons on board.

New Offshore Vessel to be Fitted with Cathelco BWTS

Cathelco is supplying a ballast water treatment (BWT) system for a new offshore vessel built by Eastern Shipbuilding Group Inc., for Harvey Gulf International Marine, LLC. The Harvey Stone (Hull 234), a Rampage 6400 multipurpose field support vessel (MPFSV), with a length of 64.8m and 18m beam, is due to be delivered in Q2 2016. The Cathelco BWT system is based on a combination of filtration and UV technology and has a capacity of 150m3/hr. Cathelco’s well established agent in New Orleans, Green Marine & Industrial Equipment Co.,Inc.,won the order.

Liebherr-Werk Biberach Wins Orders from Australia & New Zealand

Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH has managed to win several orders in Australia and New Zealand. During the last few weeks four luffing jib cranes from the HC-L series and a top-slewing crane from the EC-H series have left Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH for the voyage down under. Liebherr's exclusive distributor in Australia, Morrow Equipment Co. L.L.C. based in Caringbah, NSW near Sydney, has expanded its crane fleet. Morrow continues to expand its hire fleet with the purchase of two new 542 HC-L 18/36 Litronic cranes and a used 540 HC-L model. The high level of usage of the existing hire fleet, positive signals from the market and several pending large projects in the cities of Sydney and Brisbane were the reasons behind the purchases.

Caterpillar To Launch New CAT® CG137-8 Generator Set

Caterpillar Oil & Gas will unveil the new Cat CG137-8 natural gas generator set  at the Bismarck Civic Center in Bismarck, North Dakota during the 2014 Williston Basin Petroleum Conference  now in progress from May 20 – 22nd. The new Cat CG137-8 generator set provides 282 ekW (352 kVA), 60 Hz @ 1800 rpm of rated power, offering customers an additional power node to complement existing Cat power solutions in land production applications. Hamworthy Delivers Pumps for Four VLCCs

Fluid-handling specialist Hamworthy has signed a contract with marine equipment purchaser Hua Hai Engineering & Equipment Co., Ltd to deliver pump room systems for installation on four very large crude carriers (VLCCs) to be constructed in China. The ships, which will be built for CSC Nanjing Tanker Co., Ltd (NJTC) at Guangzhou Longxue Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, follow on from 10 previous VLCCs contracted by the same owner at Jiangnan Shipyard and Bohai Shipyard, all of which are being equipped with pump room systems from Hamworthy. “This contract was won due to the proven technical ability of our equipment on previously built VLCCs,” said Terje Bjornemo, Hamworthy Pump Room Systems Sales Director.

The Delaware River Pilots Association recently contracted with Carey's Diesel to repower a vessel with a pair of Isotta Fraschini marine diesel engines, rated at 550 hp @ 2,400 rpm. This is the third vessel the Pilots Association has chosen to repower using Isotta Fraschini engines. The first Isotta Fraschini repowers were two 56,000-lb. vessels named Wilmington and Delaware. Wilmington's two 8V-72T Detroit Diesel two-cycle, eight cylinder engines were replaced with two V1308T2 MLH Isotta Fraschini four-stroke, V-8 cylinder marine diesel engines. Delaware's two 8V-92 Detroit Diesel two-cycle, eight cylinder engines were replaced with a pair of V1312T2 MLH Isotta Fraschini four-stroke, V-12 cylinder marine diesel engines.

The Switch's New Generator Passes Initial Tests

The Switch, a manufacturer of permanent magnet generators and full-power converters, announced that its 8.6 MW permanent magnet generator (PMG) for offshore use passed initial no-load testing. The massive drive train component is scheduled to undergo complete full-load tests in the upcoming weeks. The Switch’s medium-speed, rear-mounted PMG design brings together both low- and high-speed technology, resulting in increased annual energy production, particularly at partial loads.

China's Offshore Wind Farms in the Doldrums

The second round of bidding for offshore concession projects, which had been scheduled to start in the first half of 2012, is likely to be put off due to significant delays in the first concession projects," Shi Pengfei, vice-president of the China Wind Energy Association told 'China Daily'. The second group of concession projects, totaling up to 2 gigawatts, are to be built in Jiangsu, Hebei, Shandong, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces. According to the National Energy Administration, China will build 5 gW of offshore wind projects by 2015. But Shi said delays may mean missing the target. China's installed offshore wind power capacity was only 258 megawatts last year, statistics from the Global Wind Energy Council show..

Steinberg Retires from IPS

Industrial Power Systems, Inc. (IPS) announced the retirement of Jerry Steinberg, after almost 16 years with the company as its Vice President – Sales & Marketing. Jerry is being replaced by Michael Phelan as its new Director of Sales & Marketing. Jerry graduated from the University of Illinois in 1961, and immediately after graduation joined Cummins Engine Co., where he had several domestic positions in Columbus, Indiana before moving into their International Sales organization with time living in both London, England and Sao Paulo, Brazil. This was followed by a number of years with Waukesha Engine, ending as their VP – Sales & Marketing. Jerry then had a number of years in the distribution business, working with both Power Equipment Inc. in Ohio and Reagan Equipment Co. in Florida.

Cathelco Protects New USCG Cutters

A series of fast response cutters being built for the U.S. Coast Guard will be protected against hull corrosion and marine pipework bio-fouling with a system manufactured by Cathelco Ltd. The Sentinel Class cutters, measuring 154 ft in length and capable of speeds of more than 28 knots, are being constructed at the Bollinger Shipyard’s facility in Lockport, La. The order for the Cathelco equipment has been won by Russ Equipment Co. Inc., Cathelco’s agent based in New Orleans.
