GE Propulsion Onboard German Navy’s New Frigate

The German Navy’s fourth and final new F125 frigate Rheinland-Pfalz was christened during a ceremony held at the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard in Hamburg on May 24. The German Navy's third F125-class frigate Sachsen-Anhalt was christened in March during a ceremony held at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard in Hamburg. German Navy Frigates Get New Firefighting Tech

On April 16, 2015, the second of four ordered Type F125 frigates for the German Navy was christened by the name of Nordrhein-Westfalen in Hamburg. GE Gas Turbine Powers German Navy Frigate

GE Marine reports that the German Navy’s Baden-Württemberg(F125-class) frigatewas christened in December 2013, powered by a GE LM2500 gas turbine-based propulsion system. The christening ceremony was held at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in Hamburg, Germany. According Dr. MTU Friedrichshafen, a GE Marine System Supplier, provided the ship’s propulsion module, which includes one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets in a combined diesel-electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion arrangement.

Atlas Elektronik , Thales to Modernize F124 Frigate

Atlas Elektronik and Thales Deutschland have been jointly commissioned to modernize the combat system of the German Class F124 frigates. The CEOs of both enterprises recently signed the contract at the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) in Koblenz. With completion scheduled for 2017, the “HW Regeneration CDS F124” consortium formed by the two companies will refurbish the hardware of the Combat Direction System (CDS) and also adapt and update the software. The regeneration process is driven by the sweeping implementation of commercial hardware and software because technological development in this field is progressing at a rapid pace.

GE to Provide MTU with LM2500 Gas Turbine

GE Marine reports that it will provide MTU Friedrichshafen, Friedrichshafen, Germany, with one LM2500 gas turbine for the German Navy’s fourth Baden-Württemberg-class (F125) frigate. For each new F125 frigate, MTU will provide the German Navy with one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets in combined diesel-electric and gas turbine propulsion arrangement. The keel for the first F125 frigate was laid in November 2011 at the Blohm +Voss shipyard in Hamburg.

GE Supplies MTU with LM2500 Gas Turbine

GE Marine reported that it will supply MTU, Friedrichshafen, Germany, with one LM2500 gas turbine to power the German Navy’s F125 frigate. MTU is a GE Marine System Supplier. The Baden-Wurttemberg class frigate will use a combined diesel electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) system featuring one LM2500 gas turbine and four MTU 20V 4000 M53B diesel engines and generators. The generators will produce a total of 12,060 kilowatts/16,400 horsepower for the ship’s on-board power supply system, and/or provide diesel-electric propulsion power for cruising speeds of up to 20 knots.

GE To Supply Gas Turbines for Royal Norwegian Navy

GE Marine Engines reported that its LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine will power five new Royal Norwegian Navy F310-class frigates. IZAR Construcciones Navales, S.A., will build the frigates at its naval shipyard in Ferrol, Spain. This is the first naval Combined Diesel And Gas Turbine (CODAG) configuration to be installed by IZAR, and the Royal Norwegian Navy is only the second international navy to adopt this arrangement. The Germany Navy uses an LM2500-based CODAG configuration on its new F124-class frigates. The CODAG configuration on each F310-class frigate will consist of one GE LM2500 gas turbine, rated at 21.5 megawatts/28,832 shaft horsepower, combined with the two diesel engines for a total propulsion system rating of 30.5 megawatts.
