Harris Joins J.F. Lehman Operating Executive Board

Frederick J. Harris, recently retired president of General Dynamics NASSCO and Bath Iron Works shipyards, has joined the operating executive board (OEB) of private equity firm J.F. Lehman & Company. The OEB is a group of industry and government executives with significant experience in the firm’s target industries. Through key relationships and sector-specific knowledge, OEB members contribute to sourcing and evaluating transactions, advising on portfolio company strategy and recruiting senior level portfolio company management.

Fred Harris to Retire

General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) said that in the wake the retirement of Frederick J. Harris  effective January 1, 2017, Dirk A. Lesko will be a vice president of the corporation and appointed as president of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, and Kevin M. Graney will be a vice president of the corporation and appointed as president of General Dynamics NASSCO. “Dirk and Kevin are seasoned leaders with proven track records of managing complex shipbuilding projects and driving continuous improvement at every level of their business,” said John P. Casey, executive vice president, Marine Systems.

Cotton, Cox, Harris Receive '14 AOTOS Awards

The United Seamen's Service (USS) 2014 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards (AOTOS) were presented to Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF); Joseph J. Cox, President/CEO, Chamber of Shipping of America; and Frederick J. Harris, President of General Dynamics NASSCO and Bath Iron Works, an American shipbuilder. The maritime industry's most prestigious awards were presented at a gala industry dinner and dance held at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, New York City, on November 7, 2014.

Cape Ray to be Honored at USS AOTOS Event

The MV Cape Ray, a Keystone-managed Ready Reserve Force containership that worked in the Mediterranean Sea for the U.S. Government neutralizing chemical material from Syria, will receive a special recognition on November 7 at the United Seamen's Service Admiral of the Ocean Sea (USS AOTOS) event. Military and civilian specialists spent some 10 months completing the mission of neutralizing more than 600 tons or 80 percent of Syria's stockpile. The effluents were then dropped off at Finland and Germany for final disposal.

USS AOTOS 2014 Award Winners Named

General Dynamics Make Leadership Changes

Jeffrey S. Geiger, president of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, will become president of General Dynamics Electric Boat effective November 4, 2013, following the retirement of Kevin J. Poitras. Geiger will continue reporting to John P. Casey, executive vice president of Marine Systems for General Dynamics. In addition, Frederick J. Harris will remain as president of General Dynamics NASSCO and will also serve as president of Bath Iron Works. NASSCO Awarded $940m - T-AKE Ship

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) , has been awarded a $940m contract from the U.S. Navy for the construction of two T-AKE dry cargo-ammunition ships and to purchase long-lead construction materials for two additional T-AKE ships. Under the contract, NASSCO receives full funding for the construction of USNS Washington Chambers (T-AKE 11) and USNS William McLean (T-AKE 12). Earlier this year, NASSCO received a total of $200m to purchase the long lead materials for these ships. Construction of the Washington Chambers and the William McLean is scheduled to begin in the first and fourth quarters of 2009, respectively.

NASSCO Delivers USNS Amelia Earhart

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), delivered USNS Amelia Earhart (T-AKE 6) to the U.S. Navy on October 30. The ship is named in honor of the record-setting aviator. “We have reduced the man-hours to build this sixth ship of the T-AKE class by nearly 50 percent when compared to the production time of the lead ship,” said Frederick J. Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO. Construction of the USNS Amelia Earhart began in December 2006. NASSCO has incorporated international marine technologies and commercial ship-design features into T-AKE class ships, including an integrated electric-drive propulsion system, to minimize operating costs during their projected 40-year service life.

NASSCO Lays Keel of USNS Wally Schirra

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics laid the keel for USNS Wally Schirra, the eighth dry cargo-ammunition ship in the U.S. Navy’s T-AKE program. Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter recently named the ship in honor of the late Navy captain and original NASA pioneer. The Wally Schirra is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the third quarter of 2009. On April 21, NASSCO will begin construction of the ninth ship of the Lewis and (T-AKE) class. The ship will be named later and is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the first quarter of 2010. “From keel-laying to delivery, NASSCO is significantly reducing the T-AKE build cycle with each subsequent ship and providing substantial cost savings to the Navy,” said Frederick J.

NASSCO Begins Construction of New Commercial Ships

General Dynamics NASSCO began construction of its first product carrier ship for U.S. Shipping Partners (NYSE: USS). NASSCO is building the ship from designs provided through its collaboration with DSEC of Korea, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. The San Diego shipyard is scheduled to lay the ship’s keel in December and deliver the ship in early 2009. “Start of construction of a lead ship is the most significant activity for a shipyard,” said Frederick J. Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO. “As the leading builder of ocean-going Jones Act ships in the nation today, we are ready to build this ship. In August 2006, NASSCO received a $1 billion contract from U.S. Shipping Partners to build nine ships.

Grace Retires from NASSCO

General Dynamics NASSCO announced the retirement of Janice S. Grace, its senior vice president of operations, on June 30. Grace, 55, had served as the shipyard’s second-ranking executive since February 2004. "This shipyard is indebted to the significant contributions and outstanding leadership of Janice Grace," said Frederick J. Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO. "She is a pioneer in our industry and for this shipyard. She has left her mark on the shipbuilding that will take place here well into the future." As senior vice president of operations, Grace was responsible for all production, engineering, materials, master planning and information systems activities at the shipyard.

Lead Ship of T-AKE Class Delivered

General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the USNS Lewis and Clark (T-AKE 1) to the U.S. Navy. The ship is named after Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who led a legendary exploration of the American West from 1804 to 1806. USNS Lewis and Clark is the first of an expected class of 11 dry cargo-ammunition ships. With modular cargo holding and handling systems, the Lewis and Clark can replenish combat ships at sea with ammunition, food or fuel in one mission and then be quickly reconfigured for an alternate mission, such as a humanitarian sealift of supplies. The ship incorporates international marine technologies and commercial ship-design features, including an integrated electric-drive propulsion system, to minimize operating costs over its projected 40-year service life.

NASSCO, Daewoo Team to Build Jones Act Ships

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), and Daewoo Ship Engineering Company (DSEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) based in Busan, Korea, announced a formal teaming agreement to build ships for the U.S. market under the Jones Act. The Jones Act, among its many provisions, requires ships that carry cargo between U.S. ports to be built in the United States. Under the agreement, DSEC will provide the detail designs, support services and some of the material necessary for ship production. NASSCO will also procure material and will provide the labor and facilities to construct the ships here.

General Dynamics Board of Directors Elect VPs

The board of directors of General Dynamics elected two new vice presidents of the corporation: Frederick J. Harris, 60, who will succeed Richard H. Vortmann as president of subsidiary National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO); and Chris Marzilli, 46, who will succeed Mark A. Fried as president of business unit General Dynamics C4 Systems. Harris and Marzilli will assume their new positions and become vice presidents of the corporation on January 1. Harris started with General Dynamics Electric Boat in 1973 as a senior engineer in the Trident ballistic-missile submarine program. Harris Named President of NASSCO

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, announced that effective January 1, 2006, Frederick J. Harris, 60, will become president of NASSCO, succeeding Richard H. Vortmann, 61.
