Kawasaki Wins AiP for LNG Floating Power Plant
Japanese manufacturer of transportation equipment and machinery announced that it has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) floating power plant equipped with its own gas turbine (combined cycle power plant (CCPP) model).This approval was obtained from world-leading ship classification organization DNV GL based on its latest “Gas Power Plant” rules, which were introduced in 2018.An LNG floating power plant is an integrated system in which LNG fuel tanks, LNG regasification unit, power generation equipment and switchyard are all outfitted on the hull.
Wärtsilä Rolls-out Pure Gas Marine Engine
Finnish corporation Wärtsilä has launched the 31SG pure gas engine for marine market applications.The 31SG is based on the successful Wärtsilä 31 product platform; the diesel version of the engine has been recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine.The Wärtsilä 31SG engine further reduces the total cost of ownership and the environmental footprint for vessels operating in regions where there is a developed gas infrastructure.
Gazprom Neft, USC Join for LNG Project

KHI Wins AiP from DNV GL for LFPP
The international accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL has awarded the Japanese multinational corporation Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) an Approval in Principle (AIP) for their LNG floating power plant (LFPP).The classification body said in a press release that the LFPP is a decentralized energy generation solution that enables locations to tap into natural gas as part of their power mix.The LFPP concept is designed for installation in areas where energy demand is rapidly increasing, but onshore infrastructure is not feasible or commercially viable.
Kongsberg Wins LNG, Battery Propulsion Contract
Kongsberg Maritime will supply a Power & Propulsion System for a new LNG powered multi-purpose cargo vessel of design MM85CC LNG by Multi Maritime.The clean and efficient Kongsberg Maritime propulsion system features a Bergen B36:45L6PG gas engine and LNG control and safety system, a Promas controllable pitch propeller and rudder system, together with a battery pack to enable periods of emission free operation in ports and environmentally sensitive areas.The 3,500dwt vessel is currently under construction at Tersan Shipyard, Turkey, for Norwegian ship owner Egil Ulvan Rederi AS.
MAN ES: New Low-Pressure, Two-Stroke, Gas Engine in the Works
MAN Energy Solutions Two-Stroke Business Unit has initiated the development of a low-pressure gas engine as a supplement to its existing dual-fuel ME-GI engine.“We already offer the most sophisticated and technologically-advanced gas engine on the two-stroke market with our ME-GI type, and we are hungry for more," said Bjarne Foldager, SVP, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions. First Mobile MTU Gas Engines for Rederij Doeksen
The first two preproduction units of the new mobile MTU gas engine from Rolls-Royce have completed performance tests and were accepted by the customer at the beginning of December. MTU delivered the first two of a total of four 16-cylinder Series 4000 gas engines, each with an output of 1,492 kW, for two new catamarans. From 2018, the two aluminum vessels will operate ferry services on the Dutch Wadden Sea. They are currently being built by Strategic Marine’s shipyard in Vietnam for the Dutch shipping company Doeksen.

Lake Constance Ferry to Test MTU Gas Engine
From 2019, Rolls-Royce Power Systems and the City of Constance public utility are to begin testing the marine propulsion technology of the future on Lake Constance. This takes the form of a gas engine carrying the MTU brand. The public utility's new car ferry is to be equipped with twin eight-cylinder Series 4000 gas engines from MTU, each delivering 746 kW. This makes it the first inland waterway passenger vessel in Europe to be propelled by straightforward high-speed gas engines. The fuel will be liquefied natural gas.
New MTU Engines Make Their Debut
At the international maritime exhibition Nor-Shipping in Oslo from May 30 to June 2 2017, MTU, part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, presented its propulsion and systems portfolio, primarily for offshore supply vessels, workboats and ferries. This included Series 2000, 4000 and 8000 propulsion engines in an output range from 400 to 10,000 kW, hybrid propulsion solutions and diesel electric propulsion systems and diesel gensets for the supply of on-board power. Rolls-Royce showcased MTU’s Series 4000 diesel engine meeting IMO III and EPA Tier 4 emission regulations.
Rolls-Royce Bags 15 Engine Order in Norway
Rolls-Royce said it has signed a deal to supply 15 gas engines to Norwegian Ferry Company, Torghatten Nord AS. The engines will power five Multi Maritime designed LNG ferries operating between Bergen and Stord. MAN Diesel & Turbo’s after-sales division MAN PrimeServ has signed a maintenance contract with Teekay Shipping, one of the world’s largest marine energy transportation, storage and production companies. The new EMC (Engine Management Concept) contract is for the maintenance of the Oak Spirit, Creole Spirit and Torben Spirit, sisters from Teekay’s 173,400-m3 LNG carrier series. The agreement covers the provision of spare-parts, maintenance management and the servicing of each vessel’s 2 × 5G70ME-GI (-Gas Injection) dual-fuel main engines.
