Tymor Marine Gets Grant Funding to Refine Draft Survey Tech

A maritime technology company based in Aberdeen has been awarded funding from Scottish Enterprise to support the development of an app-based version of its breakthrough draft survey technology. BWTS Technology Adapted to Fight COVID-19

CSMC Uses SKF Equipment

The oceangoing vessel operator Capital Ship Management Corp (CSMC) used SKF equipment to control maintenance costs and avoid breakdowns.SKF’s marine condition monitoring kit is helping a leading ship operator to manage costs and prevent equipment failure across its fleet, said a press release.CSMC has been investigating condition monitoring strategies since 2006, in order to reduce the maintenance costs and minimize the unexpected machinery & equipment breakdown.Together with SKF, Capital came up with an effective strategy by utilizing a new handheld device, launched recently by SKF; the SKF Quick Collect. The company has implemented the solution across a fleet of 30 vessels, with a plan to extend the program for the whole fleet of 56 vessels.

Intellicheck Mobilisa Awarded TWIC Contract

Intellicheck Mobilisa (NYSE Amex: IDN) announced that they were awarded a contract with the Port of New York/New Jersey to supply them with mobile Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) readers and access control systems to support the Department of Homeland Security TWIC Pilot project. The Transportation Worker Identity Credential, or TWIC, program is a Transportation Security Administration and U.S. Coast Guard initiative that provides tamper-resistant biometric identification cards to port facility workers. Virginia Port Launches Trusted Agent Program

Orsus(R) announced that the Virginia Port Authority has initiated a project to leverage Orsus' Situator(TM) to monitor visitors without the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). The program, being called Trusted Agent by the Virginia Port Authority, allows trusted visitors access to secure areas of the Port by providing them with a Nextel Sprint phone equipped with a radio and navigational system from Xora Co. When paired up with Situator from Orsus, it provides Command Center operators with the ability to track and monitor their whereabouts on Port property and directly contact them. The Virginia Port Authority came up with this solution after recognizing the challenges posed by TWIC requirements.

Feature: Will there be a Feeder Frenzy?

A study commissioned by Lloyd's Register and conducted by Ocean Shipping Consultants has determined that major investment will be required in feeder and shortsea containerships through to the end of the decade, in support of surging development in the trade and in the size of the deepsea mainline vessels. Over 25 percent of today's worldwide boxship fleet, and nearly 60 percent of the present orderbook, is in the post-Panamax category, and it appears ever more likely that the industry will see the first 12,500-TEU vessels before 2011. "The demand for big ships will clearly lead to higher demand for transhipment," said David Tozer, Lloyd's Register's Business Manager, Container Ships.
