WinGD to Integrate Hybrid Energy Systems on NYK's Car Carrier Quartet

WinGD, an engine maker for the merchant shipping industry, has won a contract to integrate hybrid energy systems on four newbuild car carriers for Japanese owner NYK Line.The company said the order further expanded its portfolio of future-ready power solutions for companies navigating shipping’s energy transition.The four pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) will run on LNG, with WinGD’s 7X62DF-2.1 two-stroke engines coupled with shaft generators, DC-links and battery systems.WinGD said it has optimized spinning reserves…

UK to Promote Hybrid Ferries

UK Chamber of Shipping has called for more hybrid ferries as part of tackling climate change.UK Chamber of Shipping Chief executive Bob Sanguinetti visited Wightlink in Portsmouth where he was shown their state-of-the-art hybrid ferry.Victoria of Wight, which takes passengers all year round to the Isle of Wight, entered service in August 2018 and was the first hybrid ferry in England. The ship uses a hybrid energy system, which works much like a hybrid energy car, allowing her to run partly on electricity when required. At the time of launching the Victoria of Wight used 17% less fuel than the next largest ship on the route, the St Clare.Speaking during his visit Bob Sanguinetti said:  â€śAt the UK Chamber of Shipping we are determined to do all we can to help tackle climate change.

Carnival Corporation announced its Germany-based brand, AIDA Cruises, has partnered with leaders from the maritime and engineering sectors to pilot the world’s first fuel cell system designed to power large passenger vessels. Blueday System for new Trawler

The renovated NordnesGruppen trawler Nordbas will feature an integrated power system that will allow the ship to go diesel free for hours and run on renewable electricity.The new hybrid power system is being designed by Blueday Technology. Blueday’s team have worked with NordnesGruppen to design a bespoke, hybrid energy system for Nordbas, which will be refitted at Kleven shipyard in Norway.When deciding to rebuild Nordnes, NordnesGruppen decided to focus on reducing the environmental footprint of the renovated trawler and asked several companies to put forward proposals.Blueday’s design covers the ship’s automation and power system and uses the power generated by the Danish seine system’s winches to regenerate the onboard energy storage system…

Hybrid Energy Storage Solution Installed on Viking Princess

Wärtsilä said it completed the installation of a hybrid energy system on board offshore supply vessel (OSV) Viking Princess. The Norwegian vessel is now the first ever OSV in which batteries reduce the number of generators aboard the ship. The new energy storage solution will improve engine efficiency, generate fuel savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Viking Princess completed sea trials and the system was handed over to customer Eidesvik Offshore on October 9, 2017.

Wärtsilä to Replace OSV’s Generator with Batteries

Wärtsilä informs it has signed an agreement with Norway’s Eidesvik Offshore to install a hybrid system with batteries on board of its offshore supply vessel (OSV) Viking Princess. Batteries will reduce the number of generators on board Viking Princess, and the new energy storage solution will improve engine efficiency, generating fuel savings and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Wärtsilä said. The five-year-old Viking Princess, which provides supplies to oil rigs in the North Sea and Barents Sea, runs on four LNG-powered Wärtsilä engines.

Developing a Roadmap for Green Coastal Shipping

The Norwegian authorities’ target for 2030 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to what they were 40 years earlier. By doing so, Norway will set the direction for the shipping industry and continue to be a front-runner. The entire Norwegian shipping industry as well as the Norwegian authorities have gathered to create the Green Coastal Shipping Programme. The programme participants are now ready to share their views and recommend progress in a roadmap addressed to the Norwegian Government. “Our vision is to go further into the future to ensure that Norway has established the world’s most efficient and environmentally friendly coastal shipping by 2050.

Wärtsilä launched its new Low Loss Hybrid (LLH) innovation at ONS 2014. The Wärtsilä LLH uses different power sources in combination with energy storage devices to operate the prime movers closest to their optimum performance. In addition to annual fuel savings of up to 15%, depending on the type and configuration of the engine and mission profile, the LLH ensures a substantial reduction in exhaust gas emissions, the manufacturer said. The Wärtsilä LLH was earlier this year installed and tested aboard the Platform Supply Vessel Viking Lady.

Corvus Energy Supplies Battery Pack, Systems, to 'Viking Lady'

Corvus Energy supplies world's first commercial ship with a fuel cell specially adapted for marine use. Following the success of the installation and demonstration of the fuel cell power pack on board, Viking Lady recently entered into a third project phase in which energy storage capability in the form of Corvus’ AT6500 lithium-polymer battery pack is being integrated in the power system. The lithium-polymer battery is comprised of 6.5 kWh modules, has a capacity of 455 kWh, and is capable of delivering up to 4MWh bursts over a short period of time.
