Tech File: HydroComp NavCad for Optimized Design

Schematic and implemented bulb geometry

HydroComp NavCad, internationally recognized for resistance and propulsion prediction for naval architects, can also leverage analysis capabilities with features that support optimized hull form and propulsion system design. NavCad may be most well-known for its library of parametric-statistical hull form and propulsion system models (often called “1D” models). The recent introduction of the Premium Edition now brings a higher-order distributed-analytical (“2D”) hull form analysis to design optimization.

HydroComp PropElements 2017- Update

HydroComp PropElements 2017 – the propeller “design for performance” code from HydroComp,Inc. of Durham NH USA – is the latest build of the company’s commercial software for marine propeller design and analysis. Propeller specialists will find it an essential addition to their software tools, and also tackles the component-level hydrodynamic needs of naval architects. Why PropElements? Still an uncharted domain for many naval architects, propeller design is an iterative process following a typical design spiral – from initial sizing through detail design. System-level propulsion design and analysis tools (such as HydroComp NavCad) are used in early design stages to identify principal propeller parameters (e.g.…

Better CFD Process with Rapid Design Space Optimization

control managed by Excel. A Design-Of-Experiments optimization for 27 variants is illustrated. The resistance prediction was by HydroComp’s “Prismatic Wave Drag” distributed volume wave-theory method. Total calculation time was less than three minutes, including development of the variant geometry in Excel, calculation via NavCad Premium, and reporting and graphing of results back in Excel.

HydroComp, Inc. of Durham, N.H. Rapid Design Space Optimization (RDSO) with HydroComp NavCad Premium allows a naval architect to focus CFD resources on high-value computations and avoid irrelevant time and expense. HydroComp NavCad provides resistance and propulsion prediction for naval architects. With the recent introduction of the Premium Edition, NavCad is now able to provide integrated support for design optimization. To ensure that process efficiency and cost-effectiveness of resource-intensive CFD calculations are as high as possible…

New Submarine and SWATH Capabilities for HydroComp NavCad

The screen image displays the data entry table and process buttons.

HydroComp NavCad is a software tool for the prediction and analysis of vessel speed and power performance. It also provides for the selection of suitable propulsion system components – engines, gears and propellers. A recent development effort has been undertaken to provide new submarine and SWATH performance analysis in NavCad. This includes new definitions for submerged hull form geometry, and the prediction of resistance and hull-propulsor interaction coefficients. The definition…

Sea Trial Performance Analysis Redefined

KND Naval Design of Cape Town, South Africa successfully completed its first in class 10M Advanced Life Support Ambulance and Rescue vessel for Africa. This vessel was designed and built entirely in Cape Town. This project used HydroComp propulsion software to analyze and examine sea trial performance. Naval architect Kobus Potgieter captured a USA styled 1960’s retro ambulance look-and-feel for the boat. He also used “Batmobile” oversized fenders and flowing lines which can be seen in the vessel’s coach and shape of the hull.

SNAME Announces Pre-Meeting Training Courses

The Society of Naval Architects and Engineers (SNAME) has scheduled six pre-meeting training courses to run in the days immediately prior to the SNAME 2013 Annual Meeting and Expo, November 6-8 at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue in Bellevue, Washington. Early registration discounts of up to $200 are available until October 14. This opportunity is offered to companies who regularly provide training courses to Naval Architects, Marine and Ocean Engineers. Don't miss this one-day training course for active users of NavCad, HydroComp’s software for ship resistance and propulsion. The focus of the course will be to introduce and review "best practices" for experienced and novice users of NavCad. For more information, contact HydroComp, Inc.

HydroComp NavCad is software for resistance and propulsion that can be found in the toolbox of naval architects and marine professions from around the world. First introduced in 1988, NavCad has undergone numerous upgrades in its 25-year history, but HydroComp says none of the previous upgrades are more significant than those found in this newly released version of NavCad. More than just an upgrade for current users, the new NavCad establishes a framework for ongoing feature development and improvements in the user experience. The design for this framework was first sketched out in early 2010.

Contra-Rotating Propellors: New System Prediction Software

New features for the industry-standard resistance and propulsion software, HydroComp's NavCad. Many contemporary marine vehicles are being outfitted with contra-rotating propellers (CRP), and naval architects need the ability to model the performance of CRP systems – a capability that has been lacking until now. As part of its ongoing internal R&D program, HydroComp, Inc. has just deployed a new CRP system analysis module into HydroComp NavCad®, the industry-standard software for the prediction and analysis of vessel speed and power performance. Published comparisons of the efficiency between standard fixed-pitch propellers (FPP) and CRP propellers typically indicate that CRPs are between 3% and 10% more efficient.

PropElements is a new software product from HydroComp for detail propeller design and analysis. Propeller specialists will find it an essential addition to their propeller design toolbox, but it also was developed to elegantly address the system-level hydrodynamic needs of naval architects, as well. Useful for both design and analysis, PropElements provides the ability to uniquely capture the performance of a particular propeller on a particular vessel. Users can prepare a noise-sensitive wake-adapted propeller design for a vessel, for example. Or analyze the behavior of an existing propeller.
