Interview: Tore Morten Olsen, President Maritime, Marlink

“When the human element is considered, securing networks from cyber-attack is incredibly challenging. Reducing human interaction with on board networks and computers by deploying a more standardized IT environment can minimize risks.”
-- Tore Morten Olsen, President Maritime, Marlink

Tore Morten Olsen, President Maritime, Marlink, discusses the pace and direction of high speed comms in maritime.Using metrics of your choice, put in perspective where we are today in terms of getting shipowners to adopt high speed communication solutions. The term broadband has been used in the maritime industry for at least a decade and if we are to follow the FCC’s definition which was upgraded to 25mbps from 4mbps (download) in 2015, then those high speed internet services are nothing of the sort. However, everything is relative.

AVEVA, DNV GL's Sesam Integration Cuts Cost

Integration of Aveva and DNV GL's Sesam Reduces Costs in Maritime and Offshore Engineering. Engineers designing ship hulls and offshore floaters can now save time and money in the early design phase due to a breakthrough allowing transfer of 3D models from AVEVA Marine to Sesam GeniE, the two leading design and engineering software systems in the maritime and offshore market. The new functionality, initiated by AVEVA to respond to the demand of the market, allows users to transfer AVEVA hull models into DNV GL’s Sesam GeniE for strength assessment and code check according to DNV GL Rules. Now users can significantly reduce the time and effort spent in early design of ship hulls and offshore floaters…

Design’s Future 3D Modeling, Virtual Reality Wave of Design Future

CAD/CAM software can be used to analyze various sections of a vessel. (Image: SSI)

Rooted in early computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing applications, design and construction software is firmly at the helm of most shipyards today, enabling the production of  better designed, more efficient and consistently built ships produced with measurably less waste: less waste of time, materials, man hours and most important, money. The ROI can be substantial, and is traceable throughout the entire process, across all sub sectors such as project management, purchasing, materials, labor and build sequencing.

Russia’s VolgodgradNIPImorneft Institute Implements AVEVA Marine

AVEVA (LSE:AVV), announced today that VolgogradNIPImorneft has implemented AVEVA Marine for jack-up platform projects in the Caspian Sea. In addition to the AVEVA software, the contract includes a full range of services for implementation and training. VolgodgradNIPImorneft Institute works on complex projects so selected a 3D engineering design solution that met the needs of a marine environment as well as specific design standards such as detailed piping design. They were using two divergent systems which were very inefficient and access for all project designers to work on the same model was a huge challenge. AVEVA Marine effectively addresses these issues.
