US Shoots Down Missile Fired by Houthis Toward Red Sea

Iranian-backed Houthi militants fired one anti-ship cruise missile from Yemen toward the Red Sea on Tuesday, the U.S. military's Central Command said, adding that a U.S. destroyer in the area shot it down.No injuries or damage were reported, the Central Command said.(Reuters - Reporting by Jasper Ward; editing by Rami Ayyub)

US, UK Forces Shoot Down Houthi Missiles, Drones Targeting Ships in Red Sea

U.S. and UK forces shot down 21 drones and missiles fired by Yemen-based Houthis on Tuesday into the Southern Red Sea towards international shipping lanes, the U.S. military's Central Command said.U.S. Central Command said there were no injuries or damage reported, adding that this was the 26th Houthi attack on commercial shipping lanes in the Red Sea since Nov. 19.Iranian-backed Houthi militants have stepped up attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea in protest against Israel's war in Gaza.

Dutch firms Sensing360 and Damen Shipyards have teamed up to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of ships through advanced sensor technology. Sensing360 specializes in sensor technology based on photonics — the interaction between light and electronics. "The collaboration with Damen means we can now also deploy this technology — which we already use extensively in wind turbines — onboard ships. For example, we are looking at deploying them in winches and other rotating parts," said Georgo Angelis, Sensing360's CEO.

ABS Examines Alternative Fuels in Reports for EMSA

Keppel Terminates Semi-sub Rig, Jack-up Rig, and Liftboat Orders as Clients Fail to Pay Up

Singapore-based shipbuilder Keppel has terminated three construction contracts signed years ago, citing clients' failure to pay up. The terminated contracts are related to orders made by TS Offshore, Sapura Energy, and Crystal Heights. TS Offshore, in March 2014, ordered a 500 feet water depth N Plus jack-up rig, worth about US$500 million (“TS Jasper Vessel”). In January 2014, Keppel also secured an order for the Sapura Raiqa Semi-Submersible Self-Erecting TAD Rig, and in July 2015, Crystal Heights ordered a high-specification liftboat worth around $85 million.

Sovcomflot's Tankers Find Refuge in the Bahamas Amid Growing Sanctions

At least three tankers controlled by Russian maritime powerhouse Sovcomflot that have been unable to deliver their cargoes due to Western sanctions have re-routed to the Bahamas, vessel tracking data showed on Monday.Russian state-owned Sovcomflot was blacklisted by the United States last month over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Australia Bans Another Bulker Over Unpaid Wages

A Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier has been banned from Australian ports for six months over the operation of several sets of wage accounts and multiple conflicting seafarer employment agreements, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.The Unison Jasper has remained alongside in the Port of Newcastle, under detention, since July 25, 2020 for the Maritime Labor Convention breaches. AMSA said it also found insufficient quantity and variety of food on board and an ineffective complaints procedure.On July 31, 11 crew members left ship and entered into quarantine arrangements in Sydney so they could be repatriated to their own country.The ship has remained under detention in Newcastle because there were not enough crew onboard to sail the ship safely.

GasLog Relocates People and Office

Monaco-based international owner, operator and manager of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers GasLog has announced plans to relocate more of its people and most of the senior management to the Piraeus, Greece office, home of its operational platform.As a result, GasLog will close the Monaco office, whilst the London office will focus primarily on chartering activities and company secretarial duties. The offices in Singapore, Korea and the US will be unaffected by the changes.GasLog CEO, Paul Wogan, and  COO, Paolo Enoizi, are already located in Greece along with other members of the senior management team.The CFO, Alastair Maxwell, and Head of Commercial, Jasper Heikens, will relocate to Greece in early January 2020.

Offshore Test of New Installation Technology Successful

The Carbon Trust and Fistuca, in conjunction with industry partners announced the successful completion of the offshore trial of the Fistuca BLUE 25M hammer as part of the Offshore Wind Accelerator BLUE PILOT project.The industry partners include E.ON, EDPR,  EnBW, Equinor, Ørsted, Shell, Sif, SSE, Van Oord, and Vattenfall. The offshore test was carried out on August 13, 2018, using Van Oord’s offshore heavy lift installation vessel, Svanen, off the coast of the Netherlands.The BLUE Hammer is an innovative, new hammer utilizing a large water tank to provide a more energetic, but quieter blow for offshore installation. It is designed to reduce underwater noise levels by up to 20 dB (SEL), and is predicted to reduce the fatigue damage during installation on the pile by up to 90 percent.

Jasper de Wit joined the company in 2005. In his last role he was responsible for Corporate Controlling. Jasper succeeds Nynke Dalstra who was appointed CFO in November 2016. The International Windship Association (IWSA) has announced the shortlist, selected by shipping industry experts, for the inaugural Wind Propulsion Innovation Awards 2016 and voting is now open to everyone to select the winners in three categories – Innovation, Technology User and Research. The Lifetime Achievement Award is a closed vote for IWSA members. The Awards will be presented at a ceremony at the SMM2016 on 8th September 2016 in Hamburg. The Wind Propulsion Innovation Awards were launched by IWSA to recognise pioneering projects and technological innovation in the development of wind propulsion for technically and commercially viable solutions for different vessels across the maritime industry.

Maersk Working to Tow Safmarine Meru to Safety

Maersk Line said it is working with Chinese authorities to develop a plan to tow its severely damaged containership Safmarine Meru to safety. On May 7, the Maersk-owed Safmarine Meru was heavily damaged and caught fire after colliding with the German-owned containership Northen Jasper approximately 120 nautical miles east of Ningbo, China. According to Maersk, the fire is under control and external firefighting has concluded with fire tugs remaining nearby to observe any developments.

Two Massive Container Ships Collide

Maersk Line's 292-meter (958-foot) Safmarine Meru and  the 318-meter (1,043-foot) Northern Jasper operated by Germany’s  Norddeutsche Reederei H. Schuldt GmbH & Co collided off the coast of China late Saturday with one catching fire, but the crews of both vessels are safe. The collision took place in opens seas 138 miles east of the Chinese port of Ningbo, south of Shanghai. “The collision caused severe damage to the Safmarine Meru and a fire broke out. The Safmarine Meru’s crew of 22 people abandoned the vessel shortly after,” Maersk Line said. Firefighting was initiated Sunday morning local time. While there is no visible fire, there is smoke and firefighting continues. The Chinese authorities are on the scene and Maersk Line is cooperating with same,” Maersk Line said.

Jasper Ocean Terminal Budget Approved

The Jasper Ocean Terminal (JOT) board of directors met earlier this week to solidify a budget and work plan for FY2016 as well as review work completed during the 2015 fiscal year. The board approved a 2016 fiscal year budget that includes accomplishing further studies of the site design, sediment, access corridor and channel improvements necessary for the largest containerships, as well as efforts to recruit a third party required for completion of an environmental impact study. Cosponsors Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) and SC Ports Authority (SCPA) will each contribute $1.25 million to the FY2016 budget. “This was a watershed meeting for our board,” said board chairman David Posek.

SC Ports Authority Reports Improved Financial Results

Today SC Ports Authority reported 2015 fiscal year-end operating earnings of $30.4 million and revenues of $196.8 million, significant increases over the previous year's financial performance. Update: Philippines Grounding Incidents

The Philippines Couast Guard issued an update on three recent grounding incidents near Central Visayas. The MV Subic Bay 1, which ran aground at Bantolinao Point, Cebu, arrived safely at Gothong Wharf, Cebu at 11:30 p.m. yesterday, November 16. Another vessel that also grounded at Bantolinao Point, The MV Joyful Star, is awaiting towing Coast Guard Station (CGS) Cebu is coordinating with the shipping company. All passengers from the vessel were safely transported to Porter Yacht Club in Liloan, Cebu, in good condition and assisted by a Jasper Roble, a representative of Roble Shipping Incorporated. A third vessel, Our Lady of All Nation, ran aground at Danajon Bank, Bohol. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing with personnel of to Coast Guard vessel BRP EDSA II (SARV-002).

SCPA Logs 10% 1Q Growth

South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) saw strong container volume growth during the first quarter of the 2016 fiscal year, with TEU volumes 9.5 percent higher than the same period last year. SCPA handled 167,549 TEUs last month, an 11.1 percent increase from September 2014 volumes. Since the 2016 fiscal year began in July, SCPA has moved 513,299 TEUs. As measured in pier containers, 289,610 boxes have moved across SCPA docks fiscal year to date. Pier container volume is up 8.6 percent from the 266,741 boxes handled during the same period last fiscal year. "Our growth is indicative of broad-based strength across all market segments," said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome.

Georgia, South Carolina Ports Advance Joint Venture

The Georgia and South Carolina Ports Authorities have signed a new joint venture agreement that provides framework for the two states to work cooperatively toward the development of the Jasper Ocean Terminal (JOT), which will be jointly owned and operated by both port authorities. The updated agreement governs the permitting and planning process for the JOT, including the development of terminal design and supporting infrastructure, plans for financing, and execution of the operational decisions required during the permitting process. The JOT Joint Project Office was first established under an intergovernmental agreement signed in 2008 by the previous Governors of Georgia and South Carolina. This new agreement takes effect immediately and continues the work of the JOT.
