Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) has awarded Ottawa-based Lockheed Martin Canada (Lockheed Martin), a contract for work on Canada’s new Joint Support Ships (JSS).At $118M, this is the largest contract package that Seaspan will award for work on the JSS, said a press release.Lockheed Martin is one of several major systems integrators that Seaspan is working with in order to meet its commitments under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).Seaspan and Lockheed Martin have an established relationship as partners on several programs for the Royal Canadian Navy and, more recently, the Royal New Zealand Navy, in maintaining and upgrading vital military assets.Lockheed Martin will provide a state of the art Command Management System based around the CMS 330 for the JSS.

The Canadian government on Friday said Lockheed Martin Corp would be given first chance to bid on a contract to design 15 warships that will end up costing Canada around C$60 billion ($46 billion).The ministries of procurement and defense said Ottawa and Irving Shipbuilding, a Canadian firm which will actually build the vessels, had identified Lockheed Martin Canada as the "preferred bidder to provide the design and design team."The ministries said in a joint statement that Lockheed Martin would have to go through a due diligence process before a contract was awarded later this year.

Seaspan’s Victoria Shipyards (VSL) celebrated the handover of Her Majesty’s New Zealand Ship (HMNZS) Te Kaha at a ceremony in Victoria, BC. The handover ceremony marks the transfer of care of HMNZS Te Kaha from the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) to Lockheed Martin Canada (NYSE:LMT) and VSL. Today’s event follows last month’s formal announcement that VSL had been awarded work on the Frigate Systems Upgrade for the RNZN’s ANZAC class frigates as a subcontractor for Lockheed Martin Canada. “Being awarded this project demonstrates Seaspan’s Victoria Shipyards’ capabilities as a leader in ship repair in North America,” said Brian Carter, President & CEO of Seaspan Shipyards.

Lockheed Martin Canada has signed a formal contract with the New Zealand government for ship installation and trials to complete the upgrade and modernization of the ANZAC class frigates. The first of two frigates, Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship (HMNZS) TE KAHA arrived in Victoria yesterday. Lockheed Martin Canada is responsible for designing and supplying the upgraded combat system for each ANZAC Class Frigate, including a new combat management system – based on Lockheed Martin Canada's Combat Management System 330 – along with the supply and integration of various sensors, a missile system and a Combat Systems Trainer. Rolls-Royce Canada said it has won a contract with BAE Systems for its mission bay handling technology for the U.K. Royal Navy’s new Type 26 Global Combat Ship. German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has completed factory acceptance tests and delivery of 12 sets of navigation radars for the Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class frigates. The Industrial Marine Training and Applied Research Centre (IMTARC) located in Esquimalt, BC, is officially opened. The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic persification (WD), joined provincial and local representatives to officially open the Industrial Marine Training and Applied Research Centre (IMTARC). "We recognize that the shipbuilding and marine industry in British Columbia is set to grow significantly in the coming years and that this coordinated training centre will play an integral part in positioning BC for success," said Minister Yelich. Total economic activity in BC’s shipbuilding industry is expected to grow from $450 million to $1.4 billion, with the number of jobs increasing from 3,000 to 5,000.

Irving Shipbuilding’s successful C$25 billion bid for the combatant portion of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) illustrates the strength of Nova Scotia shipbuilding industry. Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ:ESLT) announced that its subsidiary, Elisra Electronic Systems Ltd. (Elisra), was awarded a contract by Lockheed Martin Canada Ltd valued at approximately $55m to supply Electronic Warfare (EW) equipment for the Canadian Navy's Halifax Frigate Modernization program. Elisra's systems were selected after meeting the strict standards and challenges required by the customer.
