Medcenter Container Terminal Orders 12 Straddle Carriers from Kalmar

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order of 12 diesel-electric straddle carriers from Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT) in Italy.Located in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, MCT,  owned and operated by Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), is a mega port able to handle the largest container vessels deployed on Asia-Mediterranean routes.The terminal has handled more than 56 million TEUs since it opened in September 1995. In January 2020, Kalmar delivered the 200th Kalmar straddle carrier to the terminal.

MCT Completes 1st Year of Operations

Kalmar Delivers MCT 200th Straddle Carrier

Costa Rica Begins New Direct Shanghai Service

In just six months since the inauguration of the new Moín Container Terminal (MCT) in Costa Rica, highly-trained employees are meeting all productivity KPIs outlined in the concession contract.By reducing berthing times to an average of just 10 hours per vessel, the Terminal has been able to create an additional berthing window for a new direct service to Shanghai, China.The first ship on this new commercial route arrived from Houston on Sunday, 22 September, leaving on Monday laden with Costa Rican pineapples, bananas, meat and orange juice. Italian Terminal Orders Kalmar Straddle Carriers

Medcenter Container Terminal SpA (MCT), which operates a major transshipment hub for the Mediterranean region, has placed an order for 32 diesel-electric straddle carriers. The delivery of all machines scheduled to be completed by the end of Q4 2019. MCT is located in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, a mega-port able to handle the largest vessels deployed on the Asia-Mediterranean routes.The terminal has handled more than 50 million TEU since it began operations in September 1995, with an annual handling capacity of 4.2 million TEU. In total, Kalmar has delivered 164 straddle carriers to MCT since the terminal was opened. Contship Italia Sells Gioia Tauro

Contship Italia SpA has sold its 50 percent share in the southern Italian port of Gioia Tauro, which includes the Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT).A press release said: "Contship, a fully controlled subsidiary of Terminal Investment Ltd (TIL) have executed a share purchase agreement concerning the sale of 50% of CSM Italia Gate S.p.A., the company which owns 100% of MCT."MCT is the concessionaire of the container terminal activities in the port of Gioia Tauro and TIL already owned 50% of CSM Italia Gate S.p.A.The parties involved are not disclosing terms. Regulatory approvals are still pending.At closing, TIL will own 100% of CSM Italia Gate S.p.A. and will indirectly control all the shares of MCT.Contship Italia S.p.A.

Costa Rica Grants Green Light to Moín Terminal

APM Terminals’ Moín Container Terminal (MCT) in Costa Rica has been granted permission by the National Council of Concessions (CNC) to start commercial operations at its first deep-sea berth. This is a key step for the terminal, which is on schedule to be fully operational in February 2019.The permit, which is subject to meeting all safety and service requirements, will enable the transfer of all commercial container ships currently serviced at Puerto Limón and Puerto Moín to the MCT. This will take place once APM Terminals delivers the dock´s first phase, which includes two berths and 40 hectares of artificial island due in February 2019.

Contship Italia Volumes rise

Contship Italia Group, Italy’s leading maritime container terminal and intermodal operator saw an increase in handled volume of 1.7% and 9.7% increase in transported volumes for 2016. The group’s Maritime Container Terminal business saw an increase of 109,000 TEUs in overall handling volumes in 2016, welcoming 6,888 vessel calls, up 4% year on year. Contship’s intermodal business reported an overall rise in transported volumes and directly operated number of trains. Innovative fast customs corridors, an improved load factor of domestic trains in the second half of the year, plus the increased routing of cargo via the southern gateway to south and central Europe, have all supported an increased market share of 25% in the Italian maritime intermodal business.

Eastern Launches MPSV for Harvey Gulf

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. has launched M/V Harvey Blue-Sea (Hull 250) on April 29, 2016 for Harvey Gulf International Marine, Inc. of New Orleans, La. The Harvey Blue-Sea is the second of two 340’ Class Multi-Purpose Service Vessels (MPSV), designed by VARD Marine. The launching event was held at Eastern’s Allanton facility with hundreds of Eastern employees, several representatives from Harvey Gulf and guests in attendance. Father Roy Marien of Saint John’s Catholic Church of Panama City, Florida, performed the blessing of the vessel.

EUROGATE Net Profit Up 13%

EUROGATE can look back on a good financial year, 2015. Despite difficult market conditions the European terminal operators Group increased its net profit by 13.4 percent to EUR 73.5 million (prior year EUR 64.9 million). Container handling at the German EUROGATE locations grew faster than the market. In Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven and Hamburg EUROGATE 2015 hit with 8.2 million standard containers (TEU) 1.5 percent more boxes in order as 2014. The entire North Range ports recorded in the same period dropped by 1.6 percent. The total amount of the turned-up in the European group_container totaled 14.5 million TEU two percent on the previous year and corresponded to the market development: The total throughput of European ports 2015 was also increased by two percent rückläufig1.

Consistent Growth from Contship Italia Group

Continuing support from key markets across Asia helped Contship Italia Group, the leading container terminal and intermodal transport operator in Italy, to report a steady set of results for 2015. Contship Italia Group terminals handled a total of 6.3 million TEUs last year on the back of increased volumes at La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT), its main gateway for Asian cargo. LSCT, with four weekly calls from China, the Far East, and South East Asia, continues the positive trend that has seen Asia trade via La Spezia increase by 3.5% on the previous year (up 19% over the past five years). In 2015, 197 of 938 total calls at LSCT were associated with Asia services offered by the 2M, O3 and CKYHE alliances handling vessels in the 10,000-14,000 TEU capacity range.

Huawei Bags MCT Submarine Cable Contract

Huawei Marine has signed a system design and construction agreement with a consortium comprising Telekom Malaysia Berhad, Symphony Communication and Telcotech to build the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand (MCT) submarine cable system. Spanning approximately 1,300 km, the MCT cable system will provide connectivity between Cherating in Malaysia and Rayong in Thailand with a branching unit connecting from the main trunk into Sihanoukville in Cambodia. Access to neighboring counties such as Laos and Myanmar will be achieved through further connection to terrestrial based networks. The MCT cable system adopts the 100G technology with a total design capacity exceeding 30 Tbps. The system will be commissioned and ready for commercial service by the end of 2016.

USCG Medevacs Man From Sailboat off NC Coast

The Coast Guard medevaced an injured 62-year-old man from his sailboat Thursday approximately 100 miles east of Kill Devil Hills. Watchstanders at the Fifth Coast Guard District command center in Portsmouth, Virginia, received notification at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from the International Emergency Response Coordination Center, reporting they received a distress message from the sailboat Austina. The report stated the boat operator fell, injured his hip and was in need of medical assistance. Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the crew of the MCT Matterhorn to assist. The MCT Matterhorn is registered with the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System.

Port of Rotterdam Takes Steps to Stop Delays

The Port of Rotterdam is taking measures to eliminate congestion at the ECT Delta Terminal and the Euromax Terminal. Inland waterway vessels and feeder vessels have been experiencing delays at these terminals for some time. Improvements implemented at these terminals have not had the desired effect up until now. The inconvenience experienced by the port's customers and users is of such magnitude that the Port of Rotterdam Authority has taken the initiative of developing solutions to this problem. It became clear that all parties involved wanted to cooperate in order to improve the situation. Three potential measures were identified pursuant to meetings with ECT, LINC (inland container shipping sector), Uniport Terminal and the Kramer Group/RCT.

Kalmar Delivers 10 Straddle Carriers to MCT

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has gained an order to supply ten electric straddle carriers to its long standing customer Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), part of the Contship Italia Group, in Gioia Tauro, Italy. The order was booked into Kalmar's second quarter order intake with deliveries scheduled for November 2014. The latest order sees Kalmar strengthen an already long standing relationship with MCT. Currently handling an annual 3 million TEUs, the transshipment hub continues to grow and is now considered to be the "Mega Hub "in the South Europe region, with both global reach to all major markets and regional connections on a weekly basis with over 60 ports throughout the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian, Aegean and Black Sea.

Marine Current Turbines Wins Prestigious International Award

Marine Current Turbines, the UK tidal energy technology company, has won EnergyOcean International’s 2011 Technology Pioneer Award for successfully demonstrating and running their commercial-scale SeaGen tidal technology. The award will be received by Martin Wright, Chief Executive of Marine Current Turbines (MCT), at the EnergyOcean International 2011 Conference in Portland, Maine, USA next month (June 15th). The 1.2MW SeaGen, located in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough, is the only tidal current turbine anywhere in the world to feed power regularly into a local electricity grid on a commercial basis. It has been operating since 2008 and has the capacity to generate electricity for the equivalent of 1500 homes.

Tritech Launches Mammal Detection System

Tritech expands its industry-standard sonar range with a key renewables device, launching its Gemini SeaTec Mammal Detection System at the All-Energy show in Aberdeen, UK. Gemini SeaTec is a mammal detection system which provides a valuable tool in the detection of marine life around subsea turbines. Tritech’s subsea sonars have been deployed on marine current structures since 2008 when the company made its first step into the offshore renewables sector. Tritech has now developed its real-time multibeam imaging sonar technology for this market.

Asset Deal: Palfinger Dreggen and MCT Engineering

Palfinger Dreggen finalized the agreement for purchase of the assets in connection with the marine and offshore cranes product areas of the Korean crane manufacturer MCT Engineering Co., Ltd. The acquisition follows Palfinger Marine’s takeover of the Norwegian offshore crane manufacturer and is designed to help expand and intensify the partnership between both companies, which stretches back many years. “With the acquisition of Dreggen in the fourth quarter of 2012, we took a significant growth step for our Business Area Marine. Together, we managed to obtain the largest order in the history of Palfinger in early 2013. It comprises, to be precise, two orders with a total value of approximately €90 million, which we are going to fill in the years to come.

Siemens Ups Stake in Offshore Renewables

British tidal energy company, Marine Current Turbines Ltd, announced that Siemens is increasing its share in the company to 45%. “With this increase in its stake, Siemens is strengthening its activities in ocean power generation. We will actively shape the commercialization process of innovative marine current power plants,” said Michael Axmann, CFO of the newly founded Solar & Hydro Division within Siemens’ Energy Sector. Marine Current Turbines (MCT) has evolved from a pioneer to a technology leader in horizontal axis marine current turbines and now has 25 employees. In February 2010 Siemens acquired a minor stake in the Bristol-based company and thus entered the marine tidal current market. Financial details of today’s announcement are not disclosed.
