Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has gained an order to supply ten electric straddle carriers to its long standing customer Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), part of the Contship Italia Group, in Gioia Tauro, Italy. The order was booked into Kalmar's second quarter order intake with deliveries scheduled for November 2014.

The latest order sees Kalmar strengthen an already long standing relationship with MCT. Currently handling an annual 3 million TEUs, the transshipment hub continues to grow and is now considered to be the "Mega Hub "in the South Europe region, with both global reach to all major markets and regional connections on a weekly basis with over 60 ports throughout the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian, Aegean and Black Sea.

Kalmar's latest electric straddle carrier models offer high performance, excellent fuel efficiency and low noise level. The machines to be delivered comply with the latest exhaust emission regulations whilst also improving fuel efficiency by up to 20% over previous models and reducing running costs overall. The 3-high straddle carriers have the capacity of 40 tons.

Domenico Bagalá, Managing Director at MCT, said: "Kalmar consistently delivers a solution that precisely meets our needs. Their straddle carriers are exceptionally high quality, providing us with proven reliability and productivity, that's why our straddle carrier fleet is predominantly supplied by Kalmar. Having said that, owning and operating costs are now a critical factor in the selection process, given the challenges represented by the current unstable economic environment.

In this respect, Kalmar's latest electric machines clearly make a significant contribution to lowering fuel costs and boosting productivity.

"Kalmar Italia provides excellent after sales support, with dedicated engineers available when we need them. The quality of their sales and service personnel is another key reason why we have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship", he added.
