Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine have laid the keel of a new littoral combat ship to commence the vessel’s construction.The future USS Nantucket, or LCS 27, underwent a keel-laying ceremony in Wisconsin where Polly Spencer, the ship’s sponsor, had her initials welded on the vessel’s keel plate, Lockheed said.As part of a ship-building tradition dating back centuries, a shipyard worker welded the initials of Polly Spencer, USS Nantucket ship sponsor and wife of U.S. Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer, into the ship's keel plate.

Ulstein Verft has signed a shipbuilding contract with the Germany-based Bernhard Schulte for a service operation vessel (SOVs) of the ULSTEIN SX195 design type developed by Ulstein Design & Solutions. The vessel will support the maintenance work of GE Renewable Energy at the German wind farm Merkur Offshore.The project has been developed in cooperation with WINDEA Offshore, which is the Bernhard Schulte's affiliate for offshore wind projects."Ulstein Verft is a very reliable yard and we are eager to start working together with ULSTEIN again.
C-Job Designs Wind-assisted Flettner Freighter
C-Job Naval Architects has delivered the design for a wind-assisted general cargo vessel to Dutch shipping company Switijnk Shipping. The 8,500 DWT vessel will be equipped with two Norsepower Rotor Sails that will supplement the main engines and is expected to achieve fuel savings of approximately 14 per cent. C-Job was approached by Switijnk Shipping following its involvement in the European Union Interreg project S@IL, for which C-Job developed the earlier design of a 4,500 DWT Flettner Freighter. C-Job designed this smaller vessel with four Rotor Sails.

Likewise, many designs winning over owners and explorers target exotic Asia-Pacific destinations. Competition is fierce among “designer-shipyards” seeking to build their designs, but their creations could face fewer hurdles to construction than the designs of independents without a yard. Concepts bound for the slipway have something else in common: new davits for large numbers of water craft.
Royal IHC Buys Into Rotterdam Offshore Group
Royal IHC has announced its acquisition of 50% of the share capital of Rotterdam Offshore Group (ROG). The agreement will enable IHC to strengthen its ship repair and conversion capabilities with the addition of a dedicated facility in Rotterdam, which has uninterrupted access to open sea. Rotterdam Offshore Group has a strong reputation in the worldwide maritime and offshore industry for dockside and on-site services. Located in Rotterdam, ROG has lay-by facilities for vessels up to 300m, heavy-lift crane capacity, a large yard area and a fully equipped workshop.
USNS Comfort Departs for Puerto Rico

The U.S. Navy has awarded contracts worth nearly $1.4 billion to buy four more Littoral Combat Ships from Lockheed Martin Corp and Australia's Austal Ltd, the U.S. Defense Department said on Monday. Ulstein subsidiary, Ulstein Idea Equipment Solutions, complete delivery, installation & testing of two pile gripper frames (PGF) for the Offshore Wind Force JV. The PGF’s will be used by DONG Energy West of Duddon Sands (UK) Limited and Scottish Power Renewables (WODS) Limited for the installation of mono-pile foundations in the West of Duddon Sands Offshore Windfarm offshore UK. IHC Merwede Reveals Healthy Profit Margin
IHC Merwede has revealed a healthy net profit margin of 4.1% in 2012 and a positive sales forecast for the year ahead. The company develops and builds vessels, equipment and life-cycle support services for the dredging, mining and offshore industries, which have been performing well – despite the global economic situation and the knock-on effect for the maritime industry. In 2012, IHC Merwede reached a revenue of €895 million and a net profit of €37 million. After the exceptional years of 2010 and 2011, the revenue and profitability were lower last year.
