With the delivery of Palmetto State to American Petroleum Tankers (APT), San Diego shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has now handed over the final ECO Class tanker constructed as part of an eight-tanker, dual-customer program. Palmetto State, delivered June 7 during a signing ceremony at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, is the final vessel in a series of eight liquefied natural gas (LNG)-conversion-ready product tankers ordered by two companies, APT and SEA-Vista, LLC, in 2013.

U.S. shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has delivered the third and final ship for SEA-Vista LLC as part of the builder’s larger eight-ship ECO Class tanker program. The LNG-conversion-ready Jones Act tanker Liberty was delivered on March 1, and is the last of three 610-foot-long, 50,000 deadweight-ton product carriers ordered by SEA-Vista in 2013. The construction program began in November 2014, and the first two ships, Independence and Constitution, have been delivered and are servicing the Jones Act trade. Each of the three ECO Class tankers features 330,000 barrel cargo capacity.

On November 8, 2016, shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the American Jones Act-qualified ECO Class tanker Constitution to SEA-Vista LLC. The ship was delivered during a signing ceremony at the builder’s shipyard in San Diego. Construction on Constitution began in June 2015, and the vessel was christened and launched on August 27, 2016. Constitution was built for SEA-Vista, a partnership between SEACOR Holdings Inc. (CKH) and Avista Capital Partners, and will be operated by Seabulk Tankers, Inc.

Marking its seventh ship delivery in the span of just over a year, General Dynamics NASSCO has delivered the newly built ECO Class tanker Garden State for American Petroleum Tankers. Garden State was delivered during a special signing ceremony and is one of three classes of ships delivered by the San Diego-based shipyard since June of last year. “In the past year, NASSCO shipbuilders have delivered seven ships – or the equivalent to 100,000 tons worth of steel,” said Kevin Graney, vice president and general manager for General Dynamics NASSCO.

On Thursday, May 19, shipbuilders at General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the Magnolia State to longtime customer American Petroleum Tankers (APT). The ECO Class tanker is one of the most fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly tankers in the world and symbolizes the emerging future of green shipping. It is also the fifth ship NASSCO shipbuilders have delivered in the past eight months. The Magnolia State is the second of a five-tanker contract between NASSCO and APT, which calls for the design and construction of five 50,000 deadweight ton, LNG-conversion-ready product carriers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. The 610-foot-long tankers are equipped with a new “ECO” design, which provides a 33 percent fuel efficiency improvement compared to product tankers built only a few years ago.

On Thursday, April 28, 2016, General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the first ship in a series of three ECO Class tankers currently under construction for SEA-Vista LLC. The newly-built Independence is a 610-foot, 50,000 deadweight-ton, LNG-conversion-ready product tanker with a 330,000 barrel capacity. Designed by DSEC—a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Busan, South Korea—the ship design incorporates improved fuel efficiency concepts through several features, including a G-series MAN Diesel & Turbo ME slow-speed main engine and an optimized hull form.

General Dynamics NASSCO, today, delivered the company's first ECO Class tanker, the Lone Star State, to American Petroleum Tankers (APT). The new ECO Class tanker symbolizes the emerging direction of the shipping industry in the U.S. toward cleaner, more fuel-efficient modes of transporting product. The tanker is the first of a five-tanker contract between NASSCO and APT, which calls for the design and construction of five 50,000 deadweight-ton, LNG-conversion-ready product tankers with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. The 610-foot-long tankers are a new "ECO" design, offering significantly improved fuel efficiency and the latest environmental protection features including a Ballast Water Treatment System.

Shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the U.S. Navy’s newest ship, the USNS Lewis B. Puller (MLP 3 AFSB) on Friday, June 12. The ship is named in honor of the late U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Lewis “Chesty” Puller, the most decorated Marine and the only one to be awarded five Navy Crosses. The AFSB modifications add a 52,000 square-foot flight deck, fuel and equipment storage, repair spaces, magazines, mission planning spaces and accommodations for up to 250 personnel.

General Dynamics National Steel & Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO) christened the USNS Lewis B. Puller (MLP 3 AFSB) in early February in San Diego. USNS Lewis B. Puller, the third vessel of the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) class, is the first of which to be configured as an Afloat Forward Staging Base (AFSB). While the Lewis B. Puller is the third in the series, in some respects it has lead ship qualities as it is designated MLP 3 / AFSB, the first to be equipped with a flight deck, a hangar and accommodations for about 250 people.

General Dynamics NASSCO today delivered the USNS John Glenn (MLP 2), the second ship of the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) class, to the U.S. Navy. The ship is named after the Honorable John Glenn for his exceptional and decorated service as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot, astronaut and U.S. Senator. Construction of the USNS John Glenn began in April 2012. Throughout the MLP program, NASSCO has incorporated more than 10,000 improvement ideas into its operations which contributed to controlling costs and delivering the MLP 2 on schedule with no open discrepancies.

General Dynamics NASSCO recently delivered USNS Montford Point (MLP-1), the lead ship of the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) class, to the U.S. Navy. The ship is named in honor of Camp Montford Point, the Jacksonville, N.C., site where the first African-American Marines were trained. Construction of the USNS Montford Point began in May 2011, incorporating a “design-build” approach to improve the ship’s readiness for production. The 785-foot-long auxiliary ship will serve as a floating base for amphibious operations, and operate as a transfer point between large ships and small landing craft. “Congratulations to the NASSCO-Navy-MSC team and to the entire group who built this ship,” said Fred Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO.

General Dynamics NASSCO delivers 'USNS Cesar Chavez' (T-AKE 14) to the U.S. Navy. USNS Cesar Chavez is the fourteenth and final ship of the T-AKE class of dry cargo-ammunition ships built by General Dynamics NASSCO for the U.S. Navy. NASSCO began constructing the 689-foot-long ship in October 2010, incorporating international marine technologies and commercial ship-design features, to minimize operating costs over its projected 40-year service life. With a 79.2-percent ship-over-ship learning curve, the T-AKE Program is among the most efficient shipbuilding programs in the United States.

Today General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), delivered the fifth ship of its State-class product carriers to American Petroleum Tankers, LLC, a joint venture of the Blackstone Group. The ship is named Evergreen State, in honor of the state of Washington. A christening ceremony for Evergreen State (Hull 505) was held to commemorate the ship’s entrance into the U.S. Fleet. The ship’s sponsor was Carol Kurz, wife of American Petroleum Tankers’ Chief Executive Officer Robert Kurz. Carol Kurz broke the traditional bottle of champagne across the ship’s side in front of an audience of about 200 who had gathered at the shipyard to witness the ceremony.

On July 13, General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), delivered the fourth ship of its State-class product carriers to American Petroleum Tankers, LLC, a joint venture of the Blackstone Financial Group.  The ship is named Empire State, the state nickname of New York. NASSCO began constructing the Empire State in January 2009.  At a length of 600.4 ft, the double-hulled ship has a cargo capacity of approximately 331,000 barrels.  The Empire State will be used initially to carry refined petroleum products for the Department of Defense under a commercial charter.

Perry (1794-1858), the U.S. Navy officer who established American trade with Japan in the mid-19th Century. NASSCO began construction of USNS Matthew Perry in April 2008. The 689-ft-long supply ship will serve under the Navy’s Military Sealift Command. The ship is capable of delivering almost 10,000 tons of dry cargo and petroleum products at one time to U.S. Navy and allied ships underway at sea. Including the Matthew Perry, NASSCO has delivered nine T-AKEs, which are also known as Lewis and Clark-class ships.
