EIB to Invest in Sustainable Transport

The European Investment Bank (EIB) approved a total of EUR 4.5 billion (USD 5bln) of new financing that will tackle investment gaps hindering private sector growth, including replacement of old buses and trains.The new EIB support will directly back projects in 23 countries, it said.The EIB agreed EUR 611 million of new financing to support energy transition, reduce carbon emissions and scale up renewable energy.This includes backing new solar power in Zambia and wind farms in Portugal…

The ferry business, unlike more industrial parts of the shipping business, touches wide swaths of the world’s population across continents. The membership of Interferry, the leading trade group for the industry, with non-Governmental organization (NGO) status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) includes 200+ members from all parts of the ferry spectrum. These include passenger ferries (including fast ferries), Ro/Pax and cruise ferries operating globally. In selecting “the best” we looked beyond the league tables of “the most” (passengers) and “the biggest” (fleet size).

Interferry Confirms Future Conference Locations

Interferry has confirmed locations for the 2021 and 2022 editions of its industry-leading annual conference – held every October - in the latest initiative to extend its reach as the only organization representing the worldwide ferry industry. The global trade association’s 46th annual conference will take place in Santander, Spain, followed in 2022 by a twin-venue event in Marrakesh and Tangier, Morocco, which will mark a first for Interferry on the African continent. Multi-award winner Brittany Ferries will host the Santander conference.

Acciona Gets DNV GL Certification

Acciona Energia, the biggest global operator exclusively in renewable energies,  received the first ever prototype certificate for a grid-scale energy storage solution by DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body. The handover of the certificate took place at the American Wind Energy Association’s 2018 Windpower Conference in Chicago. To explore the possibilities of grid-scale storage, Acciona Energia started up a hybrid plant for storing electricity in batteries as part of its grid-connected wind farm at Barasoain in Navarra, northern Spain.

Oliver Design to Showcase Projects at Navalia

Oliver Design will be showcasing some of its latest projects on its stand at the Navalia trade fair, which runs from May 22 to 24 , in Vigo, Spain.Recent projects from the Spanish firm, which specializes in naval design and architecture, include new state-of the-art vessels ranging from working vessels to luxury cruise ships. It has also carried out renovation on several existing vessels.The biannual Navalia is one of the top international fairs for the shipbuilding industry.

Spanish Police Bust Fishing Vessel Hauling Cocaine

Spanish police seized more than two tons of cocaine from a ship with a Venezuelan flag in the Atlantic Ocean and arrested the seven crew members, Spain's interior ministry said on Monday. The operation, carried out alongside the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the UK's National Crime Agency and Portuguese police, took place earlier this month, on May 4. The seven people on board were Venezuelan nationals, the ministry said, adding that a gun had also been seized alongside 2400 kg of cocaine. The vessel, a small, rusted fishing boat according to images distributed by police, has since been towed to Spain's Canary Islands. Separately…

First Vessel of New Rescue Class Launched

Global shipping and energy services firm, Craig Group, has launched its first F-Class vessel, the Grampian Fortress. The IMT 958 multi-role emergency response and rescue vessel (ERRV) was christened in the Balenciaga Shipyard in Northern Spain this week. She is the first of two F-class vessels in the group’s $171 million investment, which has already seen eight vessels delivered to Craig Group in the last two years. At 58 metres long, the Grampian Fortress features diesel electric propulsion via twin Azimuth Stern Drives.

ABC Diesel Gasses Ahead With Dual Fuel Ferry

A new ferry is under construction in northern Spain to serve the Dutch island of Texel. The vessel is powered by four main engines from Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) and split between two independent engine rooms, each of which can provide sufficient power to ensure normal service at least up to Beaufort 9 wind force. Two of the ABC engines are of diesel/CNG dual-fuel type, running at a maximum 1,000 rpm, and two are 750 rpm diesels, and each has a rated maximum output of just over 2,000 kW.

Double Order for Super Gloria Reachstacker

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has gained an order for two Super Gloria reachstackers from Tadarsa Logistics S.L. in Aviles, Spain. The largest reachstackers ever built, the Kalmar Gloria DRG1300-92ZX will have the capability of lifting 130 tonnes and will be utilised specifically to lift heavy wind turbine sections, which can weigh up to 260 tonnes. EU Backs Dover Strait Sea Connection

The EU's TEN-T Program will back with over $16.25million the improvement of the sea connection between Dover in The UK and Calais in France. The developments include better traffic management, berth enhancements and a new rail freight connection between Calais and southern France. The project will focus on innovative solutions to adapt and enhance the current transport infrastructure and improve the traffic management across the Strait of Dover. Launch of OCEAN FALCON in Pasajes

Zamakona Yards Group successfully completed the launch of the ship “Ocean Falcon” at its facilities in Pasajes (San Sebastian, northern Spain).

On November the 6th, Zamakona Yards Group successfully completed the launch of the ship “Ocean Falcon” at its facilities in Pasajes (San Sebastian, northern Spain). The ship is the third Zamakona Yards launches, of all three signed with the Norwegian shipping company Atlantic Offshore A.S. The primary mission of the ship is to provide prompt attention to emergencies on oil rigs, being specially adapted to the harsh conditions of the North Sea. It is there, where it will begin operations for the oil company SHELL in the second quarter of 2015.

Simplex-Turbulo to Represent Fujian Huadong Yard

Simplex-Turbulo Co. Ltd. announced that it now represents three drydocks: Jurong (Singapore), Astander (Northern Spain) and the newest addition Fujian Huadong (China). A new shipyard built in 2011, the Fujian Huadong shipyard is located on the northern side of Fujian Luoyuan Bay, a sheltered deep-water port in China. It’s centrally positioned on the eastern seaboard of China, equidistant from Shanghai and Guangzhou and northwest of Taiwan, well placed for many of the most popular Asian sea routes.

Zamakona Yards say they have successfully launched the 'Ocean Marilin' for owners Atlantic Offshore A.S. at their shipyard in Pasajes in Northern Spain. The shipbuilder explains that the principal mission of the vessel will be to provide immediate attention in emergency situations to offshore oil rigs and installations. Being especially adapted to the severe climatic conditions of the North Sea, it will commence operations for the Oil Company TOTAL in the second semester of 2014.

EU Funds LNG Bunkering Study

Studies on liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering infrastructure in Spain and France get EU grant. The European Union will support with just over €1 million from the TEN-T Programme a series of studies to analyse the potential introduction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure in Spain and France. The studies, selected for funding under the 2012 TEN-T Multi-Annual Call, aim at determining the feasibility of implementing LNG bunkering facilities in the Port of Roscoff (northwest France) and the Port of Santander (northern Spain).

Australian Warship Hull Departs Spain Aboard 'Blue Marlin'

The second and last of the Royal Australian Navy’s new amphibious ships has left the builder's yard, Navantia Ferrol shipyard, Vigo, in northern Spain, bound for Melbourne, informs the Australia Defence Force. “The Canberra-Class LHDs are the largest ships ever built for the Navy and will provide the Australian Defence Force with one of the most capable and sophisticated amphibious deployment capabilities in the world,” Defence Minister Senator David Johnston said. When completed the LHDs will be more than 230 metres long, 27.5 metres high and weigh around 27,500 tonnes.

New Ferry Service from West France to North Spain

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has welcomed a new ferry route into Ireland in a matter of weeks, after LD Ferries confirmed a weekly service from western France and northern Spain. The LD Ferries service will connect Rosslare with St Nazaire on the west coast of France, and with Gijón in northern Spain. “This is a very welcome announcement and provides a valuable new landbridge from France and Spain into Ireland. It’s the first service of its kind to Ireland, and it’s great news for our tourism industry. “This is the second positive announcement of a new ferry service in a matter of weeks. Last November a new route from Cherbourg to Dublin was announced.

Family owned shipping and energy services firm, Craig Group, announce the investment of £70million to build six new vessels at the Balenciaga Shipyard in Northern Spain. Four D class IMT 950 Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRVs) and two F class IMT 958 ERRVs will be delivered during 2014 and early 2016, replacing existing tonnage in the fleet. The fleet expansion comprises of four D Class vessels, complementing the existing four D Class vessels already in service within the fleet.
