A.P. Moller - Maersk's towage arm Svitzer announced the continued expansion of its fleet in Brazil, as part of the ongoing growth of its operations in the country.Svitzer Monte KT is the fourth tug to join the fleet in the country since April. The vessel is a sister to three tugs already delivered to Svitzer in 2023, which have been deployed across the ports of Pécem, Paranagua, and Santos on Brazil’s coast. The tug is one of six new Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs that will be put into operation by Svitzer in Brazil before the end of 2024.

Brazil's Paranagua port authority said on Tuesday that landslides caused by heavy rainfall blocked road and rail access to the port, the second busiest for grain exports in the country. In a statement, the authority said other port operations are normal as ships continue to unload and load products stored at the port's warehouses. Landslides have totally blocked the main access road to Parana's ports of Paranagua and Antonina, disrupting the flow of trucks headed to the coast, according to the statement.

APM Terminals announced the sale of its 5% share in Terminal de Contêineres de Paranaguá (TCP) to China Merchants Port Holdings. The share sale was initiated and led by Advent, who is the controlling shareholder of TCP. Price and terms were not disclosed and the share sale is subject to the normal reviews and condition precedents. In March 2016, APM Terminals had acquired the 5% share in TCP as part of the Grup Maritim TCB acquisition. In Brazil, APM Terminals maintains a strong port and landside offering to supply chains with ports in Itajai, Pecem and Santos that are integrated with inland services in Itajaí, Itapúa and Paranagua.

APM Terminals has completed the USD 1 billion acquisition of Spanish Grup Maritim TCB’s port and rail interests. APM Terminals has yet to receive approval for three of 11 terminals under Grup Maritim TCB, but has decided to move ahead with the acquisition, as the remaining terminals constitute less than 5% of the value of the acquisition. The acquisition thus adds 8 ports with a combined 2 million TEU equity-weighted volume to APM Terminals, expanding the network to 72 operating ports, across 69 countries. The acquisition complements APM Terminals current portfolio, adding 7% throughput in key locations including Spanish container terminal concessions in Barcelona, Valencia and Castellon, on the Mediterranean coast, along with the concessions in Gijon, on the Bay of Biscay.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL, President & CEO: Junichiro Ikeda) today announced the enhancement of its Asia and East Coast South America trade by merging existing CSW and SW2 services to form a new CSW service. The existing CSW and SW2 services, which are operated jointly by MOL, Maersk Line (ML) and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), will be merged into a new enhanced CSW service to strengthen the coverage between the major trading hub of Asia and key ports in the east coast of South America. A kamsarmax bulk carrier owned by Greece’s Transmed Shipping was hit by an explosion in one of its cargo holds while anchored at Paranagua Port in Brazil. The Paranaguá Port Authority says it received a report at about 3 p.m. The explosion may have been caused by gas generated by the maize kept being under high temperature, combined with recent fumigation gas, or by malpractice of the crew. The 235 meters long vessel remained under observation for 24 hours and was surveyed by technicians regarding the sea worthiness. The environmental authorities and the Navy have been informed of the incident and Appa continued to support the vessel. The 2013-built Akaki was loaded with corn and prepared to sail to Vietnam when the explosion occurred.

The congestion at Brazilian grain terminals is worsening and U.S. soybean suppliers may have reason to celebrate. U.S. soybean sales to date in the new marketing year have been rather sluggish, lagging the previous two years by 20 percent. At the same time, vessels are backing up at Brazilian ports amidst the height of their corn export season. Average wait times outside Paranagua, which ships up to 20 percent of Brazil's exportable soybeans, reached 43 days last month. Elsewhere in Brazil, queues have also been mounting. Of the 10 largest Brazilian grain ports by volume, ships waited on average twice as long to load and sail during October 2015 than they did in October 2014.
