Tug Construction and BP Form Tugboat Chartering Joint Venture

Vancouver, Wash. based leasing company Tug Construction, LLC announced it is partnering with energy giant BP in a new joint venture offering Jones Act qualified tugboats for bareboat charter. Tier IV Tug Athena Delivered to Crowley

Crowley has taken delivery of Athena, its fourth and most powerful Tier IV ship assist and harbor escort tugboat.The 77-foot Athena provides the agility of its compact size without the sacrifice of power – offering the most bollard pull for a tug under 80 feet in the market. The Robert Allan Ltd.-designed RApport 2500 D vessel operates on a pair of 3,386-horsepower Caterpillar Marine 3516 Tier IV-compliant engines, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions while achieving a power output of nearly 6,800 horsepower and 96 tons of bollard pull.

Kongsberg Maritimes's OEM agreement to embed Attunity replication technology as part of its new Information Management System (K-IMS) enables a solution projected ot deploy across thousands of vessels worldwide. As a critical part of the K-IMS solution, the Attunity technology enables real-time information availability between Microsoft SQL Server for Embedded Systems on the offshore and onshore systems. K-IMS is a solution designed to maximize performance, serving the oil and gas, offshore and maritime markets. It enables situational awareness by collecting data from systems and sensors onboard, combining them with operational knowledge, and providing them in the right format to fleet management offices and/or suppliers' support systems.

ABB to acquire Los Gatos Research (LGR) adding a new line of high-performance gas analyzers to its measurement business. Los Gatos Research (LGR) of Mountain View, California, is a 19-year-old, nearly 40-person company that provides analyzers and services to a wide range of customers needing real-time measurement of trace gases and isotopes for research and environmental monitoring. LGR's novel and innovative laser-based measurement strategies allow for non-destructive analysis of gases and liquids.

IMarEST President's Lecture Focuses on Failure

Engineering failures in the marine industry certainly cost time and resources to correct and, sadly, sometimes resulting in loss of life. At his President’s Day Lecture, Professor John Carlton FREng, Professor of Marine Engineering, City University London and the 109th President of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), will retrospectively discuss some of the marine failures that he has encountered, with the aim of teasing out the underlying issues that have contributed to their causes. The President’s Lecture will be held Tuesday 11 October at IET London in Savoy Place, London WC2. Tea will be served from 17.30, the President’s Lecture will begin at 18.00 and a Reception will follow at 19.00.

Ecospeed Protects Icebreaker on Expeditions to Antarctica

The British Antarctic Survey selected Ecospeed to provide a coating to protect their ice strengthened research vessel Ernest Shackleton during expeditions to the Antarctic region in which it is subjected to extreme mechanical forces. The vessel was coated in Frederikshaven, Denmark, where the grit blasting and application of the two layers were done under the eye of an Ecospeed inspector. The timing was geared to the schedule of the yard. The Ecospeed coating has no maximum overcoating time. Ernest Shackleton is a 1A1 ICE-05 class icebreaker which is used for expeditions to the South Pole.
