The technology group Wärtsilä has successfully installed its Serck Como Horizontal Tube Evaporator (HiTE) fresh water production system onboard the pipe-laying vessel, ‘Lorelay’, owned by offshore contractor Allseas. This is the first commercial installation of this Wärtsilä innovation. The retrofit project produces clean water for technical applications and human consumption, and has led to fuel savings of as much as one ton per day.The unique aspect of the Wärtsilä HiTE is that it is a multi-stage evaporator specifically designed for small to medium capacities of 30 to 150 tons per day.

New Freshwater Generator Slashes Power Consumption

Alfa Laval AQUA Blue S-type (Photo: Alfa Laval)

When it was introduced in 2008, Alfa Laval’s AQUA freshwater generation technology cut seawater needs and pump-related power consumption in half. With today’s AQUA Blue S-type, the need for electrical power is further reduced – to just one-third that of conventional freshwater generators. The new AQUA Blue S-type uses the same three-in-one AQUA plate technology as the original C-type configuration. But it maximizes energy efficiency and capacity-to-footprint ratio by making use of the vessel’s existing seawater cooling system pumps.

FSP LNG Containment System Construction To Begin Soon

The joint venture group FSP LNG BV stated that it is taking the FSP LNG Flat Panel Semi-membrane Prismatic Type B containment system through General Design Approval (GDA) with the American Bureau of Shipping in Houston, and is projecting that construction of the first tank will begin at the end of this year. Formed earlier this year to take the FSP LNG containment system through the general approval process, the group comprises Braemar Engineering, Honghua Group EnTX and Jamestown Marine Metals. In a joint statement, Chairman Zhang Mi, Chairman and President of Honghua Group, and Geoff Green, Managing Director of Braemar Engineering, said that “substantial progress has been made to date, and this is expected to continue going forward”.

Braemar Sub-Licenses FSP Containment System

Braemar LNG BV, the wholly owned subsidiary of Braemar Shipping Services PLC, has issued a sub-license to FSP LNG BV for the design and construction of a new Flat-panel, Semi-membrane, Prismatic-shaped (FSP) containment system, under the terms of the license it holds with General Dynamics NASSCO to utilize its patents in the design and construction of FSP LNG containment systems. FSP technology has been developed for marine LNG transport and can also be used in a range of applications, including Floating Liquefaction (FLNG), Floating Storage Units (FSU), Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRU) and LNG marine fuel tanks. The FSP system - a new Type B, LNG containment system - uses flat plate technology to overcome the issues associated with partial filling and sloshing.

Alfa Laval Debuts High-pressure Freshwater Generator

Alfa Laval launched a high-pressure option for the Alfa Laval AQUA Blue freshwater generator. The option’s modifications will allow AQUA Blue to handle higher jacket water pressures than those in use today. Launched just over a year ago, the AQUA Blue freshwater generator employs a unique plate technology. Alfa Laval’s three-in-one AQUA plates allow evaporation, separation and condensation to occur within the same plate pack, which means only half the seawater flow and pumping energy are needed.

General Dynamics NASSCO and Braemar LNG BV, a wholly owned subsidiary of Braemar Shipping Services PLC, have signed a technology licensing agreement for Braemar to use NASSCO’s intellectual property in its design and construction of Flat-Panel, Semi-Membrane, Prismatic-Shaped (FSP) LNG containment systems. FSP is a new multipurpose Type B flat-panel, semi-membrane, prismatic-shaped LNG tank-containment system which uses flat plate technology and a universal joint configuration.
