Backhoe Dredge Arrives in Port Hedland

A Hall Contracting backhoe dredge arrived in Port Hedland last week.Due to its low clearance hull design, the dredge was transported from the Middle East on board a semi-submersible heavy load carrier.After arriving at anchorage, the heavy load carrier was submersed, allowing the dredge to float off.Now anchored at the Port of Port Hedland, prep work is underway on the dredge before dredging works commence at the Spoilbank Marina in early July.Over the next few months, the backhoe dredge…

Iron Ore Shipments from Australia's Port Hedland to China Rise 16%

Iron ore shipments to China from Australia's Port Hedland rose by 16% in December from a month earlier, despite a short weather-related shutdown, the Pilbara Ports Authority said on Friday. Iron ore exports to China rose to 40.0 million tonnes from 34.44 million tonnes in November, data from the authority showed. Jan De Nul Completes Port Hedland Dredging

Jan De Nul Group completed the capital dredging works for the Channel Risk and Optimization Project (CROP) in Port Hedland, Western Australia, and can look back on a successful three-year cooperation with the Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA).Over the past three years a combination of Hopper Dredgers, a Cutter Suction Dredger and Split Hopper Barges were deployed to dredge sections of the 42-km long navigational channel and to further enhance the safe and sustainable access to the port of Port Hedland.

Pilbara Ports Throughput Up 6% During August

Australia's largest iron ore loading port of Port Hedland, operated by Pilbara Ports Authority, has delivered a total monthly throughput of 62.1 million tonnes (Mt) for the month of August 2019. This throughput was a 6% increase compared to the same month in 2018. The total throughput for the 2019/20 financial year to date is 118.8Mt, an increase of 4% from the same time last year. The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 46.1Mt, of which 45.4Mt was iron ore exports. The monthly throughput was a 7% increase from August 2018. Imports through the Port of Port Hedland totalled 180,000 tonnes, an increase of 61% from the same month in 2018. The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 14.9Mt, an increase of 4% from August 2018.

Pilbara Ports Annual Throughput Down

Australia's Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total annual throughput of 697.2 million tonnes (Mt) for the 2018/19 financial year. This result is a less than 1% change (decrease of 2.06 million tonnes) from last year’s record annual throughput.In June 2019, Pilbara Ports Authority achieved a total monthly throughput of 64Mt, a 1% increase on the same month in 2018. Iron ore throughput for June 2019 increased 2% from June 2018, to 60.2Mt. Pilbara Ports Throughput Down by 13%

Australia's Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has delivered a total monthly throughput of 50.3 million tonnes (Mt) for the month of March 2019, which was a 13% decrease compared to the same month in 2018.During March 2019, Tropical Cyclone Veronica closed the Port of Port Hedland for 92.5 hours, the Port of Dampier for 132 hours and the Port of Ashburton for 109.5 hours. The total throughput for the 2018/19 financial year to date is 510.3Mt, a decrease of 1% from the same time last year. The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 36.7Mt, of which 36.3Mt was iron ore exports. The monthly throughput was a 14% decrease from March 2018. Imports through the Port of Port Hedland totalled 152,000 tonnes, an increase of 14% from the same month in 2018.

Jan De Nul Wins Australia Dredging Work

The Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) engaged Jan De Nul Group to dredge the channel to the Port of Port Hedland. The project forms part of stage two of the Channel Risk and Optimization Project (CROP), a PPA initiative to sustain the long-term operation, development and future growth of the port of Port Hedland.Over the past several years, Jan De Nul Group has been the lead contractor on the majority of the capital dredging works as well as the maintenance dredging works within the port precinct of Port Hedland.

Pilbara Ports Hits Single-Tide Record Tonnage

Pilbara Ports Authority Shortlists Two for Port Hedland Expansion

New Tonnage Record at Port Hedland

A new tonnage record of 2,183,611 metric tons has been achieved over a 24-hour period at the Port of Port Hedland. The new record was set over an evening high tide last Thursday, December 14, and morning high tide on Friday, December 15, 2017. Six vessels exported a total of 1,043,838 metric tons on Thursday evening and another six vessels exported a total of 1,139,773 tonnes on Friday morning. The new tonnage record exceeds the previous record set in June 2016 by 8,611 metric tons. Meanwhile, Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total monthly throughput of 56.1 million metric tons for the month of November 2017. This was a decrease of 234,000 metric tons from the same month in 2016.

Pilbara Ports Breaks Cargo Handling Record

Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has delivered a record annual throughput of 668.5 million tonnes (Mt) for the 2016/17 financial year. This is an increase of 35Mt or 6% from last year’s annual throughput. In June 2017, PPA achieved a total monthly throughput of 55.8Mt, a slight decrease of 53,000 tonnes from the previous year. The Port of Port Hedland achieved a record annual throughput of 500.9Mt, an increase of 40.5Mt or 9% from the previous year. Iron ore exports for the year totalled 494.6Mt, an increase of 40.3Mt or 9% from the previous year. Imports for the year totalled 1.6Mt, a slight decrease of 55,000 tonnes or 3% from the previous year. June imports totalled 167,000, an increase of 3,000 tonnes or 2% from the same month in 2016.

Pilbara Marine Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group Ltd has placed an order with Damen Shipyards for the building of six, 32-meter Rotor Tugs. These will be deployed at the company’s operations at Port Hedland on Australia’s west coast, the world’s largest bulk export port. From there, Fortescue exports 165-170 million metric tons of iron ore per year. The six tugs are of the ART 85-32W class, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. Their Rotor Tug propulsion system features three azimuth thrusters; two forward and one aft.

VTS system for Port Hedland

Pilbara Ports Authority has awarded a contract to Australian Maritime Systems Pty Ltd to design and install a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system in a new state-of-the-art shipping control tower in Port Hedland. The VTS system is a critical component of the new Integrated Marine Operations Centre (IMOC), which would help manage the safe and efficient movement of approximately 6,000 vessel movements through the port each year. “The fit-for-purpose VTS system integrates radar, radio, CCTV and scheduling information to oversee the increasing number of vessels through the port,” said CEO Roger Johnston. Australian Maritime Systems Pty Ltd is a global specialist in marine navigation and one of the country’s leading provider of VTS systems.

Pilbara Ports' Throughput Zooms

Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total monthly throughput of 60.5 million tonnes (Mt) for the month of December 2016. This is an increase of 12% from the same month in 2015. The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 44.5 Mt, an increase of 17% from the previous year and a new monthly throughput record for the Port. Iron ore exports for the month totalled 43.9 Mt an increase of 17% from the same month in 2015. Imports totalled 149,000 tonnes, a decrease of 10,000 tonnes or 6% from the previous year. The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 15.9 Mt, a slight increase from the previous year. Imports totalled 83,000 tonnes, an increase of 10,000 tonnes or 13% from the previous year.

Utah Facility Exports Hit 100 mln

The Utah Point Multi-User Bulk Handling Facility (Utah Facility) at the Port of Port Hedland has marked a milestone with 100 million tonnes (Mt) of exports since its commissioning in September 2010. The achievement took place on 22 November 2016 following the loading and departure of MV Ju Hua Hai. The Utah Facility was established by Pilbara Ports Authority to meet the growth at the port and provide junior miners access to port facilities and export markets. Since its establishment, the Utah Facility has performed well above initial expectations and design capacity, with a record annual throughput of 22Mt achieved for the 2015/16 financial year.

Pilbara Ports Volume Up 2%

Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) delivered a total monthly throughput of 52.9 million tonnes (Mt) in the month of July 2016, amounting to an increase of 2% from the same month in 2015. The PPA which operates as a Western Australian Government Trading Enterprise, also saw  Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 39 Mt, an increase of 9% from the previous year. Iron ore exports for the month totalled 38.7 Mt an increase of 10% from the same month in 2015. Imports totalled 113,000 tonnes, a decrease of 44,000 tonnes or 28% from the previous year. The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 13.8Mt, a decrease of 1.9Mt or 12% from the same month in 2015. Imports totalled 57,000 tonnes, a decrease of 19,000 tonnes or 25% from the previous year.

Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total monthly throughput of 53.6 million tonnes (Mt) for the month of May. This is an increase of 2% from the same month in 2015. The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 39.8Mt, an increase of 3% from the previous year. Iron ore exports for the month totalled 39.3Mt an increase of 4% from the same month in 2015. Imports totalled 132,000 tonnes, a decrease of 29,000 tonnes or 18% from the previous year. The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 13.8Mt, an increase of 1% from the same month in 2015. Imports totalled 156,000 tonnes, an increase of 94,000 tonnes or 152% from the previous year.

Pilbara Ports being Evacuated

Pilbara Ports Authority has commenced evacuating the inner and outer anchorages at the Port of Port Hedland, as a tropical low, 315km from Port Hedland, continues to track toward the Pilbara coast in a southerly direction at six knots.   The evacuation of vessels at both anchorages is expected to be complete by midday (AWST).   The Port of Dampier is expected to begin evacuating vessels from the outer anchorage from 6pm tonight (AWST).   The Port of Ashburton remains open, however PPA will continue to monitor weather conditions.

Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has delivered a total monthly throughput of 52.6 million tonnes (Mt) for the month of November. This is an increase of 7% from the same month in 2014. The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 37.9 Mt, an increase of 9% from the same month in 2014. Iron ore exports for the month totalled 37.3Mt, an increase of 8% from the same month in 2014. Imports totalled 130,000 tonnes, a decrease of 81,000 tonnes or 38% from the previous year. The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 14.7Mt, an increase of 3% from the same month in 2014. Imports totalled 143,000 tonnes, an increase of 36,000 tonnes or 34% from the same month in 2014.

Passage of Cyclone: Australian Ore Ports Reopening

Berthing of vessels to be confirmed once the appropriate channel inspections have been carried out, sea conditions are within safe operating parameters for berthing and the Terminals are ready to start loading again. At this stage, first vessels to berth will be vessels that pre-loaded prior to terminal closure. Port Hedland has now re-opened and loading operations have resumed. The Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Perth advises that although Ex-TC 'Christine' has weakened below tropical cyclone intensity, damaging wind gusts are likely to continue on the northeastern side of the system during Wednesday as it moves quickly across southeastern WA. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected near the track.
