Sperry Marine to Equip Samskip’s Autonomous-Ready Green Vessels

Sperry Marine has been selected to deliver its Integrated Bridge Systems (IBS) for two hydrogen-powered, autonomous-ready container vessels ordered by Samskip Group.The ships, under construction at Cochin Shipyard Limited in India, will be the first in the world to combine zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells with navigation systems prepared for future autonomous operation.Scheduled for delivery in 2027, the 135-metre-long vessels will sail between Oslo Fjord and Rotterdam as part of a green corridor initiative.

Emissions-Free Power Supply Expected to Rise to 85% by 2030 in Europe

WWEA, IWSA to Promote Uptake of Wind Technology in Ships

The World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) has today announced a key strategic partnership with the International Windship Association (IWSA) in order to further promote the uptake of wind technology by the global shipping fleet. WWEA is a not-for-profit organisation with over 600-member organisations across 100 countries. The Association promotes the deployment of wind energy technology around the world, and, as founding member of the REN Alliance and the Global100%RE Platform, is working towards full substitution of all polluting and hazardous waste causing energies. IWSA, also a not-for-profit organisation, unites over 30 commercial wind propulsion technology providers and projects supported by numerous universities, research and testing organisations and other associates.

LNG Investment Swings to North America

The LNG industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation. North American activity (the majority of which is committed spend) is driving a return to growth in global capital expenditure. A wave of new LNG carrier newbuilds will also be required to support a huge increase in traded base-load LNG volumes. Douglas-Westwood’s (DW) new World LNG Market Forecast 2017-2021 indicates global LNG expenditure will total $284 billion (bn) between 2017 and 2021. This represents a 50% growth compared with the preceding five-year period. Report author, Mark Adeosun, commented, “Liquefaction terminals will remain the principal driver of expenditure with spend in the segment totalling $192bn. This will subsequently lead to a 42% increase in liquefaction capacity by the end of the forecast period.

Fendercare Assist in Wave Energy Converter Installation

Finnish renewable technology developer, Wello Ltd., install Orkney (UK) wave energy converter partnered by Fendercare Marine. Wello Penguin is a unique and patented construction to harvest ocean energy. It is based on industry standard components, including a generator typically used by wind turbines, to allow scalable manufacturing by virtually any shipyard using existing manufacturing processes. Fendercare Marine part of James Fisher and Sons plc were chosen by Wello to provide a range of services as part of the installation, of the 'Penguin' wave energy converter. The Penguin wave energy converter is now floating and connected to a mooring system in the Billia Croo test site.

IEA: Renewable Energy Growth Will Accelerate

Renewable power generation is expected to continue its rapid growth over the next five years, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency<http://www.iea.org/> (IEA) that acknowledges the coming-of-age of the renewable energy sector. The report says that despite economic uncertainties in many countries, global power generation from hydropower, solar, wind and other renewable sources is projected to increase by more than 40% to almost 6 400 terawatt hours (TWh) - or roughly one-and-a-half times current electricity production in the United States. The study, released, marks the first time the IEA has devoted a medium-term report to renewable power sources, a recognition of the dynamic and increasing role of renewable energy in the global power mix.
