Koniordos Appointed CEO of Yara
Yara, a Norwegian based scrubber supplier announced a change of leadership as Dr. Thomas Koniordos was introduced as the company’s new CEO. Koniordos, who up until September 18, served as Yara’s Head of Environmental Solutions, and also as Chairman of the Yara Marine Board, will succeed Peter Strandberg, the company's founder. Before joining Yara International in 2015 as head of the Environmental Business Line, Koniordos served for 14 years in various management functions and geographies in Danfoss.
Valmet to Supply Scrubber Systems to DSME
Finnish technology company Valmet Oyj will supply exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber system) for seven new building container vessels, which will be built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) for Korean Shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM).The developer and supplier of technologies, automation systems and services said in a press release that the building container vessels are the largest in the world, over 23,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) each. The scrubber system deliveries will start in 2019.The scrubber system order was included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2018 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed.Valmet has a long track record in supplying scrubber systems to different vessels types.
Yara Mulls Sale of Its Marine Scrubbers Business
Norwegian industrial chemical corporation Yara International said it is evaluating options for its Yara Marine Technologies (YMT) business, including a potential sale.Yara formed YMT after acquiring Green Tech Marine in 2014. New Modular Approach for Scrubber Retrofits
Damen Green Solutions (DGS) in partnership with Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) and AEC, the scrubber supplier, is trialling a new technique for retrofitting scrubbers. Designated the Modular Approach, this new process is designed to cut the time that a vessel typically needs to spend in dock from two or more weeks to just a few days. This dramatic reduction in downtime, in combination with a more cost-efficient, certified scrubber, will be welcomed by ship owners and operators. The first installation of this type is already underway for the RoRo cargo vessel Stena Scotia.
Navios Selects Preferred Scrubber Supplier
Navios ShipManagement Inc., a member of Navios Group, has issued a letter of intent endorsing DuPont Clean Technologies as the preferred supplier of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) for its vessels. The letter of intent also confirms that Navios and DuPont Clean Technologies will carry out a joint feasibility study and techno-economic analysis of marine scrubbing units for retrofitting or new build installation on a variety of vessels, from bulk carriers to containers and tankers. Wärtsilä EGC Gets First Flag Approval in Asia
The Singapore flag state authorities have approved Wärtsilä's exhaust gas cleaning (EGC) systems, making it the first EGC to be approved by an Asian flag authority. The approvals relate to Wärtsilä EGC systems ordered for two new RoRo vessels owned by a Japanese shipowner and currently being operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, the privately owned Swedish/Norwegian shipping company. The ships entered into service this year. The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marpol Annex VI regulations are aimed at reducing air pollution levels from ships by reducing the sulphur oxide (SOx) content of the vessel's engine emissions. The limits came into effect for ships operating inside Emission Control Areas with effect from January 2015.

Emissions Scrubber Tech for Exmar LPG Carriers
Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction, Korea, is building a pair of new LPG carriers for Exmar, which is a Belgian energy logistics company with an existing LPG fleet of around 30 vessels. The two new 38,000-cu. m. LPG carriers will be built at Hanjin’s Subic Shipyard in the Philippines and delivered to EXMAR in Q1 and Q2 of 2016. The pair is significant in that they will feature innovative emissions scrubbing technology from Alfa Laval, in response to global demand to significantly reduce emissions from ships.
Yara Acquires Majority Stake in Green Tech Marine
Yara International will expand its emissions control business by acquiring a majority 63% stake in Green Tech Marine (GTM), a sulphur oxide (SOX) scrubber supplier to the marine industry. “New International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations are being implemented, and combining GTM with our existing Nitrogen Oxide (NOX) portfolio will help the maritime industry cleanse their emissions and be compliant,” said Yves Bonte, Senior Vice President and head of Yara’s Industrial Segment.
