Incat Tasmania to Build High-speed Ferry for South Korea

Australian high speed craft builder Incat Tasmania announced Monday it has been awarded a contract to build a new fast ferry for Daezer Construction of South Korea. Work on the new 76-meter craft has already commenced with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.The high speed ferry will operate for Daezer on the line between Pohang and Ulleung, an island 117 nautical miles off the eastern coast of South Korea where the main economic activity is tourism.Incat Tasmania…

Advanced Whale Watching Vessel Delivered

Australian naval architect and engineering service firm Incat Crowther announced the delivery of Spirit of Migaloo II, a 24m Catamaran Whale Watch vessel, built by Aluminium Marine in Queensland, to be operated by Seaworld Cruises.The provider of engineering service specializing in catamaran and monohull designs said in a release that drawing on the latest Aluminium Marine-built Incat Crowther vessels, Spirit of Migaloo II is specifically configured for optimum viewing during whale watch trips, with an amazing on-board Whale Theater and upper deck side access that helps the operator offer an uncrowded, personalized and immersive experience.According to the company, the main deck features a lifting platform on the stern for water level viewing of aquatic wildlife.

Tanker Operator, Master Sentenced for Pollution

A tanker vessel operator and master were convicted this week for maintaining false and incomplete records relating to the discharge of oil and garbage from an oil tanker that was operating off the coast of Texas. On Monday, operator Sea World Management & Trading Inc. and the master of tanker Sea Faith, Edmon Fajardo, pleaded guilty to two felony violations of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships for failing to accurately maintain the Sea Faith’s Oil Record Book and Garbage Record Book, announced U.S. Attorney Ryan K. d'Amico Tankers Updates Ship Sales and Purchases

In January 2017, d’Amico Tankers sold MT High Endurance and MT High Endeavour, two 46,992 dwt medium-range product tanker vessels, built in 2004 by STX, South Korea, to Sea World Tankers a client of Sea World Management SAM, for a consideration of US$ 13.5 million each. At the same time, d’Amico Tankers will maintain the commercial employment of the Vessels having also concluded with the Buyer a 4 years’ time-charter agreement at an attractive rate. In May 2017, d’Amico Tankers d.a.c. signed a memorandum of agreement and bareboat charter contract for the sale and leaseback of the MT High Fidelity, a 49,990 dwt medium-range product tanker vessel, built in 2014 by Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard Co. Ltd. for a consideration of US$ 27.0 million.

d’Amico Delays Delivery of LR1 Tankers

Tanker shipping company d’Amico Tankers agreed with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co.Ltd. – South Korea to postpone the delivery of its first newbuilding LR1 (Long Range – 75,000 dwt)from April 2017 to October 2017. This agreement follows a specific request of an oil major and a key customer of the Company, which will take the vessel on a 18 month TC contract upon her delivery from Hyundai Vinashin Shipyard Co. Ltd. – Vietnam. At the same time, the estimated delivery dates of the remaining 5 LR1s under construction at Hyundai Vinashin Shipyard Co. Ltd. – Vietnam, have also been slightly delayed by approximately 2 months compared to the original schedule. Meanwhile,  M/T High Challenge, an ‘Eco’ new-building MR (Medium Range – 50,000 dwt) product tanker built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd.

D’Amico Sells Two MR Vessels

D’Amico International Shipping (DIS) announced that its operating subsidiary d’Amico Tankers (Ireland) sold MT High Endurance and MT High Endeavour, two vessels in favour of Sea World Tankers a clients of Sea World Management SAM, for a consideration of US$ 13.5 million each. The two 46,992 dwt medium-range product tanker vessels were built in 2004 by STX, South Korea. d’Amico Tankers will maintain the commercial employment of the Vessel having also concluded with the Buyer a 4 year time charter agreement at an attractive rate. As of today, DIS’ fleet comprises 53.8 double-hulled product tankers (MR and Handysize) with an average age of about 7.7 years (of which 30.3 owned vessels and 23.5 chartered-in vessels).

Damen's Third Ferry for South Korea

All good things come in threes as Damen delivers the third vessel of the year, from the Damen Fast Ferry (DFFe) series to South Korean operators. Having already delivered the SeaStar 5 to existing customer Seaspovill earlier this year, two additional DFFe deliveries to new customers highlight the success of the series as well as Damen's broad portfolio directly available from stock. In May 2015, operator Daezer Shipping took delivery of a DFFe 4212 named ‘Sunrise’ from Damen Shipyards Singapore (DSSi). Delivered within three months of ordering, the vessel is powered by four MTU main engines (16V2000 M72) reaching a speed of over 40 knots. The Sunrise is currently operating a route of very popular tourist destinations on Koreas East-coast from the island of Ulleung to Dokdo.

Second Sea Lion Rescued from California Oil Spill Dies at SeaWorld

A second sea lion rescued from along California's oil-fouled coastline near Santa Barbara has died at SeaWorld San Diego, where veterinarians are still caring for 15 surviving marine mammals brought in for treatment, a spokesman said on Tuesday. The petroleum-stained pinnipeds are among the earliest apparent wildlife casualties documented from a pipeline rupture that dumped as much as 2,400 barrels (101,000 gallons or 382,327 liters) of crude oil onto the shoreline and into the ocean west of Santa Barbara one week ago. The spill left an oil slick stretching for more than 9 miles (14.5 km) along the coast and forced the indefinite closure of two popular beaches. The area also has been placed off-limits to fishing and shellfish harvesting.

Oil-coated Pelicans Being cleaned at Rehab Center

Several petroleum-stained pelicans rescued from the blackened muck of California's latest oil spill spent the day on Friday being gently, painstakingly scrubbed clean at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Los Angeles. The six pelicans brought this week to the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center in the city's San Pedro harbor area were the first known surviving wildlife casualties from a pipeline rupture on Tuesday about 150 miles away near Santa Barbara. They were to be joined soon by two more oil-contaminated pelicans from the spill zone, said Christine Fiorello, a veterinarian from the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at the University of California, Davis.

Harbor Police Rescues Stranded Sea Lion

Sea lions are a common sight in San Diego Bay, but a sea lion wandering a busy roadway and then ending up in the back of a patrol car is slightly rarer. The San Diego Harbor Police Department received a call on February 18 of a sea lion in the roadway of Harbor Island Drive, near a local restaurant. Encountering the uninjured sea lion, responding officers Christine Sperry and Luis Martinez used salmon to lure the adult female sea lion into the water. Within minutes the wayward sea lion was back up on the sidewalk and nudging Officer Sperry in with her nose.

Mitsubishi Minatomirai Museum to Open "Ocean" Zone

On March 1 (Sun) the Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum will launch its newly renovated "Ocean" zone, an area dedicated to introducing advanced technologies relating to the earth's oceans. In its new configuration the zone will display items in a way that enables visitors to experience what it's like to undertake deep-sea exploration using, for example, a simulator of a next-generation submersible research vessel. The centerpiece of the zone will be a disassembled full-scale mockup of the Shinkai 6500 manned submersible research vessel. The theme of the new "Ocean" zone will be "Let's Go to the Deep-sea World!" The main display, a full-size re-creation of the Shinkai 6500 displayed like a cutaway, will incorporate reproductions of both the outside and inside of the vessel.

Maersk Line, Keystone, Awarded MSC Contract Modifications

The US Department of Defense informs that Maersk Line and Keystone Prepositioning Services, have each been awarded vessel operation & maintenance contracts. 1. Maersk Line Ltd., Norfolk, Virginia, is being awarded a $33,016,247 modification under a previously awarded firm-fixed-price award fee contract (N00033-11-C-3110) to exercise the fourth option period of this contract for the operation and maintenance of five USNS Bobo-class ships, which support the U. S. Marine Corps Maritime Prepositioning Force worldwide. Work will be performance at sea world-wide, and work for this option period is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2015.

OPITO Launches New Research Project

Oil and gas industry skills body OPITO has commissioned a new study which aims to identify the skills and competence gaps in offshore supervisors and how this impacts on the prevention of major safety incidents. Researchers at Robert Gordon University are undertaking in-depth interviews with current, former and retired offshore installation managers (OIMs) with extensive experience of working in the UK Continental Shelf to gain their insights into the influence of managerial commitment to safety in the offshore industry. The announcement follows last week's comments by industry leaders at the Oil and Gas U.K. breakfast that the shortage of experienced staff is potentially jeopardizing the North Sea’s world-leading safety standards as the sector prepares for its biggest boom for 30 years.

NOAA: Lectures on Noise & Marine Mammals

The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service and scientists from various academic institutions are sponsoring a free national lecture series on marine mammals and human noise. They will hold the eighth lecture in Baltimore, Md. on Sept. 23, 2004. NOAA Fisheries Acoustics Program and other scientific experts in marine mammals and human noise are hosting the programs at public aquariums and marine laboratories around the country, to help increase public knowledge about human noise and marine mammals. The lecture series, Marine Animals and Human Noise, started in March in Florida, and will continue through November 2004.

U.S. Navy, Colombian Sub Train Under DESI

Colombian Armada submarine A.R.C. Tayrona completed joint training with several U.S. Navy ships in early November, during a brief deployment under the Diesel Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI) off the coast of Mayport. The DESI program, established in 2001, has engaged several diesel South American navies with submarines to provide a series of programmed stateside deployments.
