U.S. Coast Guard Responds to Collision Near Paducah
On-scene assessment teams have reported the maximum estimated potential clarified slurry oil released from the tug collision is now 250,000 gallons, Thursday. The maximum potential spill has been reduced because the two remaining partitions aboard the affected barge were reportedly secured. A Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry fixed wing aircraft conducted an over flight earlier today, which revealed a five-mile discoloration beginning at the impact site. A safety zone is in place on the Mississippi River, and currently closed to all traffic except response vessels between mile markers 939-922. A queue is in place, six up bound and nine down bound. Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley watchstanders received a call about a collision between two towboats at mile marker 937 at 8:22 p.m. Wednesday.
Traffic Restrictions Lifted on Mississippi River
The safety zone and traffic restrictions in place from markers 936 to 938 on the Mississippi River following a towboat collision and subsequent oil spill have been lifted, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. A section of the lower Mississippi River was closed to all traffic except response vessels last week after two towboats collided Wednesday at Mississippi River mile marker 937, rupturing the cargo tank of a barge carrying slurry oil which discharged approximately 150,000 gallons of oil into the river.

A barge containing clarified slurry oil suffered damage from the collision. Its cargo tank was ruptured, discharging approximately 120,588 gallons of oil into the river, according to the Coast guard. The Mississippi River is closed to all traffic except response vessels between mile markers 939-922, and a safety zone is in place. A queue of 23 vessels awaiting transit down and 10 vessels awaiting transit up has formed as of 10:50 a.m. this morning. The Coast Guard said it intends to minimize the environmental impact of the spill, though opening river traffic is a priority as active commercial traffic is critical to the lifeblood of the region.
Lake Michigan Coal-burning Ferry: Future Questioned
The EPA permit that has long allowed the SS Badger to dump coal ash into the lake is now under review. On the shores of Lake Michigan, the tiny town of Ludington, Mich., is home port to the last coal-fired ferry in the U.S. The SS Badger has been making trips across the lake to Manitowoc, Wis., during the good-weather months since 1953. And as it runs, the 411-foot ferry discharges coal ash slurry directly into the lake, reports NPR. An Environmental Protection Agency permit allows the Badger to dump four tons of ash into the lake daily.
Cargo Removal Ops Begin on Sunken Barge
CHICAGO, IL – The process of removing the Clarified Slurry Oil that remains on board the EMC423 barge has commenced today. This operation will be closely monitored by the Coast Guard and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that it is safe, efficient, and will not result in further pollution. While this lightering operation is underway, the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal will be closed to all vessel traffic between the Cicero Avenue Bridge and Chicago Belt Railway Bridge so as to not interfere with the cargo removal process. The Coast Guard has been working in partnership with facilities along the canal that rely on shipments of products and materials by barge to minimize the economic effect of this closure.

The last quarter of the 2016 has been a busy time for DRAGFLOW technical and manufacturing teams as we received four important orders for custom-made dredgers. In the first place. A contract for five (5) dredgers, model DRH300E23 has won for sand and gravel extraction in Middle East. The dredgers are equipped with a DRAGFLOW Hydraulic pump model HY300 and a CAT C13 engine. They will operate at minus 40m depth for sand extraction. The material is delivered at 1 km distance, with a 350mm hose.

Ellicott Dredge Technologies (EDT) has been successful in launching a Mud Cat Multi-Function Dredge (MFD) at the SouthBay Residential Development in Bismarck, North Dakota. The dredge will remove 20,000 cubic yards (15,290 m3) of sand and clay from a private residential lake where developers are busy constructing high-end single family homes situated on 3 miles (5 km) of shoreline. Barge Explodes in Chicago
An explosion onboard the EMC423 tank barge on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal Wednesday evening has resulted in the presumed death of a crewmember and the closure of the waterway, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. The tank barge that exploded was carrying approximately 588 thousand gallons of Clarified Slurry Oil. This cargo is a byproduct of the oil refining process and is used to make fuel oils. It was loaded onto the barge at the Exxon Mobile Plant in Joilet, Ill., and was destined for the Ameropan Oil Corporation facility in Cicero, IL. The tank barge involved in the explosion is owned and operated by the Egan Marine Corporation. Egan Marine operates a small fleet of barges and towboats in Lemont, Ill.

SMD Begins Auxiliary Cutter Assembly
Nautilus Minerals Inc. will begin assembling its third and final Seafloor Production Tool (SPT), the Auxiliary Cutter (AC), this week at Soil Machine Dynamics’ (SMD) facility in Newcastle in Tyne, UK. Nautilus' CEO, Mike Johnston said “we are pleased that the assembly of the AC, the third and final of the three SPTs has now commenced, with the arrival of the chassis at the SMD facility. The next milestone for the SPTs will be the commencement of Factory Acceptance Testing on the already assembled Bulk Cutter (BC). We look forward to reporting on this progress next month”.
This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History – January 24
1968- Seifu Maru, a Japanese refrigerator vessel, reported a fire and requested clearance to enter Dutch Harbor, Alaska to combat it. They also reported that two crewmembers had been overcome by smoke and requested their evacuation for hospital treatment. Clearance was granted and CGC Citrus was ordered to proceed and assist in fighting the fire. The burning ship arrived in Dutch Harbor on Jan 24 and advised that the fire was raging between the decks. Fire fighting parties from Citrus began assisting the crew of the Japanese vessel. USCG aircraft evacuated three patients from Seifu Maru to Kodiak for hospitalization. The fire assistance rendered by Citrus in a four-day operation saved the Japanese vessel.
Marine Diesel Purification Breakthrough by SurePure
Liquid photopurification specialist company SurePure Inc. apprises of a breakthrough in the microbiological purification of contaminated marine diesel fuel, using SurePure's technology as an alternative to biocide addition or excessive micro-filtration. SurePure explains that the contamination of diesel fuel is a significant problem for the maritime shipping industry, leading to extensive waste of fuel and environmental contamination. The industry is seeking to improve conventional means by which it cleans fuel where micro-organisms have proliferated.
Spill Response Continues on Mississippi River
The unified command in Paducah continues its response to a spill in the Mississippi River at mile marker 937, Wednesday as active recovery efforts are underway to remove the submerged clarified slurry oil spilled as a result of a collision involving two towboats on September 2, 2015, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. According to the Coast Guard, recovery is focused on the two anomalies near the incident site that were detected by high resolution side scan sonar. The two areas were broken down into 24 grids to enable response personnel to target removal of the oil and document the progress. As of Tuesday afternoon, an environmental clamshell equipped with precision dredge position software was removing moderate to heavily oiled sediment from the river bottom.

Barge Captain Gets Prison Time for Fatal Explosion
An Illinois man who was captain of a petroleum barge that exploded in a Chicago canal in 2005, killing a crew member, was sentenced to six months in prison on Friday, prosecutors said. Dennis Egan, 36, of Topeka in central Illinois, and the barge owner, Egan Marine Corp. of Lemont, were each convicted in June 2014 of negligent manslaughter of a seaman and negligently discharging oil into a waterway, according to a statement from prosecutors. The Chicago suburban company was ordered to pay $5.3 million in restitution to the National Pollution Funds Center for the clean-up. Canal Corporation Awards Contract
New York State Canal Corporation announced that the contract for a new hydraulic cutter-head dredge has been awarded to Ellicott Dredges of Baltimore, Md. The acquisition of the new dredge is a part of the Canal Corporation's ongoing effort to upgrade its fleet and increase its dredging capacity, while complying with environmental regulations. The new dredge will be stationed in Utica, NY and will replace a 1927 DeLaVergne. The new dredge will have double the horsepower of existing dredge, which is aimed to provide less down-time for repairs and maintenance. Delivery is scheduled for May 24, 2006. The newest dredge in the Canal Corporation's fleet is currently a 1980 Ellicott based in Waterford, NY.

Great Lakes Shipyard Performs Emergency Repairs on USCG Aids to Navigation Barge. United States Coast Guard Cutter MOBILE BAY of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin departed Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio after completion of drydocking and repairs to the bow thruster on it 120-foot Aids to Navigation Barge. The barge was hauled out on Monday, September 17th using the Shipyard’s 770-ton Marine Travelift. The shipyard immediately removed the bow thruster and disassembled it in the shop for repairs.
Port Manatee Berth 12 Dreding Underway
