Columbus Launches 80m Yacht Dragon

SMS Completes Fast Ferry Refit in Cherbourg

Ship repairer and marine engineering services provider SMS said it has completed its second major high-speed craft refit in France.SMS, which is based in Southampton in the U.K., has undocked Brittany Ferries’ Normandie Express in Cherbourg on the Ports of Normandy Authority’s (PNA) ship lift. Over a three-week period, SMS undertook the docking on the Rolls-Royce syncrolift in the Port of Cherbourg. SMS, a ship repair and marine engineering service company based in Southampton, has completed its first major high speed craft (HSC) refit in France. Last week, SMS docked the HSC Condor Rapide on the Port Normands Associe’s (PNA) ship lift at the Port of Cherbourg in France.The Rolls-Royce syncrolift is 90m x 32m and offers a 3000T lift capacity. MacGregor Acquires Marine Business from TTS Group

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has entered into an agreement to acquire the marine and offshore businesses from TTS Group, a global provider of cargo handling equipment and services for merchant and offshore ships for an enterprise value of EUR 87 million ($106 mln). The combination of the two businesses will produce greater scale and diversification and will strengthen MacGregor's portfolio and market position in key markets for cargo and load handling equipment. Based on preliminary estimates, potential cost synergies are estimated to be around EUR 30-35 million on annual level and are expected to be reached within three years from closing.

Sturrock Dry Dock Puts Operation Phakisa into Action

The Sturrock Dry Dock in the Port of Cape Town has been a hive of activity recently with a number of interesting vessels berthing at the facility for repairs and maintenance. The mining vessel, mv Debmar Atlantic, owned by De Beers Marine Namibia (Pty) Ltd, recently underwent routine work at the dry dock, carried out by contracting firms. Built in 1978, mv Debmar Atlantic features its own diamond processing plant on board the vessel. During the mining process gravel, bearing diamonds, is airlifted from the seabed to the vessel.

Yacht service, refit, repair and maintenance yard Marina Barcelona 92 (MB’92) has awarded a contract to Pearlson Shiplift Corporation (PSC) for the design and supply of a new ship lift and transfer system as part of an expansion project underway at its Barcelona shipyard. The yard’s new ship lift system will benefit from PSC technology originally established in 1957 with the invention of the Syncrolift system by Raymond Pearlson and its subsequent development worldwide. Barcelona Yacht Repairer Adds New Shiplift

Yacht service, refit, repair and maintenance yard Marina Barcelona 92 (MB’92) has awarded a contract to Pearlson Shiplift Corporation (PSC) for the design and supply of a new shiplift and transfer system as part of an expansion project underway at the Barcelona shipyard. The first phase of the Shiplift project will provide a platform of 81 meters by 20 meters with the capability to lift and transfer mega yachts of up to 105 meters length. The system is designed to enable future increases in length and capacity for mega yachts of up to 120 meters length.

Syncrolift Deal Strengthens TTS Market Position

Through its subsidiary TTS Handling Systems AS, TTS Group ASA has signed an agreement with Rolls-Royce Marine North America Inc. for purchase of Syncrolift assets. The asset deal gives TTS Handling Systems AS an exclusive and unlimited right to conduct future business based on Syncrolift products and relevant intellectual properties and includes takeover of drawings of 250 shiplifts, patents and brand (Syncrolift). On March 29, the Ocean Class Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessel hull number 27 started its official life as the R/V Neil Armstrong, the first research vessel named after a space explorer. Carol Armstrong, the widow of the famed astronaut, performed the christening duties during a brief sunbreak on a windy and rainy Pacific Northwest afternoon. The number of illustrious speakers highlighted the rich diversity of agencies involved in the design, construction and operation of the vessel.

Damen Opens JV Yard in Vietnam

On March 20, 2014, Vietnamese Minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong, cut the ribbon for the latest addition to Damen Shipyard Group’s portfolio. Damen Song Cam is a new yard, and is one of the largest in the group and represents Damen’s first formal Joint Venture yard in Vietnam. Damen said Song Cam is considered state-of-the-art, bringing a western shipyard designed to meet European health, safety and environmental standards into a Vietnamese environment. The yard will produce around 40 ships per year in phase one.

Rolls-Royce Syncrolift Installed in Vietnam

Rolls-Royce announced that the largest capacity Syncrolift shiplift to be built in Vietnam is now officially open for service. The Syncrolift has been installed as an element of a new shipbuilding and ship repair development at New Song Thu shipyard. Rolls-Royce designed and supplied the Syncrolift, which acts like a large elevator that raises and lowers vessels in and out of the water for dry-docking ashore. It has a docking platform 98 meters long with a width of 20 meters, and a maximum net lifting capacity of more than 4,500 metric tons. This is the eighth to be installed in Vietnam.

MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH & Spanish repair shipyard Marina Barcelona 92 (MB92) agree cooperation on work and refit of MTU  yacht engines. The agreement establishes technical and commercial relationships between both parties to carry out service work and refit on MTU engines installed in yachts visiting MB92. To this end Tognum Group subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen has established an office directly within the shipyard. MB92 is located in the port of Barcelona and is one of the largest shipyards worldwide for the refit, service work and maintenance of super and mega yachts.

Alameda’s Bay Ship & Yacht Wins Contract to Refit Superyacht Bay Ship & Yacht (BSY), located in Alameda, California, has been awarded the contract to lengthen the expedition yacht SuRi by adding a 36-foot mid-body hull and superstructure plug for a new overall length of 208 feet. Rolls-Royce won contracts to supply Syncrolift ship lifts to two shipyards in the Middle East. R/Vs at Bay Ship & Yacht

The yard-crew at Bay Ship & Yacht shipyard, located on San Francisco Bay in the island City of Alameda, carefully rolled the cradled RV New Horizon from its work station, along the rails to the yard’s new 1200-ton Syncrolift, which lowers the vessel into the estuary that separates Alameda from Oakland. The 170 x 36 ft. vessel had undergone several weeks of underwater hull and machinery repairs at the yard. Once back in the water, she headed to her home port at the University of California’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego to join the three other vessels of the research fleet.
