Boxer, Shuster to be AAPA’s 2014 ‘Port Persons of Year’

Admiral Thad Allen Join RAND as Senior Fellow

Adm. Thad W. Allen announced that after completing his service as national incident commander of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, he will join the RAND Corporation as a senior fellow, effective Oct. “Thad Allen has served the U.S. government and U.S. Coast Guard with great distinction,” said RAND President and CEO James A. Thomson. “We are delighted he will continue to take on the most difficult policy challenges as a RAND senior fellow. Allen was scheduled to join RAND in May 2010, shortly after he retired as commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard. But his transition was delayed when he was asked by President Obama to manage the oil spill emergency response and clean-up, for which his leadership has been widely praised.

Follow Interagency Arctic Trip with Social Media

Several White House and federal agency officials participating in the new Ocean Policy Task Force will be traveling throughout Alaska and the Arctic from Aug. 17 to 21, to observe ongoing activities in the region and meet with local and indigenous community leaders and industry representatives. DHS Secretary Visits Coast Guard

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited Coast Guard Headquarters, on Jan. 22, to receive briefings from the service's senior leaders and to tour the Coast Guard's National Command Center. The Coast Guard was the first component agency of the department Napolitano visited following her swearing-in Wednesday as the department's third secretary. Napolitano was greeted by Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad. W. Allen and honors were rendered by the Coast Guard's Ceremonial Honor Guard.

Ostermiller President, Nat’l CG Museum

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, and a partner of the National Coast Guard Museum Association, announced the appointment of Jerry Ostermiller as the president of the National Coast Guard Museum. An accomplished museum administrator with over 25 years experience, Mr. Ostermiller will establish museum programming, develop internal infrastructure and lead capital campaign fund raising efforts for the construction of the country's newest national museum in New London, Connecticut. Coast Guard Embraces Social Media

The Coast Guard’s top officer discussed plans to adopt social-media practices to modernize the Coast Guard and increase the organization’s transparency in a teleconference yesterday with bloggers and online journalists. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad W. Allen spoke about ways the Coast Guard plans to use social-media tools to get the broadest representation of the Coast Guard to the public. “We’re going to be moving from ( Web ) 1.0 to 1.2 to 2.0 to 2.5, and … the challenge and the problem is we shouldn’t take the status quo as an acceptable position,” Allen said. Making the organization more transparent comes at a crucial time, especially during hurricane season, when communication is extremely vital.

During a two-hour session before the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Dec. Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead, Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James T. Conway and Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Thad W. Allen began the session by first thanking Congress and the nation for their support. They also stressed that together the nation's sea services will focus on remaining a balanced maritime force while promoting greater collective security, stability and trust. "That all three maritime Service chiefs have signed this strategy and appear before the committee today is a testament to our commitment to integrating our efforts in protecting our nation's vital interests," Roughead testified.

New Coast Guard Station to be Unveiled

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled Thursday to celebrate the opening of the new Coast Guard Station Oak Island operations building. Crews from Coast Guard Station Oak Island, located in Caswell Beach, N.C., will be opening their doors to a new station after their original station burned down Feb. 1, 2002, for unknown reasons. In the mean time, crews have been conducting operations for more than two years in two doublewide trailers while a new, state-of-the-art facility was constructed on familiar station ground. Since the fire, Station Oak Island has grown larger with the addition of a new 25-foot homeland security response boat and 10 more crewmembers. Vice Admiral Hull To Lead USCG Atlantic Area

The U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area, Fifth District and Maritime Defense Zone Atlantic Command will welcomed a new commander during a change-of-command ceremony 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday . Vice Admiral James D. Hull will relieve Vice Admiral Thad W. Allen, who is taking the position of Chief-of-Staff for the Coast Guard. Admiral James M. Loy, Commandant U.S. Coast Guard, and Navy Vice Admiral Albert H. Konetzni, Jr., Deputy and Chief of Staff, U.S. Atlantic Fleet are scheduled to preside. Hull comes to the Atlantic Area Command from his assignment as Commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District.

Service Chiefs to Present Strategy for New Maritime Era

Adm. Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, Gen. James T. Conway, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, and Adm. Thad W. Allen, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, will present the new Maritime Strategy known as “A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower” at the International Seapower Symposium at the Naval War College on Oct. 17. Coast Guard Appoints Lantz to Standards Post

Adm. Thad W. Allen, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, announced the appointment of Jeffrey G. Lantz as the Coast Guard's director of national and international standards. Lantz will begin his senior executive service position at the Coast Guard's Washington headquarters on June 25. Allen Confirmed as next USCG Commandant

The US Senate voted to promote VADM Thad W. Allen to the rank of Admiral and to serve as the next Commandant of the US Coast Guard. Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff issued a Statement commending the Senate for its quick action.
