US Set to Blow Up Fake Warship in the South China Sea

As part of a joint military exercise with the Philippines, the U.S. Navy is slated to sink a mock warship on April 26, 2023, in the South China Sea.The live-fire drill is not a response to increased tensions with China over Taiwan, both the U.S. and the Philippines have stressed. Maine Maritime Academy Names Paul as President

Maine Maritime Academy’s Board of Trustees announced that Jerald S. “Jerry” Paul has been named as the college’s 15th President. Paul, current President of Capitol Access and a 1989 graduate of the institution, will take office this spring.Paul will succeed President William J. Brennan, who steps down from the position at the end of April following 12 years of transformative leadership at MMA. “I am gratified that the Board has selected such a fine individual to lead this wonderful college when I step down next spring,” says President Brennan.

Solid-State Welding Processes Being Developed for NASA Manufacturing Programs Could Significantly Reduce Workboat Fabrication CostsWhether it is for a tug boat, cargo vessel, or an offshore supply ship, much of the workboat fabrication industry is located along the Southern Coast of the U.S. But a visit to any one of the workboat facilities in that area (or any other in the country) would reveal antiquated and archaic fabrication processes used seventy years ago. American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) named Mark K. Knoy as its president and chief executive officer in August 2011. Prior to joining ACBL, he was vice president of American Electric Power’s (AEP) Fuel, Emissions and Logistics Group and president of AEP River Operations, having joined AEP with its 2001 purchase of MEMCO Barge Line. From 1984 to 1994, he was owner/operator of The Mark Twain Towing Company and Delmar Marine, Inc., Pekin, Illinois. He began his career in 1973 working aboard towboats on the inland waterways as a deck hand and then as a captain.

Rising Seas Will Swallow 14,000 U.S. Historic Sites - study

Almost 14,000 archeological sites and national monuments in the United States could be lost by the year 2100 as seas rise due to climate change, scientists said on Wednesday. Investment Impact in Inland Waterways System

The National Waterways Foundation (NWF) has commissioned and released a two-year, ground-breaking study by the University of Tennessee and the University of Kentucky, “Inland Navigation in the United States: An Evaluation of Economic Impacts and the Potential Effects of Infrastructure Investment” (November 2014). The study examines the waterways’ national economic return on investment and the need for and benefits of an accelerated program of waterways system improvements that sustain and create American jobs. The study evaluates the inland navigation system as it is currently funded and configured, and as it might be through renewed infrastructure investment.

The Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans mourns the passing of former Board Chairman Francis E. “Hank” Lauricella. Gov. Cropper Named President of Cal Maritime

Thomas A. Cropper, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, was named president of California Maritime Academy.

The California State University Board of Trustees has named Thomas A. Cropper, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, as president of California Maritime Academy. "I am pleased and honored to be chosen as the next president of the California Maritime Academy, and look forward to working closely with the exceptional students, staff and faculty," said Cropper. Cropper was among the finalists for the position to succeed retiring President William B. Eisenhardt, who has served as president since 2001. He is expected to begin in his new role as president on July 1 following retirement from active duty.

Barge Transport Claims Only a Portion of the Benefits Our Navigable Waterways Make Available to the Nation. The National Waterways Foundation (NWF) has produced a new brochure – “Waterways: Vital to the Nation” – capturing the key findings of the January 2011 study, “Toward a Full Accounting of the Beneficiaries of Navigable Waterways,” by the University of Tennessee Center for Transportation Research. The study addresses the broad range of beneficiaries of America’s inland waterway pools and channels.

Bruner, Newsome Receive East Coast Connie Awards

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present the 2010 East Coast-based Connie Awards to J. Russell Bruner, Chairman and CEO of Maersk Inc. and James I. Newsome III, President and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The evening event on Tuesday, December 7 at The Newark Club will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of CII. The Newark Club event is in addition to the West Coast-based Connie Awards on September 30 in Long Beach, CA, honoring Ron Widdows and Jon Hemingway. CII holds two Connie events each year to accommodate industry leaders on both coasts. The University of North Florida (UNF) Transportation & Logistics (T&L) Flagship Program recognized Tami Porter, Director, East Coast & Gulf Terminal Operations of Horizon Lines, LLC, as the recipient of the Impact Award for Community Partner. Ms. Porter was presented the honor at an awards ceremony on May 1 in Jacksonville, FL. Porter was recognized for her contributions to the UNF T&L Flagship Program, including her work evaluating industry case competitions and participating in panel discussions for students. She also arranged port and vessel tours at Jaxport and provided guidance and expertise for the 130 students involved in the program, according to Lynn Brown, Associate Director of UNF's T&L Flagship Program.
