Alfa Laval said it has signed fleet agreements with Polsteam and Nova Ship Tech SA for the supply of PureBallast 3, the third generation of Alfa Laval’s ballast water treatment technology.Under the agreements, Alfa Laval will provide dozens of Polsteam and Nova Ship Tech SA vessels with PureBallast 3 systems – the vast majority of which will handle large flows of more than 1,000 m3/h.The agreements with Polsteam and Nova Ship Tech SA come as many ship owners shift their focus from individual ballast water treatment systems to complete fleet solutions.

Three container vessels on order at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China for Eimskip Island ehf and Royal Arctic Line A/S will be equipped with Langh Tech hybrid scrubber systems and water treatment systems for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The newbuilds are of a new energy-efficient design developed by Deltamarin. The in-line scrubbers are multi-inlet installations, where the main engine and auxiliary engines are connected to the same scrubber tower. In addition, the MAN Diesel & Turbo two-stroke main engines of the newbuildings are equipped with EGR systems.

Now in its third generation, the newest Alfa Laval PureBallast ballast water treatment system has been engineered to minimize footprint and installation costs. Alfa Laval PureBallast 3.1 Compact Flex is the latest addition to the PureBallast family of systems. Based on loose components, it is the answer to space and flexibility needs. Available for flows of 32–1,000 m3/h, it packs the leading ballast water treatment technology into a footprint up to 20 percent smaller than that of PureBallast 3.1.

The company River Advice started to make its Avalon fleet environment-friendly a few years ago. The Avalon Scenery was the first ship to use the MERUS water treatment technology, which was installed in 2012, marking the beginning of a cooperation between River Advice and Pronomar. Now several Avalon ships have the MERUS rings on board, including most recently the Monarch Empress. The Monarch Empress is a luxurious river cruise ship with 72 cabins which can accommodate 144 passengers. Furthermore, the vessel is equipped with a bar-lounge, restaurant and fitness center.

Trojan Marinex has been named the winner of the 2016 Outstanding Private Sector Achievement award from the Reduce Risks from Invasive Species Coalition (RRISC). The award goes to a private sector company that has introduced a product or service that has the potential to make a significant contribution to reducing the environmental and economic risks posed by invasive species. The award – recognizing Trojan’s environmental stewardship and ballast water treatment technology – was presented on June 15, 2016 at the annual RRISC Congressional Reception in Washington, D.C.

Ballast water management experts, meeting at the recent IMO-GloBallast R&D Forum in Canada, have showcased the latest developments in ballast water management and highlighted the areas where further research is needed, in order to prevent the spread of potentially harmful species in ballast water. Some 140 participants from IMO Member States, academia, private sector, testing facilities and the maritime technology industry were meeting at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada, for the 6th Global Environment Facility (GEF)-United Nations Development Program (UNDP)-IMO GloBallast R&D Forum and Exhibition on Ballast Water Management (16-18 March 2016), under the banner “Ballast Water Management Convention – moving towards implementation”.

A federal appeals court ruling handed down this week underscores the urgent need for Congress to pass the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) and establish a uniform federal framework for the regulation of ballast water and other vessel discharges, according to the American Waterways Operators (AWO), the trade association that represents the U.S. tugboat, towboat and barge industry. Vessel discharges – including discharges of ballast water, which vessels use to maintain their stability – are currently regulated in redundant and inconsistent ways by two federal agencies, the Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency, and over two dozen states, the AWO noted. Alfa Laval PureBallast is now available to significantly smaller vessels. Alfa Laval’s ballast water treatment technology, which was submitted for USCG approval in March 2015, can now be used in systems for flows of 87 cubic meters per hour. A variety of vessel types, including offshore supply vessels, will benefit from the extended PureBallast flow range. The lower capacities are enabled by a new reactor, optimized for system sizes from 170 down to 87 cu. m./hr.. This is a major expansion of the PureBallast family, where a 250 cu. m./hr. system was previously the smallest available.

The exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber) supplied by Deltamarin Floating Construction to Bore Ltd on a turnkey basis, has received confirmation of full compliance with SECA and IMO regulations (approved by Lloyd's register and TRAFI, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency). After the 14-day dry docking, the open loop operation of the scrubber was in immediate use when the ship left the repair yard.
