Vessel Draft Restrictions Lifted at Oregon Inlet, NC
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) informed it has lifted restrictions and enforcement of the regulated navigation area Thursday at Oregon Inlet between Bodie and Pea Islands. The captain of the port for Sector North Carolina lifted vessel draft restrictions and enforcement of the regulated navigation area at the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge in Oregon Inlet as outlined in 33 Code of Federal Regulations 165.520. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently dredged an unmarked channel in the shoaled area of the navigation channel in the vicinity of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge. Mariners are encouraged to obtain the most recent USACE Wilmington District hydrographic survey information, centerline waypoints and controlling depth.
USACE Wilmington Christen New Survey Boat
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wilmington District name new survey boat 'Swart' at the engineer repair yard. The boat is named after Dirk Swart III (1935-2011) who served as captain and operator of District survey vessel Gillette from 1971 to his retirement in 2002 at the age of 76. Swart was not only the senior survey boat skipper, but he was also the last veteran of World War II to retire from the Wilmington District. "The Swart, which replaced the aging Gillette, is state-of-the-art," said Wilmington District Commander Col. Steven Baker.
Big Wilmington Harbor Dredging Contract for GLDD
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (GLDD) gets Wilmington Harbor anchorage basin deepening contract from Army Corps of Engineers. The contract, worth US$16.4-million, is for the deepening of the anchorage basin portion of the existing navigation channel on the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. This project was awarded to by the Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District and involves the excavation of sand, gravel and rock seabed material. Work is expected to begin before the end of the year.
Conrad Industries New Contract Award
Conrad Industries, Inc. (OTC Pink Sheets: CNRD.PK) announced that it has been awarded a contract for the construction of a shallow draft dredge with a value of $13.1m. The United States Army Corps of Engineers awarded the contract to Conrad for the design and construction of a 156-ft self-propelled, shallow draft, split hull hopper dredge for the Wilmington District. The dredge will operate year round in coastal inlets from Florida to Maine. The vessel will be built at our shipyard in Morgan City, La. Johnny Conrad, President and CEO stated, “We have enjoyed a very good working relationship with the Corps which began in 1994. Since that time we’ve completed fourteen projects including towboats, fuel barges and crane barges.
You've Got Mail: 'Ferry Delayed'
It's never easy being a commuter across Puget Sound. Vessels break, weather intrudes and boats overload. But it just got a little bit easier. Washington State Ferries has introduced a new service to help commuters plan their trips, in spite of breakdowns or weather problems. The new service, email notification, sends electronic messages to customers signed up for a specific route or routes. The service is working for many ferry commuters. More than 900 have signed up, even though the new system is still in the testing mode. "As a commuter, I get as frustrated as anyone when there's a disruption in service, but things do happen," writes Bremerton commuter Edward Shanahan.
