Northrop Grumman Corporation
was awarded a contract for the planning and execution of dry-docking work on the nuclear-powered submarine USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709).
The contract is valued at $36.5 million. The work will be
performed at the company's Newport News sector in Newport News, Va.
"Newport News is pleased to have the opportunity to continue
our support of the submarine fleet," said Irwin F. Edenzon, sector vice
president for Technology Development and Fleet Support. "We want to be
in the sub maintenance business and each time we work on a major
maintenance availability we get better at it. Our objective is to
continuously improve our performance on these contracts and grow our
fleet-support business."
The Rickover arrived at Newport News on Oct. 1 for approximately five months of maintenance work. Work will include blasting and painting of the submarine's internal and external tanks,
removal and overhaul of various system valves, steering and diving gear
inspection and repair, repairs to torpedo systems, and inspection and
repairs to the sail, pressure and non-pressure hulls. This is the
second submarine availability awarded to the Newport News sector in the
last two years.
