Oldendorff Presses on With Its Newbuild Program
German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers says it has recently taken delivery of two new bulk carriers, continuing a string of newbuild deliveries from Chinese and Japanese shipyards.
The 63,000 tdw Ultramax Britta Oldendorff and 100,000 tdw Post-panamax Diane Oldendorff, both built by Japanese yard Oshima Shipbuilding and handed over during the second quarter of 2020, are among 23 bulk carrier delivered to Oldendorff since early 2019. The vessels were mostly ordered between 2015 and 2017 at "attractive prices", Oldendorff says.
These include a Japanese-built 100,000 tdw pair and 62,500 tdw trio at Oshima, as well as the Chinese-built nine 81,300 tdw vessels at Hantong, six 61,500 tdw vessels at NACKS + DACKS, one 38,000 tdw vessel at Beihai and two 36,000 tdw at Samjin.
Six of the Kamsarmaxes and two of the Newcastlemaxes were sold to third parties, mostly with long-term bareboat charter back.
The company says it has another nine vessels on order at Chinese yards due for delivery in 2020 and 2021, including four 209,000 tdw vessels and three 81,300 tdw vessels at Hantong, plus two 18,000 tdw vessels at Chengxi.
The two 18,000 tdw Transloaders (to be named Calypso and Anna) on order at Chengxi Shipyard are equipped with a gravity type selfunloading system and two Liebherr FTS CBG 360 deck cranes, each with an outreach of 36 + 10m. Due for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2020 and 2021, the two vessels will provide transshipment services in North Vietnam where they will self-load from Capesize vessels and self-unload coal to a power station throughout the duration of a 25-year transshipment contract.
From early 2019 to early 2021, Oldendorff will—in addition to its own ships—also have taken delivery of another 16 newbuilds ranging from from Post-panamax to Newcastlemax, which it had agreed to charter long term from other owners, mostly on a floating rate basis.
The company has also been active on the secondhand market, having snapped up one 209,000 tdw Newcastlemax and two 180,000 tdw Capes from Tata Power with attached long term contracts of affreightment.
The latest acquisition involves a 2010-built 93,000 tdw Post-panamax, which will join the Oldendorff fleet as Celine Oldendorff in early August in Hong Kong.
