November 8, 2002

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) has appointed Anthony Cooke and Richard Sayer as its new president and vice-president respectively. The appointments will run for two years. "As the worldwide shipping industry becomes increasingly competitive, the need for all companies and individuals to give their customers the best possible service is more and more important," says Anthony. "The Institute's qualifications provide the visible means for both companies and individuals to demonstrate their commitment to the highest standards of competence and service. The Institute enjoys an impressive global reach and, as its president, I shall endeavour to further strengthen its worldwide reputation." Cooke's shipping career began in 1978 when he was appointed managing director of Ellerman City Liners. He was responsible for the Ellerman Lines management buyout in 1985 and subsequent sale to Trafalgar House in 1987. From 1991 to 1999 he was chief executive of Andrew Weir & Co and president of the Chamber of Shipping from 1996-97. He is currently a director of The Baltic Exchange, James Fisher & Sons plc, Bidcorp plc and the West of England Shipowners Mutual Insurance Association. Anthony also takes a keen interest in education and was a member of the development board of the London Business School from 1997-99. Richard Sayer is one of the industry's leading maritime lawyers. He joined Ince & Co in 1962 where he was senior partner from 1995 to 2000. He is also chairman of the City of London Admiralty Solicitors Group, member of the Admiralty Court Committee and has recently been appointed chairman of London shipbrokers Galbraiths. "My successors are both persons of considerable stature and experience in the international shipping world. I am sure that the Institute will derive great benefit from their expertise and enthusiastic leadership," says James Freeland, immediate past president of the ICS.
