Executive Director James A. Fein will retire from Naval Surface Warfare Center's Carderock Division in Bethesda, Md., completing 34 years of service. The naval architect started in 1969 at what was then the David Taylor Research Center. His previous position was that of Director, Hydrodynamics Group, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) where he served as the senior technical advisor to the Navy for hydrodynamics issues related to ships, submarines and undersea weapons. Over the years, he worked for the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research and Advanced Technology, the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Carderock Division's parent command, NAVSEA. He was also a visiting professor at the Defense Systems Management College. Among many successful division projects, he highlighted the new National Maritime Technology Information Center, to be built at the Bethesda headquarters. He stated that the center would make the division a national and international center of excellence for maritime technology, as well as provide a hub for information sharing concerning the latest developments in ship systems and marine engineering. He also noted that recent establishment of the Center for Innovation in Ship Design in Bethesda exposes young researchers and engineers to the most advanced thinking in the Navy. The center is funded by the Office of Naval Research and belongs to the Naval Sea Systems Command.
