Cargotec Wins Macgregor Electric Cranes Order
In April Cargotec confirmed a new order for 21 MacGregor variable frequency drive (VFD) electric cranes to be installed on seven 28,000 dwt multipurpose cargo ships. The ships will be built at Huanghai Shipbuilding in China for Ethiopian Shipping lines, and the MacGregor cranes are scheduled for delivery between August 2012 and September 2013. Great Lakes Shipyard this month awarded Rapp Hydema NW the deck machinery packages for two U.S. Geological Survey research vessels now under construction. Rapp’s award includes a pair of trawl winches, a centerline winch, side-sampling winches port and starboard, and a dual net reel, for each vessel. In October 2010, the Offshore Support tug Smit Siyanda was delivered to her owners, SMIT Shipping Singapore Pte. Ltd. of Singapore. The vessel will be operated by SMIT Amandla Marine (Pty) Ltd. of South Africa. The Smit Siyanda was built by the Keppel Nantong Shipyard Co. Ltd. of China to a design by Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver, BC, based on the now well-proven platform of their RAmpage 5000 series offshore tug designs.
Crowley to Operate Eco-Friendly Barges in Western Alaska
Crowley announced its plans to construct two double-hulled, combination deck cargo and tank barges for service in Western Alaska. The vessels, named DBL 165-1 and DBL 165-2, are scheduled to be delivered in April and May of 2011, and will be home ported in Nome, Alaska. The double-hull barges will be used for shallow draft operations and beach landings for the delivery of fuel and cargo to the remote communities of Western Alaska.
