The 11th annual Norm Manly Puget Sound Maritime (PSM) / Youth Maritime Training Association (YMTA) Maritime Educational Scholarship competition was held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Compass Course Maritime Training. Bethany Shimasaki from Des Moines and attended Seattle Christian School, volunteers at Seattle Aquarium, and is planning to attend the University of California San Diego, majoring in marine science received a $2,000 scholarship sponsored by Ocean Peace, Inc.
BMT’s Simulation Tool Supports the Three Queens’ Visit to the Mersey
BMT ARGOSS, a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has assisted Liverpool Pilots in its planning for the visit of Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 to Liverpool in May 2015. Liverpool Pilots have used BMT’s ‘REMBRANDT’, real and fast time simulation and training tool to undertake detailed planning of how the three vessels will manoeuvre in close proximity in the River Mersey, at the narrowest point close to the Cunard Building downtown.
U.S. Navy Responds to Increased Arctic Activity
The loss of seasonal sea ice in the Arctic will have ramifications for the U.S. Navy in terms of future missions, force structure, training and investments. To get a better handle on planning for future Arctic missions, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert asked me to provide an unambiguous assessment of how ice coverage will change in the Arctic and how human activity in the Arctic will change in response to decreased ice coverage and other factors.
Gladding-Hearn Delivers First of Five NYPD Boats
With more than a dozen patrol boats and a fireboat built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation and operating in New York Harbor, the NYPD’s Harbor Unit turned again to the Mass.-based shipyard for five new patrol/rescue boats, three 61-footers and two 70-footers. The first high-speed vessel, outfitted for the harbor unit’s dive team, was delivered November 4. Measuring 61 feet on deck with a 17-foot beam and 3-foot draft, the boat was designed by C.
Panama Canal Registers Record Grain Cargo Transits
The Panama Canal is experiencing a strong grain shipping season with dry bulkers registering record grain cargoes during the first two months of the current fiscal year. Based on the analysis by the Panama Canal’s Marketing Division, in October, a total of 5.2 million long tons of grains were transported through the waterway, the highest level recorded since October 2011. In November, tonnage is likely to reach close to the record cargo tonnage of 6.3 million long tons of November 2011.
Videotel Security Training MCA Approved
Videotel has been granted MCA approval on a new training suite designed to meet the forthcoming STCW rules on Ship Security Training. From January 1, 2014, security training will fall into three categories, in that all seafarers must demonstrate an understanding of the security threats to their vessels whatever their role.
