The largest vessel registered in the UK Ship Register has arrived in Southampton today.
CMA CGM Kerguelen, a 398-meter-long containership operated by the CMA CGM Group, is big enough to pack five and a half A380 Airbuses on. It is capable of carrying 17,772 TEU (twenty feet equivalent units) and is driven by an engine of 9,000 horsepower.
Sir Alan Massey, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, with responsibility for the UK Ship Register, has been invited to visit the vessel while it is in Southampton. He will be joined by colleagues Gwen Lancaster, Customer Service Manager, and Annette Bowman, Customer Account Manager.
Welcoming Kerguelen onto the UK Ship Register, Massey said the ship is now the largest vessel afloat under the Red Ensign. CMA CGM has 40 vessels and well over three million Gross Tons on the UK Register, making it the register’s largest customer, Massey said. The register expects to add further CMA CGM new builds onto its Flag in the near future.
Delivered in March, CMA CGM Kerguelen was christened May 12 in Le Havre, France, and is the first of six vessels of the same size series that will enter the CMA CGM fleet in 2015
