Dortmund Port's Throughput Up

 

In 2014, Dortmund’s combined goods throughput on ships and trains amounted to 5.7 million tonnes, compared to 5.3 in the previous year. 2.9 million tonnes (+600,000) of this was ship related. The corresponding growth of 24% is the strongest since the start of the global economic crisis in 2008.

The positive trend was continued in the first quarter of 2015: +16% to 725,000 tonnes. Throughput was up for all types of goods. Containers led the field, followed by building materials, mineral oil, scrap, iron and steel and finally coal imports.

Containers
The biggest category of cargo is Containers, at 975,000 tonnes (14% up on 2014). This accounts for 32% of total throughput. Converted into 189,655 cargo units (+8.1%) Container Terminal Dortmund (CTD) has reached its capacity limit. Around the turn of the year 2015/2016, however, a new bimodal combi-terminal with a provisional capacity of 100,000 units will become available. The port expects further growth in rail transport, also with the ‘western ports’ (Rotterdam and Antwerp).
