Corey Ranslem, Chief Executive Officer of Secure Waters LLC, was invited to speak on the innovative approaches required to protect ships from the dangerous and growing trend of piracy in international waters.

The international conference, Trends in Passenger Transportation Security: How Prepared are We for More Attacks?, will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9 in San Francisco, Calif.

“Security companies worldwide are rushing to the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia, to put armed teams on cargo vessels. This approach is very costly, may put ships’ crews and special operations personnel unnecessarily at risk, and does not always mitigate attacks,” commented Corey D. Ranslem, chief executive officer of Secure Waters LLC, a North Miami Beach-based maritime security company.

The conference, sponsored by ASIS International, is being held to examine passenger security throughout various modes of transportation.  Pirate attacks on cargo vessels have increased 100% over last year.  The number of attacks against mega-yachts worldwide is also increasing at alarming rates.

The level of force used by pirates and robbers has escalated to a situation in which rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons are commonplace. Crew members are being held hostage—and in some instances killed. Ranslem was invited to address how ships should approach maritime security in an increasingly dangerous environment.

“Ships should invest in a proactive, risk-based approach that first and foremost accurately identifies the true threats and vulnerabilities mega-yachts, cargo and cruise ships face,” said Ranslem. “The best solutions come from customized strategic plans that combine the use of special operations personnel and technology, which only experienced and specialized security companies can provide.”

Secure Waters LLC provides a variety of security services including maritime security planning and consulting, threat/risk-based analysis, security training, security staffing, electronic security systems and special operations personnel. The company was founded in March 2005 and is based in North Miami Beach, Fla., with offices in Virginia and California.
