Minister for Defence Materiel and Science, the Hon Mal Brough MP, today opened the Australian Centre for Cyber Security Conference at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.

Minister Brough said that the Australian Government believes that strong cyber security is fundamental to innovation, growth and prosperity in a modern digital economy and vital to our national security.

“The Government is committed to working with Australian organisations and the community on tangible measures to improve cyber security practices and skills throughout the economy and foster innovation in the cyber domain to benefit Australian businesses,” Minister Brough said.

“Threats to cyber security are of particular concern to Defence, requiring research and development of new capabilities to protect the information domain.

“Australia’s critical infrastructure and government services, especially Defence, rely on information networks to operate effectively.

“Cyber will be a theme reflected in the new Defence White Paper and investment program, recognising its importance to our future security and prosperity.”

Minister Brough said the Government would soon consider the findings of the Cyber Security Review initiated by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

“A new public Cyber Security Strategy is being developed with practical initiatives to promote security and growth for Australia online,” Minister Brough said.

Organised by the Defence Science and Technology Group and the Australian Centre for Cyber Security, the conference focuses on ‘Redefining Research and Development Needs for Australian Cyber Security’ and will help ensure that multi-disciplinary research aligns with operational challenges facing Australia in the cyber domain.
