Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

May 28, 2010

IBC Global Academy has announced the availability of training bursaries for the international Diploma for Harbour Masters course.  This unique course addresses the theoretical knowledge required by the profession and is popular with both Harbour Masters and Port Captains wishing to update their professional knowledge as well as wider marine department personnel who work in support of a Harbour Master.  The course attracts students from around the world and is also popular with seagoing personnel looking to prepare for a move ashore into a port authority role or other maritime safety focus.

The bursary application deadline is 11th June 2010.

The course covers all activities for which a harbour master may find himself, or herself, responsible, including the safe management of navigation, the provision of pilotage and VTS services, management of the marine environment, port security, emergency planning and response, and the supervision of recreational navigation. It also provides supporting knowledge in the fields of personnel management, finance, strategic planning and public relations.

Led by Rear Admiral Bruce Richardson, former Chief Harbour Master of the Port of London Authority and past President of the International Harbour Masters’ Association, the course is supported by both the International Association for Harbour Masters’ (IHMA) and the UK Harbour Masters’ Association (UKHMA), as well as the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the International Association of Ports and Harbours and The Marine Society College of the Sea.

The course is delivered by distance learning over a 12 month period and goes beyond mere theory to provide considerable practical advice from serving Harbour Masters and subject tutors.  Being delivered by distance learning it allows busy people to develop their knowledge while they work, without having to take time off to travel or attend seminars. The course materials are accessible from anywhere in the world so a student can study at a time and location convenient to them. The online learning portal gives you access to tutors and facilitates networking with other course participants, so the student is supported.
